Is being late for dinner rude?

If it is my friends are very rude. I have organised a lovely dinner for 2 of my friends before we go out to the pub tonight and told them I need them here at 6. No later.

It is now 6.15 and no sign of them. One text about 10 mins ago to say she will be here in 20.

They are always late. One of them has an excuse as she is a carer for her mum but the other is just so frustrating.

Now the chicken is nearly ready while the starter hasnt been eaten yet.

It drives me mad....Is it too much to ask for people to be on time?

    Punctuality doesn't suit the Irish.

Yes, it's rude. Even worse if they bring chips. Only cook nice stuff for friends who will appreciate it Witchie - I learned that the hard way, weeping silently into the washing-up as they all fecked off to the pub, having eaten their own chips and left most of my food untouched. :(

If they're always late, you should have told them to be there at five. One of my friends is a minimum of two hours late to everything so i arrange to meet him two hours before I actually plan to leave my house.

Maybe factor this in next time? Some people think it's rude to arrive on the dot.

    Bon appetite!

It's very rude if someone has taken the time to cook a meal. Also, answering calls or texts at the dinner table - that should be a paddlin' offence.

Where are you. I'll eat it. That'll teach them to be late!!

Murphy's law states that they'd arrive just before five in this scenario and there would be no food ready :)

I was told in Ireland it's rude to be on time. I showed up on time and host was still in a dressing gown.

I dunno... for me if you mean 7, say 7, not six and then be shocked when they show up at 6.

Everyone can be unavoidably late on occasion, but I know people that waffle on about their serial lack of punctuality like it's indicative of a daring riposte to conventionality but let's be honest, it just means they're being ignorant cunts

    it's really rude.
late people annoy me - i also hate it when thyn think ringing you while you are waiting on them excuses or mitigates their lateness.
    It doesn't.

I did consider telling them earlier but thought that just this once, since I was making such an effort for them, that they might arrive on time.

    Menu is:

    Starter:
Roasted Mediterranean Vegetables and Feta tartlets on a bed of salad

    Main:
    Vegetable and Cheese Pasta Bake
Chicken fillets stuffed with Pesto, Mozzerella & herbs (bread crumbed coating)
    Herby Home Fries

    Dessert:

Cinnamon Roll Bread Pudding with Tia Maria Custard
    & A Cheese board.

Made everything from scratch bar the cinnamon rolls.

It used to annoy the hell out of me back in uni when you'd arrange to meet people in a pub at a certain time and they'd arrive at least an hour later leaving you there on your own like an eejit, why say you will meet at a time when you have no intention of doing so??

Had a similar friend and I just stood him up a few times until he got the message.

Take it down to the homeless shelter OP and leave a note on the door telling your friends to bugger off, that'll learn 'em

    Who thinks this???

    Idiots, that's who.

    Maybe they are.

Here's a quote from expert Peggy Post (no, me neither), on the Opera Winfrey website:
    A dinner party
Regional customs vary, from being on time to arriving 15, or even 30, minutes late. (And it's rude to arrive early; you might surprise the host and find him in his bathrobe vacuuming.)

France's "The Local" news in English has this advice:
Arrive 15 minutes late – While in many countries this may be considered rude, in France this is a golden rule. “It’s an unspoken agreement between the host and the guest because the host might be a little late preparing everything and the guest won’t want to embarrass the host by arriving early,” says Lepère. (seems to be a rent-a-quote blogger)

Not saying it's right - but these people exist, and you did ask!

Which is exactly why no one arrives exactly on time. Factor it into your own calculations

Then you'd be just on time for the cinnamon rolls and miss the first 2 courses :pac:

Nothing there that will spoil if left a little late to serve.
