Personally, I really like Subway. But I see them as a fast food chain, competing with the likes of McDonalds and Burger King but for lunch rather than dinner.

I can't really see them driving cafés out of business. It's a totally different market if you ask me.

Yes, to be fair. It's not somewhere you go to sit down and have a chat and a break, not somewhere you'd meet your Mam, say. Still, I wouldn't like to see one in every town in Ireland driving out established businesses who have fought long for their corner.

Are they a franchise? Presume they are.

Its got nothing to do with the fact that I hate Subway's food.

But I'd rather eat in my own locally run Deli Café with its freshly prepared food than some homogeneous branch of a large multinational where hot food is the result of a staff member putting the fillings of a sandwich into a microwave and pushing a button.

Luckily there's no mention in the article about citizens being forced to eat there at gun point.

One of these would do well in Maynooth, imo of course.

    Yeah, they are.

The one across to me closed down a year or two ago. And the one around the corner from me at work closed before that. They pop up and shut down all the time. They seem to do a lot of joint leasing - the one on Grafton Street is above a newsagent - which makes them more discreet than McDonalds or Burger King.

I don't think anyone likes seeing homogenisation on the high street but the fact is places like this provide a consistent, known service, which is why they can do business all around. The are cafés like KC Peaches who have a few outlets but I've no idea how good or not they are.

You can't really advocate a market where you're stopping business setting up to protect existing business.

I'd go to a sandwich place like Subway and to a nice cafe. I wouldn't make a permanent choice of either.

Plus I'm presuming that subway are like McDonald's and the like: franchises so they're separate businesses not a single big one.

Hard to beat the Chestnut or Kingfisher.

Breakfast roll from Mace on the Castletown Road :P

I know someone who did the subway diet..... I couldn't eat subway more than 2 days in a row gets very repetitive after 2 subs. But they do make good cookies

Quizno's once or twice a year is pretty much all I could stomach. Subway bread is just awful.

I used to go to Subway every now and again until a friend told me about their "reformed" meat

KC Peaches is AMAZING. I could eat there every day for the rest of my life and be happy!

No, of course not. All I'm saying is that I, personally, like to see a lot of diversification in any marketplace. But these things find their level, hopefully there will continue to be lots of space for both homogenous offerings, and something a little more unique.

Healthy fillings {except that 'meat ball lucky mix'}, but too much of that salted gluten/wheat (wonder if it's gm'd?) - can't be good for you, a 1' long sub will leave you a bit stuffed for 20mins.

Read somewhere that <10% of the population is allergic to the modern/modified strains of high yield wheat in one way or another. As soon as they introduce gluten reduced or ancient spelt grain options (I'm not even allergic) and a touchscreen {pickles not jallapenoesyokes!} to speed up the order even more, I'll pop back in...

Avoid those large cookies: likely to be around the same calorie count as a 6 mile run whilst doing starjumps. Maybe check too that the cheese slices do contain actual cheese.

Still beats the plasticated likes of kfc/mcd/bking by a long long way.

But it won't create 1,800 jobs. They'll probably cause a net loss in jobs.

Not a massive fan of the food but its far from the worst. Jobs and investment is always a good thing. The only fast food franchise I'd love to see opening here is Au Bon Pain.

I'll second that. Wish I still lived in the city.

    Quiznos never really took off.

    What/Where is Quiznos?

I despise Subway mainly from eating it once or twice abroad. Pure muck.

In Dublin City Centre, there is a Starbucks every other street and Westmoreland Street has 2! 100m up from that, there's another one. Subway will only be following that trend.

So we're agreed then, freedom of choice for people is a good thing then? Great! People can decide for themselves, and if there's such a groundswell of hatred for the food (as referenced in every second post in the thread) then local cafes have nothing to fear!

Two subways have closed here recently enough. They were both replaced by Fish & Chip shops (same franchise owner as before) and you can now hear the anti-Subway heads yelping on about how great a real fresh fish (lol) place is. Everyone's a winner.

I can never understand how Subway are so popular. The food is horrible, its bread doesn't taste like bread at all. The couple of times I tried them left me feeling sick afterwards. Certainly won't be going there again. Would rather give my business to an indigenous unique cafe than this faceless corporation with food that tastes of cardboard.

My local subway never had meatballs when I went there. I don't bother now.

Do I want crap food quickly that will fill me up and feel like shit at lunch time?

Do I want an Irish celebrity to help me pretend the crap I am eating is healthy?

    If so: Subway!

Alternatively, if I don't care about the irish celebrity and I want to get my shit food AND get petrol in one stop: Petrol station deli.

Or, for no where near the price and about 5 times more healthy, a wrap/panini/sandwich/salad/pitta from home with any and all trimmings of your choice. :)

Pret is by far the best of the Costa, Starbucks, eat etc bunch. I'd love to see them open up in Dublin.

Yeah, they're handy when you want something fast and more wholesome. Do love their smoked salmon sandwiches.

Once had their plum duck wrap in London, I nearly died it was so tasty! I also like their ethics regarding waste at the end of the day. All unsold sandwiches are brought to shelters. You don't mind paying extra for that, well me anyway.

Subway is the best of the fast food chains... people can't really expect this to not happen... especially when crap like O'Brien's is so dreadful and so over priced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,284 ✭✭✭✭freshpopcorn

I used like subway when I was younger. As I got older tough I sort of went off it because I found the quality bad( meats especially)
I would go to subway if I had to choose between subway or dried out chicken/wedges.
One thing I would say tough is there is a big difference between a deli/delicatessen and a hot food counter in spar/centra for getting your lunch.

Subway is the best and O Brien's is dreadful? Oh boy...

O'Brien's is a joke. Some of the worst crap I ever came across.

Subway is the best of the int'l fast food chains. It crushes crap like Mcdonalds and Burger King.

I don't eat the deli meat in Subway, but the veg is fresh and you can at least see what's going into your food.

They also don't have the balls to try and impress me with "hand cut" sandwiches.

    Not hand made. Hand cut.

    Pathetic.

One subway roll has the same amount of salt as 27 bags of salt and vinegar crisps. Pure ****e but once in a blue moon is alright.
