Still on it due to friends over in England. Would lose contact with them otherwise.

Face-Book? Isn't that the thing where colleges put up pictures of their students?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,734 ✭✭✭J_E

Nope. It's an absolute waste of time, and that's saying something, me being a frequent user of After Hours. Complete waste now.

Such an Irish thing to call anyone who doesn't do everything the same way to be a 'hipster'...stupid

Please don't give up on Facebook - Jeremy Kyle's guests won't have anything to quote from. They'll have more time to fit facial hardware and get tattooed, thereby causing a shortage of metal and ink which will really feque up my birthday present list.

P Eth: Whadya think of my tongue thtud. Got it for Chrithmath. Thoooo cool.

Yes I'm still on it though don't use it that often, I'm not in Ireland so It's handy to keep in touch with friends and family.

Closed my account about 2 years ago. Delighted with myself I was. Still am.

I was never on it. I've zero friends to begin with and the thoughts of purposely maintaining some sort of catalogue online of friends just reeks of stamp collecting to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,749 ✭✭✭irishmover

Said I'd never join years ago. Joined a month before I left for Australia in October 2011. Still use it to keep somewhat of a connection to Ireland and people I know.

Don't have too many people on it and block People Who Type Like This or talk pure ****e.

It's a handy way to stay in touch an an addition to Skype but i'd be deleting it if/when I return to Ireland to start a life here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,971 ✭✭✭Holsten

Nope. Just the same stuff over and over, friends with people I don't even like or care about, and the endless stream of photos of every waking moment of people's lives.

I don't use any social media anymore.

It was enjoyable at the start. All those people we'd lost touch with from our past and even some "networking" with some useful people from our working future.

But now it just seems to be a mixture of "click Like to save a baby/win a car/see yore friend's Ma in a bikini" (ok I made that last one up). I just realised that I havent posted anything on it in days nor have I bothered to even log in to check the newsfeed.

    Are you still on Facebook?

(cue thanks whoring second post of "I was never on it to begin with" - damn hipsters ;))

I deleted mine right after I left college. I felt I was spending too much time doing nothing on it and wasting my life away.

I miss the casual bitta stalking but I'm glad it's gone! I was sick of b*tches posting what they had for dinner and putting up selfies.

Boards.ie is not a social network. Its a, far cooler, good ol' fashioned internet forum

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,085 ✭✭✭SpaceTime

I saw the permissions it was requesting on my Android phone and decided I'm not prepared to use their mobile app anymore.

The list it absolutely ridiculous !

I'm actually getting a bit sick of Android apps and their crazy levels of access. It's putting me right off the whole platform.

    Twitter is pointless bollocks.

Yeah, I find that infuriating too. New update permissions...'wants to access your contacts list, make calls, switch it on and off, turn the camera on, microphone, etc etc' for apps that rarely need it. Makes you worry.

Absolutely not. Most people just don't 'get' Twitter because they join and expect celebrities to start chatting to them. It's like any social network, you need a few people you know to really get started on it.

I might join up just so I can cyberstalk John Waters' beard.

Hahaha... can an internet forum be classed as social media? I mean I don't think I ever even heard the words when I joined up here.

I miss the days when people would sign into MSN Messenger :(

I use facebook only for the chat function and don't think I've even posted a single status since joining.

I'm much too introverted to ever want more than a handful of people to know what I'm doing when I'm doing it and who with, and I kind of dislike the effect sites like FB have had on how this is viewed.

To be honest, I think it's kind of crap that you can't go anywhere or do anything in a social setting nowadays without expecting to be tagged in statuses and photos, and that objecting to this turns you into some sort of social pariah.

Have it but never post on it. Just use it for the chat and then only because there are people who don't have any other IM service.

Though even at that I only actually take to a handful of people on it so I certainly wouldn't miss it if it shut down in the morning.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,296 ✭✭✭✭gimmick

I disabled my account for a while last year and didn't miss it. That said I have reopened it and pretty much only use it for info of whats happening in town pub/club wise.

I do not use it as a way to keep in touch with anyone, and have so many people "hidden from newsfeed" its ridiculous. They all made the mistake of "like if you hate cancer" style shares.

Yeah, I'd never make such a connection.

Social media - forming social contacts.

    Internet forum - discussing topics.

You do get socializing on here and discussions on Facebook, but they're not their primary functions.

Well that's how I see it anyway. I remember when boards first introduced social groups and posting on people's profiles a few years back, was quite concerned it was turning into FaceBoards (!?) - really glad that kind of thing didn't take off.

Yes MSN was great before they started trying to turn it into FB lite and then shut it down completely and pushed everyone to Skype.

I use Pidgin myself.. can connect to the Google/FB messenger services without having to deal with the social media shyte

Still on it although I have a real love/hate relationship with it. I have people I am not particularly close to on limited view so they can't actually see my profile at all (people I mightn't want to go the whole hog and defriend for fear of offending them :o).

I don't put anything personal on there. Don't post any photos and tend to share funny articles or jokes but it's all pretty impersonal. I actually asked our wedding guests not to post any of our pictures on Facebook and they were cool with that, anyone I wanted there on the day was there, I don't really see the point in sharing every private and important moment with everyone under the sun. I'm quite private anyway so it has it's uses - good for Chat with friends and keeping in vague touch with people but that's about it.

I can see how one would consider boards.ie a form of Social media.
websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking
forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos)

On the subject of that, I bloody hate Facebook's chat function and having windows appearing in a browser

There was something much nicer about having a dedicated chat program. Did you ever use ICQ? That was one brilliant tool. Ended up being ruined with bloatware though :(

I used to think this too but it's excellent as a news feed if you 'follow' the right accounts
ars technica is excellent for example

I think it's rubbish for peer to peer communication cause I can never say anything in less than 164 characters
