Lads, how's this for a 1080p IPS monitor?

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-23EA63V-23-inch-1920-Monitor/dp/B00BJHBUW0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1389995448&sr=8-1&keywords=ips

May have to buy a new monitor faster than expected due to my current one starting to feck about. Can't get a 1440p in there a long with the 280x/290! Can spare around 200 with work and Birthday cash though.

Bought this before Xmas off Littlewoods for 150 euro. Loving it so far might even pick up another one after I get my 290 card.

Intel to reduce global workforce by five percent in 2014

Nothing to indicate it will affect Irish workers.

    More random problems..

I use an external hard drive, namely a 2.5" Toshiba StorE 750GB HDD, to watch series / movies in my girlfriends house. This used to work fine until the last couple of days but now the TV keeps telling me that no usb is connected to the TV, and the drive itself makes a strange 'clicking' noise. When I heard the clicking the first time I assumed the drive was busted, as we had just been out for a walk before plugging it in and the drive the was in my jacket pocket. So, next day I brought the drive home, plugged it into my computer, and it worked perfectly. Tried plugging it into my own TV at home, and again it worked perfect. No strange clicking either.

Brought it over to my girlfriends house. Repetitive clicking. No USB detected.

    Any suggestions?

I have the Terra-byte and 500 GB version of this drive. Over all I think they are good drives. I don't plug them directly into the TV, but I believe your problem is power related, as my drives are very particular about what USB port they are plugged into. My case has the USB ports on the front. They are doubled up USB 2 ports, so I get four ports connected to two USB headers on the motherboard. If I plug my drives into the same bank of USB ports I get clicking, and the computer will fail to recognise them. However, if I plug them in, one into each USB deck, they will work. For some reason the bottom port on the USB decks are the only ports I get good transfer speeds. Also, if I charge my phone on my PC over USB whilst one drive is plugged in it can cause the drive to click and not respond. I guess USB 2 was never designed to power portable hard drives. If any of this makes sense, I would advise you to experiment with all the available USB ports on your TV, and try plugging out unnecessary hardware.

It worked all along which is the confusing part.. Maybe once I fill it past a certain limit it requires more power? That's the only thing that changed.. I added about 100GB of material to it..

Just as you mentioned the USB 2.0 thing, I thought I'd try plugging it into one of my USB 2.0 ports on my PC. Same problem, clicking. Seems you're right about it being a power issue. At least I can test it now!

Okay it doesn't work at all on my USB 2.0 port of my computer, even when empty.. :pac:

There goes my theory about the more you add the more power it requires :p

That is kinda strange. I would have expected it to work at least, even if data speeds aren't great. Do you have a lot of USB stuff hooked up? What kind of power supply do you have?

I guess that you have USB 3 ports on your PC, and the motherboard gives more power to USB 3 intentionally.

Have another external, hooked up via USB 3.0, as well as a keyboard and mouse.. One or two other USB connections also.

My TV is USB 3.0 and the drive works fine. Hers is 2.0.

    My power supply is overkill.

Edit: I'm going to reformat the drive, see if that helps..

I was thinking about this, and maybe if you bought a cheap powered USB hub you could connect it to your TV, plug in the drive and off you go.

I'd really rather not buy anything else! :p Only reason we're using the drive at all is because this show isn't available for streaming anywhere online (Legally) for God knows what reason.

Netflix seems to have every other show we want.

Fair enough, we all have too many cables these days.

I'm also starting to think that beginning the reformating process at 1.30 wasn't the best idea. 3% down and I'd like to go to bed soon! :p

I always quick format and never had an issue.

Quick format didn't have a FAT32 option, which is the only file system that works with TV's it seems.

Some info about the anti-glare coating etc if you're interested.

Seems to be running fine on 2-way SLI for me. Maybe there's some settings in CCC you need to change?

I have this model and am very happy with it. Not that I know a lot about displays but it's sitting beside my older 22" LG non IPS panel in a dual monitor setup and the display is much crisper & brighter.

That's the one I got. Slight light leakage from the bottom left corner but forgiveable for a really nice image.

So I set up UPC Horizon at home there a few days ago. What I did not know is that I will no longer have a router but instead everything comes through the one box (TV, Internet, Home Phone, everything). My computer does not have a wifi card in it as I didn't think I'd ever need one. My wifi speeds at the moment are a joke so I need help.

As my computer does not have wifi, what I have done is..
Computer connected via ethernet to wifi extender, which is connected to the Horizon box wirelessly in the next room.

We're supposed to be getting 120Mb connection (We had 60) with this as well, but my download speeds have dropped significantly. I'm downloading a torrent at the moment which is maxing out at 2MB/s when I should be getting closer to 15 MB/s. Before swapping to Horizon I was getting ~7 MB/s which is about right.

Any suggestions of what I can do?

Moved my wifi extender slightly closer to the Horizon box, suddenly getting almost 50Mbps (My original package speed before upgrading to 120Mb).

Maybe we never actually got upgraded?

I'll ring 'em tomorrow anyway. Would like a new router regardless. Sick of being on Wifi.

I have Crossfire selected under the Games and Performance tab in CCC and it works with 90% of the games ive come across, with the 2 exceptions being Skyrim and Saints Row:The Third. Second card just sits there idling at about 32C.

Had a quick look in CCC this morning for anything i may have missed and the only thing i can see that may help is that you can add custom 3D application settings profiles but.....i probably shouldnt have to do anything like that.

Ill have to do a bit of digging into the AMD drivers and see if i can find any more info, the multi gpu support for skyrim was supposedly brought in with CCC 11.11 or 11.11b updates, think rolling back to them would be a bit to far back though

I'm baffled, and I hope someone can help. I'm fairly tech my not great but built my PC and can generally fix most silly pc issues! I know this is PC building, but I'm active on here, so I'll put this here amongst the brain trust!

My girlfriends laptop craps out when streaming. YouTube, netflix, BBC, you name it! Just goes as slow as all hell and craps out. I've pinged YouTube with CMD and no issues, she has bitdefender on there, and has no issues with viruses, malware etc. I've cleared caches, temp files, updated drivers etc, but nothing! Silverlight and Java, same problem. laptop is on Win 7 Home premium and is only 3 years old. Ideas anyone?

Task manager, and see what's using what. I'd guess it's CPU usage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,100 ✭✭✭brianblaze

That's the thing, the only thing using the CPU by any large amount is the browser when it's on! That's why I thought it was malware, but tis clean! *And the same on all browsers!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

Can you stick up a screenshot of Task Manager, and HWMonitor (or similar) while this is going on?

    Try reinstalling flash I guess?

    Tried that....

I presume it's over wifi network. Have you tried directly connecting to the switch port on the router with an Ethernet cable and test the streaming.
