It's a shame that Lewis hasn't dropped to Number 4 in the world.
That way Taylor would have to beat both him and MVG; as long as they remain 2+3 they play each other in the semi-final whilst Taylor cruises through and only has to peak once.
Like his path this year (if seedings don't change) is qualifier, Michael Smith, Peter Wright, Wes Newton, Whitlock, Final.

Yeah it's definitely looking like an easy route to the final for Taylor bar Whitlock if he gets that far. But sure Taylor is expected to beat everyone anyway do does it really matter?

Roll on Dec 13th, the official start date for Christmas 2013! I'm heading over for the semi-finals and final as usual, really looking forward to it.

Here's the entries into todays qualifiers. There's plenty of Irish interest.

No Ted Hankey entered into the draw though, did he just not bother to try and qualify?

What's the format here? is the board you're on basically a section of the draw?

Adrian Gray, Alex Roy gone already.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,264 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kingp35

Yeah you need to win your board to get through to the latter stages.

Rumours around saying that Hankey is going back to the BDO which is why he didn't enter.

Matt Clark beat Ian Moss 5-0 in the final of this today. Both progress to the worlds, Clark enters in first round, Moss in the preliminary

Why not? Obviously he won't be playing in this years BDO World Championships but the reason he hasn't entered the PDC one is because he would receive a ban from entering BDO tournaments for 180 days as you can't have played in any PDC tournaments for the previous 180 days if you want to enter a BDO tournament. The time limit increases to 365 days from next year.

he didnt qualify for this years pdc worlds and would have had to enter that thing monday to try get the last 2 spots which was a long shot with alot of decent players in it.
i find it hard to see him go back to bdo with the trouble he caused but i suppose this is hankey so anything is possible

hes not good enough for the pdc circuit, but the die hard bdo guys thought he would do well due to a few results in grand slam

He did enter Saturdays qualifying tournament but decided not to play in it despite paying the entry fees. Everything he has done in last 6 months screams that he is moving back. Personally I think it's the right decision because he isn't good enough for the BDO. As you saw though he won't exactly be welcomed back there with open arms after his carry on at the BDO World Championships.

    Which "Saturday" qualifying tournament?

Sorry it was on Monday. It was the PDPA qualifier for the Worlds where all members not qualified were playing for the final two spots.

Those results include beating Phil Taylor, Michael Van Gerwen and Simon Whitlock. No bad record. I think people thought he would do well on the basis of his talent, clearly he's had both drinking and health issues which might well mean he really isn't up to the PDC Circuit any more, as is reflected in his standing now.

So anyone spot any good bets for this years World Championship?

I have bet on Lewis for the last 3 years and did so again this year at 6/1.

Remember when he won it at 25/1.....(sigh)

Years ago tennis realised it had a problem with sticking to the traditional draw bracket which sees 1v32, 2v31, 3v30, 4v29 followed in the next round by 1v16,2v15,3v14 and eventually in the semi final 1v4 and 2v3.

Problem was that it was quite easy to be stuck at a ranking like 15/16 or 31/32 as you were always facing the no1 or 2. You could be potentially a top10 player but always getting beaten by Federer would keep you in the same lowly spot.
Also from a spectator view point the last 16, quarter final and semi final pairings were the same for a few tournaments running as the top players went through a phase of ultra consistency..

So what they did was to randomise the bracket within each grouping whilst maintaining the seedings, thus the last 32 could be 1 v18, 2 v 21, 3 v 26 etc.
All the way down to the semi finals which could either be 1v4 or 1v3.

Much better way of doing it imo, and solves what I think is a big problem that Taylor only ever has to beat 1 of MVG/Lewis whilst they have to get two big victories. And this situation is likely to stay for the short/medium future as MVG&Lewis look guaranteed to be 2 and 3 for all of next season.

So anyone spot any good bets for this years World Championship?

Any further suggestions on this? I'm looking to do one of these 'x to beat y in the final' bets on Taylor/MVG and Taylor/Lewis (should cover all bases:P) but can't see one at any of the bookies.

  • Registered Users Posts: 482 ✭✭Treble20

Personally I see the winner coming from either Taylor,Van Gerwen or Lewis. Can't see any of the rest causing a major upset.

For the punters out there Ladbrokes have an offer available. If Taylor wins the World Championship they will refund all losing bets on players to win the World Championship outright.

I'm sure Ladbrokes would have this type bet available considering their the sponsors of the World Championship?

PP have them now but the odds aren't great. In fact 1. Taylor 2. Lewis at PP 10/3, whereas a Taylor/Lewis final is 4/1 at Ladbrokes.

Still might have a crack at a couple of those bets, even though it would probably only about double my money overall if one came good...

It would be a popular pick a Taylor v Lewis final and also a Taylor v Van Gerwen final. I might try an adventurous bet myself by betting on John Part to reach the quarter finals,i'm sure he'll be good odds for that.

But is it a sure enough thing to lay say €70 on the two together, given that you'll only win about €150 if one comes off? There are dangerous floaters like Wade in the draw, who could topple Lewis if he has a big game...

Anyone think Huybrechts is a good bet at 4s to win his quarter. Only has Whitlock and Hamilton/Winstanley to beat who I would fancy him to beat anyway. Think it is a good price myself and I would rate him the best in the quarter anyway
