Getting better at running slower these days (or am I just getting slower?)

Naw, it's a very special skill running slower. Very few can master it effectively. Congratulations ;)
You find you're enjoying the slower runs or are they a drag?

I don't find them a drag actually. I am enjoying them to be honest insofar as I'm getting the miles in and I feel like they are taking less out of me. If that is the recipe for keeping me running consistently and gets me my goal in London then I'm happy to work with it. I'm putting my faith in the training paces I've been given.:)

Ah feck...yes I did get a chance to read. Was coming on now to respond.

I follow you re the session thing.Note to self for future. Regarding the group LSR. That option has crossed my mind before, it's just that the club is so much handier geographically and at the moment is my only interaction with club activities but when the next long ones come up I'll definitely consider it.

    Good stuff!!
Maybe ask one of the clubmates if they don't mind running 9:30/mile. Probably there are loads at your level (and I am sure slower) that are banging out the long runs too fast, but just doing it to keep up. They might be relieved if there is a slower option??

Either way, super training; keep it up!!

    "*Sunday 5th Jan*

Long Run today. Set out at 8am from club. All the groups as they settled after a mile or so were going faster than I wanted to be. They were mostly not going as far as me so I had to settle into my own little group of one:(. That's a bit frustrating that there is nobody else at my pace but sure what can you do? The focus for me is London, so let them at it I said to myself in my head.

Target today was 16mi at 9:30-10:00 pace

    Ended up with 16.93@9:27

Felt absolutely great after this run and could have done more if I needed to. Conditions were ok up to about 10 miles in when the wind and rain got up which left a difficult 2 mile section from 11-13ish. Took a gel at 10 and think that helped to keep me strong to the end. Was a bit of an obstacle course up around Clontarf this morning with all the sandbags and flood protection in place.Hope it doesnt get as bad as they seem to be expecting.

This rounds off a really good week's work for me so will give the body a well deserved rest from running tomorrow.:) 2hrs 40mins on my feet today

    Splits today were:9:36,8:59,9:22,9:25,9:38,9:26,9:23,9:25,9:31,9:36,9:36,9:38,9:40,9:30,9:43,9:24,(8:45)

    Monday 6th Jan

Planned rest day from running but did my class - 90mins Core work

    Tuesday 7th Jan

As I'm travelling tomorrow, decided to get session in early this week. Plan was 10x 400m w/6o sec rest between reps @ slightly better than 5k pace. Since I haven't done a 5k since May 2013 , i really hadnt a clue what I should be doing this at. I did a 3 mile race recently and did that in 21.54 but I wasn't eyeballs out for that one as I was only recently back running after injury. So calculated guessed a target pace of 6:40-6:50 for this.

Rang from city centre down to Ringsend park for this one as there is a nice path loop there that suited my purposes. There were a few other runners there that seemed to be doing intervals also. It was a fine day for it and felt a bit overdressed in my running jacket, a bit windy in spots though.

I find it difficult to judge these things but I guess that will improve with practice.Anyway here's the gorey details:

    Rep|Time|Pace
    #1|96.0secs|6:24
    #2|98.7secs|6:35
    #3|94.5secs|6:18
    #4|98.7secs|6:35
    #5|103.1secs|6:53
    #6|98.7secs|6:35
    #7|103secs|6:52
    #8|100.2secs|6:41
    #9|91.5secs|6:06
    #10|99.4secs|6:38

A little bit all over the place, some had a following wind though and some were into the wind but tried to keep the effort the same. Surprised at Rep 9 as thought I was beginning to struggle and had to dig deep for the last. legs are still feeling it this evening. Good to get another session under the belt though. A bit of a niggle in my hamstring/adductor just behind the knee. I've had this before when I push it hard in training or races so hopefully that'll heal itself over next couple of days.

    Great lunchtime workout!:D

Total with warmup/cool down was 5.9 miles

    Wednesday 8th Jan

    Enforced rest due to travelling.

    Thursday 9th Jan

Wasn't really in the mood for this, but a couple of miles in I was glad I stepped out the door to do it. Had the dinner and some of my son's chocolate birthday cake only an hour or so before so was a bit bloated on the way out but reckoned this might help slow me down:)

Pace was nice and easy and enjoyed the effortlessness (is that a word?) of it.

lovely night for a run. I had to take a boring rest day
So what's the time target for London? Can't wait to see how you do! Are there pacers and will you follow them?

Hiya :) Target time for London is 3:45. I think there are pacers for 3:40 and 3:50 so will probably try and keep the 3:40s in my sights. This is all assuming I get through this training plan unscathed! Last time I made it to week 5 before i started having injury problems (back) then it was very difficult to get a good block of uninterrupted training done without having to take some time off due to injuries (back/hamstring) before it was the knee that forced me out of DCM in the end. So getting to start line will be an achievement in itself. I think I'm training smarter this time round and not doing as many races so this should help. If I get all my LSRs in, I'll be fairly confident of hitting my target.

You doing the Raheny5 at the end of the month?

Super! Sounds like you have it all under control. I don't know much but from my simple point of view, the fact that you're doing a lot of your running at a much easier effort might stand to you on the injury front. You're just pushing it hard a few times a week and seem to be giving yourself plenty of time to recover between sessions/lsrs so fingers crossed this time it all goes to plan. I'll be rooting for you ;)
Original plan was for Raheny but I'm not quite sure yet. Not in the form for another disappointment after Santry but I know racing is good for me. Will decide very soon. I am tempted though:) You're doing it I presume?

We all have good days and bad days in races so keep doing them. You'll learn something in every race and eventually you'll have that perfect race and it'll be sweet! Raheny is a good race and nice and local so why not try it? I had to cheer on from the sidelines last year because of back problem so looking forward to doing it this year.

maybe;) Not very race confident atm but maybe that's a good reason to do it.
I was on sidelines last year also but had loads of fun as a spectator. Any half marathons in the plan before the big one?

I'm registered for the Meath (Bohermeen) half on March 2nd. The plan is to race this one and I may do the Balbriggan HM on March 17th and run it at marathon pace. Not fully decided on that though.

Easy run up around Howth/Sutton incorporating some hill work. Came across Dick Hooper putting his group through their paces there too. Beautiful morning for a run. Pace was a little faster than intended but the effort was definitely "Easy". A little discomfort in the knee area.I think this is referred from the ITB so some foam rolling will be done later.

    Sunday 12th Jan

Conditions seemed ok as we set off from clubhouse this morning for this run. Plan for me was 10miles with 6@PMP. PMP is 8:20-8:30/mi.

2miles warmup before the MP miles and then I kicked on a bit. For a change I was running ahead of my clubmates!:P Miles 4-6 were pretty difficult running into a vicious headwind along the coast at Clontarf. Happy with how this went although the pacing was a bit all over the shop with the conditions. The thoughts of doing 26 at that pace though are a bit daunting at the moment

Good session today. The wind was pretty strong here at times when I was out running so I'd be well happy with those MP miles. And don't worry Meno will have you well used to running at that pace before London ;)

    Tuesday 14th Jan

Ran home from work today. Had been a bit tired today and felt it during the run. I think my body is telling me something so I'm going to take a rest day tomorrow and push my session out to Thursday. Today was my 6th consecutive day running albeit last night was a very short one and split with a core class in between. It would be very easy to slip into an overtraining scenario now so I think the sensible thing is to listen to the body right now. I can still make the mileage up for the week even with another rest day so no panic.

Back to physio in morning for progress check with the knee.

Don't go chasing mileage later in the week if you feel like you are over training!! I felt on the verge once or twice and a couple of nights good sleep can work wonders.....well done on keeping the pace very slow tonight; in the circumstances that's the best thing to do.
You will find the hard sessions take much more out of you than easy mileage so dump that session if you are not feeling great by Thursday.
