They call to my place of work once a month with a magazine, I gladly file it away in the appropriate place :D

I know people find them annoying, but I appreciate it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not religious or anything but look at it from their perspective....

Most religions believe HORRIBLE things will happen to you for ETERNITY if you don't follow their practices.

Nobody enjoys going door to door in the cold, talking to strangers, and the mormons/Jehovah's witnesses know you don't like them showing up. It's a really hard, really thankless job. They don't *want* to do it.

But they do it anyway. Because they believe you are going to suffer for all eternity if someone doesn't help you. They don't know you, but they want to help you.

    I can respect that.

What drives me mad is religious people who fully believe I'll go to hell or be denied eternal bliss in Heaven - but don't want to offend me by telling me about it. They 'respect me' too much to try and save my eternal soul?!?! I just don't see how someone can say they are....Christian (as an example, but it applies to just about everything) and then, in the next breath, say that it's totally cool that their friends/neighbour's/family choose not to believe. They 'respect' their beliefs or lack of belief.

That'd be like if I stood by and watched my brother drink bleach because he thought it was water....and I'm just sitting there 'respecting his belief' knowing full well he was going to suffer and probably die. I'd NEVER do that, because I'm not a total arse....I'd stop him. I'd yell, 'No!' - I would do everything in my power to stop him from drinking bleach.

Maybe a lot of religious people don't 'really' believe? Maybe they aren't sure I'll fail to make the cut into heaven....or maybe they just don't care. I don't know. But I do know, every six months or so, some religious people will knock on my door and TRY to save my soul. I appreciate it. I mean, I still don't believe them, but THEY believe it, and they are trying to save me. That's a million times better than the 'progressive' religious types who would rather see me burn in hell than possibly offend me by teaching me about Christ or whoever.

As I understand it the JW believe that there is a very limited number of spaces available in heaven, such that believing isn't enough to qualify, you actually have to make a certain grade in order to get in. One of the ways to improve your grade is to convert other people to the religion.

Not as familiar with Mormonsim, but I think there is something about them getting their own planet if they prove themselves.

it's a cult. I have absolutely no respect for these groups. Groups that financially strip you and isolate you from your family.

I actually always bring them and have a chat. They're normally dead sound people. Geniunely good people, if a bit naïve.

One time I brought two of them in to my mams house. I actually got on so well with one of them, that he took my number. He was goooorgeous so I was delighted! I can tell you not all mormons take the no sex before marriage as seriously as you'd think ;)

Best looking girls I knew growing up were JW's. Two sisters and they were insanely hot. Especially the elder sister.

Then I met some of their friends.

It's like their religion has some sort of hit girl breeding programme.

    .

Where did you hear that? It's completely incorrect.

JWs believe that god is going to come along, wipe all the 'bad' people out at 'armageddon' and then the 'good' people (ie - JWs and non JWs who are good people) will live forever on a paradise earth. Only 144,000 will be going to heaven. (can't remember the scripture they base this on, but most alive today do not believe they are going to heaven)

They call on doors as they are biblically told to do so.

And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Basically they go door to door to spread the good news so that they can help save as many folks so that they won't perish in Armageddon.

You can look at it cynically from an organization point of view (I know I do) and think that they're trying to gain more members (which equals more money, contributions, power over people) but when it comes down to each JWs themselves, they're just brainwashed and think they're doing the right thing.

Totally agree with you. The really funny thing that a lot of Catholics, Protestants and other Christian denominations don't get though is that jehovahs witnesses use the exact same bible except call it the new world translation and everywhere it mentions god they say 'Jehovah' - so really shouldn't all Christians believe the same in regard to Armageddon, paradise on earth, the 144,000 in heaven and preaching gods word door to door? Why do most Christians ignore all these parts?

Catholics are actually the Jehovah's Witnesses of the developing world. Rather than going door to door, they go from developing country to developing country. It's the same thing really.

The only difference is scale, really.

One part of my family are witnesses. They tried convert all of us. When I ( dyed in the wool atheist) refused, they started to pull away, calling me a bad association.
Their beliefs and practices are pretty mad. They believe than anyone that isn't a jaw will be destroyed, while they go off and play with lions in a paradise. No sex before marriage, so most get married in their late teens or early 20s.
In fairness, some of the ones I've worked with over the years were sound, including one guy who excommunicated ( and happy enough about it)

Just to point out, I'm not saying I agree - just clarifying what they believe as I know a lot of them.

Technically not really genocide as 'he' wouldn't be wiping out any specific ethnic, racial, religious, or national group - everyone is fair game.

'mass murder' is probably a better term.

Edit - by saying 'JWs' will be saved I was actually a tad incorrect - they believe 'bad' JWs will perish too. All comes down to whether you're a 'good' person or not - ie; 'god knows what's in your heart'

Just again to reiterate, I do not believe any of this (I do understand how ludicrous what I'm writing sounds)

Have some interesting conversations with Christians in Belfast. About two months ago a pair of Christians were at my door and were trying to convince me about God's plan and all that nonsense. I spouted off some stuff about science and evolution, when:

Christian: "But evolution is a theory".

Me: "Aye, and so is gravity but I don't see you jumping off a building."

    Conversation petered out after that.

Edit: Seachmall's response on the first page was the best I've ever come across though!

When Jehovah's called to my door, I introduced them to my beautiful 10 yr old daughter who we would not have with us were it not for the generosity of all you blood donors out there...think they knew there was nothing else to say, they left and have not returned...

I once brought two into my house are gave them a cup of tea as I felt sorry for them. The where two young guys from the good ol' usa wearing only the standard white shirts and slacks on a rainy day.
What rellay put the cherry on the top was that they where knocking on doors in a student estate and I doubted they will be inside again before 6.
