Rust on car

    Hi,

I have some rust on the wing of my car on the lower wing just over the wheel. I just put it through the NCT 3 weeks ago and it passed so they either didn't notice it bubbling or it was in a passable state.

I had this repaired by mechanic about a year and a half ago, but have noticed today that the paint is starting to bubble pretty badly again and some rust is visible, a small amount not that much.

How long can I leave this before needing to do it again? I am thinking I will get away with until the next NCT next year but I don't know.

Also will this constantly have to be done every once in a while, is there a more permanent fix?.

Whats the make of the car? usually you can repair it but cutting the area around it out and sticking in a new piece, it depends how far gone the rust is really

Ok, will get it done within the next month, Thanks.

Will this job only take a few hours for Mechanic to do?.

I know he has to strip it, then apply the filler and allow to dry and then paint and repaint.

so can it all be done in a few hours / a day?

You don't have to be :p do you know if the rust is above one of the rear wheels or one of the front wheels?

In that case I'd be getting a second hand rust frer wing in a breakers. Those wings are replaceable and can be got cheaply enough, so I wouldn't be too worried about the rust on your wing.

If your lucky enough you might be able to source a wing with the same colour as your car. That would save you the cost of repainting. Even if you can't get one in the same colour I'd still be getting one and getting it repainted.

The reason I say replace rather than repair is because it will be a much longer lasting job. It is highly likely that your rusty wing will be rusty again in a short space of time because it's impossible to irradicate every spec of rust. On a replacement rust free wing you won't have this issue.

Provided your car is the same model as the one below, you should have no trouble picking up a rust free wing as this model wasn't really prone to rust. :)

Thanks for advice but sounds like a whole load of hassle and costly, would prefer to just keep fixing it every year and then when I decide to sell it on it will then be the new owners problem. I will have it fixed up before again before sale of course and no need to mention it.

You should have no issue picking up a wing though. It would make more economical sense to replace once and be done with it rather than having to get it repaired every year or so. Your decision though of course :)

Yes I am going to get it repaired soon but I am not going to replace the wing as suggested by other poster, Thanks

The worst that will happen is the rust will spread on the wing. The rust on the wing won't effect other parts of the car.

Well I only plan to have the car for maybe 2 or 3 years more so I will repair it now at cost of about €50 I would think (I will supply garage with paint) and before I sell it so another €50 equals €100

A wing from breakers maybe €50 plus cost of painting it and fitting it another €100 I would reckon.

You won't get a wing painted for €50, not properly anyway.

It should be way cheaper to source a wing from a breakers and get it fitted.

The repair area is relatively small, around 7 inches long, 2-3 inches wide.

painting it the same colour is the most expensive part which u forgot, labour time and paint cost.

Buy a wing from a breakers in the same colour with a factory finish. Cheapest best way to fix (johnboys giving you good advice) :)

the whole wing will have to be sprayed though and blended in to the rest of the paintwork. Spraying just the effected area will leave the paint work mismatched and the repaired area very obvious and rough looking.

Ugh seriously. It will be far far far cheaper to do as John suggests and get a replacement from the breakers. This talk of paying only €50 once a year to treat it is out the window fairy talk. That's the nicest way of putting it. Listen to John, he's helping you save money.

How much are we talking so if we go this route and assuming I cannot source a wing the same colour from my local breakers, which is highly likely that they won't have the same colour car. I might take a pic tomorrow and send it to you if that's ok?

Thanks very much for your advice sir.

To spray a wing (properly) you're talking €200 upwards. To get someone to fix rust and spray a wing its going to be more. To get someone to fit a wing (if you find one in the correct colour) I'd say roughly €50.

Well it all depends on weather your able to source a wing in the same colour or if you will have to go down the repainting route. The former will cost a good bit less so id be going down that route first.

prices vary on the repainting route and is usually dependent on the quality of the job carried out. Im not a panel beater or painter myself so I can't give an exact figure but it would be up around the €200 mark for a good job afaik.

Your best bet would be to post a pic on here of the wing. That way other posters might be able to give some advice as well.

From your description of the wing I have no doubt that it can be repaired and any body shop will probably tell you the same but my point is for a little extra(circa €50 price of s/h wing) you could have a superior job.

Remember if they have to repair your old wing they will have to fill and sand the effected area and repaint the wing anyway so it won't be any more cost effective than fitting a s/h rust free wing.
