Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness that exercises regularly should be ok, the gardai isn't for couch potatoes after all.

Toughest will be the sit ups and press ups. Anyone who hasn't done a sit up or press up in over a year, then good luck doing 35 of them!
I go to the gym everyday, it took me a while to get from 10 press ups to doing 50! Get training now is my advice!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 63 ✭✭AaronMul1

Yeah im gonna start tomorrow with the sit ups. Im fairly good with press ups, 25 with no limit shouldnt be a problem but il be doing plenty regardless

Also if you don't do any aerobic exercise it would be advisable to start and download the bleeps test. It's not that fast but it's all about endurance.

Thanks for your reply, I have watched videos like this before and googled info and its keeps saying about the levels. I just can't understand if you have to run at different speeds for the different levels or how it works. Is it just every length you run it goes up in level points?

With all respect lads and ladies,

Trying to get fit etc shouldn't be a priority at this stage,

The aptitude is the most important part for now,

Get practicing these if you want to give yourself the best chance!!

    Fitness came come later,

    My two cents :)

True story!! But sure you can kill two birds with one stone and read your aptitude test book on the treadmill!

Each level the time between the beeps gets shorter so you have to run quicker but it's very gradual you wouldn't even notice it, you have to be on the line by the time the beep sounds or else you miss the beep and your out. So it goes from a slow slow jog to about 3/4 pace and there is a slight break between the full levels( 2.0. 3.0 ect)

Well, it's always good to get in shape, regardless of the campaign.

Thats all well and good and I see where you are coming from, aptitude is priority now of course. But fitness isn't something you are going to do over 4 weeks between the interview and medical/pct. there is around 4 months from now to May when I presume stage 5 will be starting. If ones fitness and or weight is something that needs improving on it is from now on that he/she would want to be getting serious about it too. There is no point saying sure I might not get that far and the pass the interview and then get a date for a month later for stage 5, then 'oh s**t' iv to loose a stone ect. My two cent would be start getting fit now and give yourself a chance in case you do get that far!

Thanks very much that's the help I was looking for not some smart arse answer like what some people give here.
It sounds tricky if you not on the line on the right second you fail?

I can be tricky. Well if you are going over it on the beep you will be fine. Ideally you would want to be heading the other way on the beep and not be cutting it too fine. One thing I find hard is that you are more or less stopping and starting running all the time. You are only just running when you have to stop all the momentum and turn and run again ect. It is draining that way. I'd find a constant run easier. Near the end it's all about constant bursts and turning efficiently. You should download it with you tube converter ect and do it that's the only way to get used to it.

So its ok to hit the line before the beep.
    Thanks for explaining it.

If you have an iPhone, 4 cones, measuring tape and a green longer than 20 metres, download this > https://itunes.apple.com/ie/app/bleep-test-free/id428100189?mt=8 < app, it will help you prepare for it

Thanks, I might not even get that far in the campaign if at least I will get fit. Lol

Yeah it helps to be reasonably fit, we used to do bleep tests in School all the time, I wasn't too bad at them, I just got the app, gonna give it a try. I started jogging in November and some weights and exercises, gonna start my pull / push ups next week. If I don't get that far i'm aiming to lose 5 kilos anyways. Don't think ill get that far, i'm great at abstract reasoning but not too great at verbal, any practise tests im doing im only averaging 60%
