Yeah very decent crowd, conditions far from ideal.Ball not hopping in many areas, quite cold.Thought the backs stood out,Kevin Keane and Eoghan Reilly impressed.Still believe Keane is'nt mobile enough.
Delighted at the amount of new lads tried,Diarmuid o Connor is the image of his brother stylistically.Tom King and Michael Sweeney have the requisite skills, question marks remain re their physiques.
Not a fan of Robert Hennelly taking the 45s,leave it to Cillian.Although he is a handy backup.
NUIG had some very decent players, physically strong.Their full forward really stood out,I believe he's Shane Moran from Leitrim?

Keane looks to have bulked up something massive just judging from the pre-match photo. Prob spending a lot of time in gym, will get fitter/faster with more game time.

King is awful light alright, but if he can kick a point or two off the bench he's wort looking at.

We'll see wholesale changes for Sunday I assume.

I'm fascinated to see what team lines out in first league match

Off top of my head (assuming no injuries, and Castlebar lads) I'd like

    Hennelly
    Keane Cafferkey Barrett
    Rodgers Vaughan Harrison
    AOS SOS
    Gallagher* Higgins CFreeman
    D Coen AFreeman Doc/Conroy

*I assume he'll play under 21's in early rounds anyway

shane moran was a good player.

the ball didnt hop at all , i thought the grass was too long to be honest.

it was freezing. i thought 10 euro in was a tad steep and only 4 gates open when i got up there at 6.45.

cant see any of new faces making the championship team on tonight performance.

It's very early in year in fairness. I'm sure a few will get chance put their hand up in league

But look you're probably right in fairness

Like the 6 backs from last year are more or less untouchable if they stay fit. Barry will challenge for midf and it'll be interesting to see what James does here- though I suspect it'll be a toss up between SOS and Barry when Aidan was the worse of him and his bro last year. Barry is a serious athlete and can kick a score- something the other two aren't as good at

Forwards there's def room for a new face or two I think, though you'll have Higgins, COC and McL nailed on really and Andy Moran as good as.

I think there's room for a new 12. While Freeman is leading man for number 14, he has lost form a bit over the years and it'll be interesting if someone like Coen or Regan can push really hard for a spot. Doherty and Conroy will likely be used as impact subs

If I had to say now I'd have Adam Gallagher as my wild card of sorts to force his way into team

Ok, great turn out. Poor that they couldnt open up another stile quickly to let people in. Lovely evening

Hard to gauge anything off that. Delighted with Gallagher, looks the part, cool and calm and well built.
O'Connor looks good also. Keane was great.

Hennelly while it doesnt matter did the same again with the high ball in, held up his hands about it, so learn and know for again. Took nice 45's, 2 out of 4.
Coen played v well, thought Sweeney and King overplayed the ball, but again 1st runs out, so they are going to take time to bed in, both v quick and eager.

thought Moran from Leitrim had a great game for them. Big lad.

    Black card! :D

Peronally think we should be trying to develop outfield free takers both left and right footed for short and long kicks.

    Agreed on all points.

A few new faces last night which is nice to see. Tom king looks a bit light but got on a lot of ball and will improve for the game. Keane.Drake and coen played well i thought aswell. Serious amount of people outside when the game started.Could they not have delayed the game by 15 to 20 mins ?

    U-21s well beaten by Cavan.
Cavan looked a good team, some very big lads well able to play.

Whats the story with the forwards on the U21 panel?

No Conor Loftus, Cian Hanley, Darragh Doherty, Tommy Conroy, Liam Irwin from last years Minor champions.
And no James Quinn, Darren Duffy, Shane Hennelly, Eoghan Lavin from the Minor semi-finalists from 2012.
All were prominent players in them Minor runs. A bit of a shock that none of them lads are on this panel can anyone explain it? Have some of them been deemed not good enough?

Yes I'm surprised at this too. Our Under 21 All Ireland winners in 06 had a lot of the previous years minors involved - and they weren't minor champions in 05. Our minors over the previous couple of years before last year were weak enough so I would like to see more of last years team getting a run this year for the 21s. Otherwise I don't think we'll do much at under 21 level this year.

Maybe they will be brought in eventually, in fairness they had a very long season and might get an extra break?

I think the idea is essentially to use the Hastings cup to have a look at an extended panel of about 50-70 players and then whittle it down. I know Conor Loftus is on a training programme given by the senior team at the moment so maybe he has been told to concentrate on that for 6-8 weeks and then be brought back in for tests.

Adam Gallagher was the stand out scorer on the 2012 minor team and maybe some of the 2013 minor forwards are held back/bulked up for 2015 U21 team?

i heard lavin duffy and Quinn are out with injuries at the moment so that would explain their absense

Thought it was an injury. He wasn't playing for the Stephenites either. Was outstanding for the u21 team last week against Longford as well.

Anyone listenin to rte there? Did (another) post mortem on mayo. Enda mcnulty tommy carr and banty. Mcnulty amid the pschobabble said one thing that ive long argued that mayo need to confront the reasons for their losses head on. Carr more or less said its a mental thing which id also agree with. Personally ive found a general denial among mayo players and supporters about the choking in aifs. Imho theyd be bettet to admit theres a problem and set about trying to address the promlem rather than the usual "ah shur we woulda won if it wasnt for the goals" kind of guff. My 2 cents

That was one terrible 2nd half performance against Sligo IT. Conditions were shocking for both but Sligo deserved to win that only for the late penalty. Big improvement needed against Rossies

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,569 ✭✭✭✭ProudDUB

Yep. I heard it too. I had to agree with what was said. They have to address what happened on the pitch and on the sidelines and do so in depth, no matter how painful or difficult it might be, for all of them, players and management alike. Then set about addressing what they did wrong and put systems in place to correct it. They won't win an All Ireland until they do.

A lot of people go on about how Mayo lack a marquee forward. That is true, they do. But that is not something that they can control really. The likes of a Bernard Brogan or Micheal Murphy or Colm Cooper aren't exactly falling off trees. You can't just rustle them up out of thin air. But there are still plenty of things that they CAN control (such as how long CO'C takes over his frees) and when they have identified what they are, and how they can control them, they will greatly increasing their chances of taking Sam for a spin west of the Shannon.

He was dropped from the panel for financial reasons (the Mayo county board forced Horan to choose players to drop) right before the Connacht final in July after something like eight months training. Terrible stunt to pull to be honest. Not on the Mayo senior panel this year, it'd have been an experience that'd sour anyone on county football.

I'm sure Horan would like him to reconsider given the form he's in.
