If I was short of feed I'd be buying that .should be a top quality feed.50 50 beet maize mix delievered to yout yard for 55 a tonne sounds ok to me anyway.theres a lot of work in beet between harvesting it,washing it,chopping it then mixing it with maize and then to deliever it.

Ye I'd say it could be 1200e a load. The maize would be good for keeping the spring calved cows in good condition.
Considering teagasc say a DM is worth 30e a tonne

if you where buying in a load, would you not have to feed it quite quick does maize not heat easily?

We got some baled maize last year and put it through the diet feeder. It went mouldy quite quickly once the bale was opened.

The bales were serious weight. It only went mouldy around the outside.

    Iwas thinking the same.
What if I got two loads and got the contractor to pit it?

Get the test. Fodder beet or sugar beet? Should be around 25% dm , €220 a ton dm. Quality feed and convenient. You can check the value against concentrate using the following link.

Thats what I done a few yrs ago I bought 120 tonne and recovered it.
It worked out fine at the start but I wasnt using enough daily.
If you pit it make sure its only wide or narrow enough that you use all the face in 5 days.

The pit is 75ft long so I could put it the length of that. I'd say I'd be using a half a tonne a day out of it. At the start any way. If the feeding value was in it, it would be a better buy than bales of silage

What would an average barley and soya price be to enter there? Only got bagged stuff available here really, wouldn't know what bulk straights cost.

get the test, or ring up and ask a few questions, what was the starch in the maize, is it sugar beet or fodder. Whats the DM what is in the truck that is going to be delivering, washing and chopping beet can add lots of water if done as part of the one job. At €55 a ton it could be very good value or no value depending on the spec. the seller is straight

Soya 450/480 today. Didn't price barley lately but would assume 210/220. Prices bulk blown.

Agreed that it would probably be better than bales, which can be risky. Actually Jersey, did you say your silage only tested at 66% dmd? Using the likes of that feed could give the cows a nice boost. If its sugarbeet, whats the max % of the cows diet you should use? My uncle lost 10 or so cows a few years back after he overfeed sugarbeet, my dad wont touch it as a result!

You could go to 25kg, starting at 5 and rising gradually. This feed will be low in protein and will need to be balanced for minerals.

Ye the silage is 66 DMD and cows getting 6kg of 16% .95 ufl nuts. And getting pure phosphorus and trace elements in there water

next to impossible to incorporate that level of feeding where there is freshly calved cows joining the herd all the time ... those levels would blow her to kingdom come :)

Must take a look. Is it about Ger, or is it about his take on what it takes to be a successful athlete? I'd be more interested in the latter.

Agree with you wholeheartedly. I love reading about these highly successful and inspirational people. Better than listening to doom and gloom merchants any day of the week. I avoid them as much as I can til be honest. Life is too short ;)
