    hi lads, this question is for a mate of mine looking to join
    he only knows one language "english" but is brushing up on his Irish for this (but too be honest I don't think hes very good at it , he can't quite grasp it )
    he wants to know if its worth his wild applying? even knowing only 1 language or would he be shot down over this

    edit: he also said he never done a third language for his leaving cert

    Taken from Garda Notes for applicants and conditions of service:

    (6) (A) (i) Have obtained an Irish Leaving Certificate with a grade D3 minimum in five subjects
    at ordinary level, or
    (ii) a Level 5 Certificate (Major award) on the National Framework of
    Qualifications (NFQ), or
    (iii) a qualification that, in the opinion of Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) is of a
    standard in terms of both level and volume of learning that is not lower than the standard
    of the qualification specified at (i) and (ii) above.
    AND
    (B) Must have a proven proficiency in two languages; one of which must be Irish or
    English    . Such competency may be proven by achieving the relevant grades or
    qualifications specified in (A) above, or for English or Irish through such
    assessments as set out by the Public Appointments Service.

    As you have said your friend only has leaving cert irish at foundation level, his only option is to find out about public appointment service holding a special exam on his irish. read more here

    stage 5 I think. if your successful at interview then you will do the physical. So plenty of time to practise dont worry!

    btw men's and women's are different standards eg. men have to do more sit ups and press-ups than our lady friends

    50% of them must be over weight.. saying that, I don't think it makes that much of a difference.

    What does the level mean for the shuttle test?

    The level in the shuttle test is the minimum you must reach in order to pass the test.
