The stats generally paint a very good picture of a match.
Of course hitting shots at the right time is huge also.

They only paint half the picture though, in any sport much less a psychological one like darts. That's why in the States, in which the idea of moneyballing and relying on stats has become integral to sports analysis, they also have an established concept of 'the eye test', which accounts for the stuff that the stats don't see. A performance where Taylor hits a 107 average and 80% doubles against a qualifier, for instance, isn't as impressive as one where a no 3 seed beats a no 4 seed in a tight game with a 98 average with crucial doubles and high scores hit at the right time.

Relying on stats takes context out of account, when context is in fact crucial to everything that's going on.

As was said above, add Anderson and minus huybrechts. But I also think chisnall will struggle to keep his place. Webster has a better chance of creeping back in after his performances, or possibly Smith? A Taylor/Smith rematch would be money!

Nice.....Going to be rooting for him too. He's been amazing so far plus I can't stand the cocky MvG.

If you don't like cocky players, you may want to rethink your support of Wright.

I recall he said before his QF that Michael Smith simply wasn't good enough to beat him. That's pretty cocky.

I expect the final to be close enough.
Wright throwing style won't suit MVG, who likes to get on with things, but
I think Van Gerwen will have the bottle when it counts. 7-5

Anyone watching the replay at the moment? What is the referee wearing on his ear. Looks like a camera?

someone said it was for 3d or something, watching it again and the only flaw i can find in that game was that it wasnt taylor on the end of the 6-0 ,for a change, few sets of flights would have been ate threw :)

I go to Citywest every year with the lads. We watch most of the Darts and have some slagging and we get pissed - I enjoy it and enjoy the event regardless of the standard on show.

I'm here today rewatching last nights semis with sound (pub had it on silent last night) and I cannot believe that in a match of real quality the crowd continue with the Kolo Yaya chant - what pleasure does this give these morons? Absolute retarded.

two of the best players in the world, capable of 9darters in the big games, who have had gigantic recent clashes ,and the crowd are facing away taunting each other mid match ..

    mind boggling tbh

imagine being in the crowd, a 9darter goes in,and ya dont see it coz your facing the other way,on purpose.

Looking forward to the final tomorrow, traveling over the Christmas meant I didn't get to see too much of the darts, funny that the two players I did manage to see most of have made the final.

Was delighted to get to see both semi finals last night. Have been really impressed with Wright from what I have seen of him this tournament, but I will be rooting for MVG.

Last night I was expecting MVG to have one of those drop off periods that he has so often, I suppose he did right on the line but he managed to close it out at 6-0. I think he would have been disappointed not to win that one 6-0 which in a way shows how good he was last night. As others have said he rattled Lewis at all the right times.

Maybe because I like him I didn't see his arrogance or cockiness in the post match interview? I thought he was alright. It is a fine line between arrogance and a sort of anger during the games from him for me, I think he needs the chest pumping et al to feed off.

Van Gerwen seems to be coming across as more of a tosser every time I see him being interviewed. Is he letting it go to his head.

MvG has been my favourite player for a couple of years now. One of the biggest things I liked about him was how modest he was, but he's gotten awful cocky all of a sudden which I'm not liking. I still hope he wins, and manages to rediscover his old humble self soon.

i love the darts new boys we get in these threads every year!!

I might be new to boards but have watched darts for 20 odd years and I'm only 32!!

I was in 2 minds between Anderson and hybrechts but will stick with it

Think it'll be a very good match tomorrow night. Think MVG will win but i'll be rooting for Wright.

Have a feeling Wright could take the final. Very steady and no fear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 207 ✭✭Spiderpig92

Really hoping Snakebite does the business, but to win, he has to average 100 +. If not, MVG will stroll to the title I feel. If Wright can hit form like he has and take the first set or 2, all he has to do is play the same steady game he has done for the whole championship and he will win it.Easier said than done I know! If he is below 95 there is no hope for him i'm afraid!

I'm praying the Toure chant is just a once off for this tournament. Cringeworthy stuff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,233 ✭✭✭robman60

Really looking forward to tonight! I'd love to see snakebite win it as he's been the epitome of cool for the whole tournament. As well as that, there's a certain element of rooting for the underdog!

As a side note, I loved Lewis' interview after such a hefty defeat. No whining, just saying how he'll dust himself down and be back stronger than ever. That undying self belief is admirable.

Think it started when the qualifiers came out to no limit, may have been a football chant before but started at the darts after that. If you saw the old finals showed before Christmas all the ones in circus tavern the silence was a world away from what we get now. I think most of the players acknowledge that they wouldn't be playing for as much money if they didn't sell out venues like ally pally 02 etc, which leads itself to more of an 'atmosphere' as sky call it. I'm all for support and cheering on the players but turning your back just to chant these songs is a bit much

It's the first to 7 sets, not 6.

They do. That's exactly their attitude. Spoke with Steve Beaton after the Van Gerwen King Grand Prix final in Dublin and I said I thought the way the crowd turned on King was pretty harsh. He just shrugged it off and said they are paid a lot of money these days to put up with whatever the crowd say or do, and it's that crowd that contribute so much to the prize fund so they have no real complaints.

I think MvG will have too much for Wright and will win by 3 or 4 sets.

More than half imo, I can go on the PDC website at night time and using all the stats there can get a good idea of exactly how the game went.

Disagree totally about your Taylor example as well, 107 average and 80% on doubles is more impressive.

Either way taking seedings into account is part of using stats.

Don't think so. They should have some sort of warm though IMO.

We'll agree to disagree. Personally I'd be more impressed by someone who grinded out a hard-fought victory against, say, Raymond van Barneveld than someone who coasted against Morihiro Hashimoto, but different strokes and all that.
