I recall that Paolo Di Canio (an Italian footballed, later a football manager) has gotten in trouble for his 'alleged' fascist leanings in the past. Not sure whether he was ever punished or not.

Nothing "alleged" about it, he freely admits he is a fascist, but not the bad kind, whatever that is.

Racism that you agree with is ok though. You don't have a problem with islamophobia like.
    Is that not sectarianism?

This thread is asking for trouble. Consider OPs post history. Don't get caught up.

Said player defended himself. Unsure what his motives were but it would seem bizarre to use such a gesture in a discriminatory way to celebrate victory. Seems to be more complicated than anti-Semitism given his statement but who knows? It'll probably be investigated and dealt with. Let's hope it was a case of misinterpretation.

    1. camel jockey
term used in derogatory fashion to describe anyone from the middle east

Also someone who engages in camel racing. As someone with a long standing interest in the popular sport, I deemed it a suitable and appropriate username.

Unfortunately it seems to have an unanticipated meaning for those in the know.

Can't go any further as the pro-Israeli goons are waiting in the wings with their bellies full of manufactured indignation.
    Shalom!

So you definition or racism doesn't extend to anti-Semitism. Nice to know.

Well I don't know too much about it and I'm not going to get involved in any heated discussions, but I will say that footballers are generally not known for their great intelligence.

Sounds like the usual whine about racism any time someone pulls up a religious body for their bull****.

    "Islamophobia". "Anti-Semitism".

    Two ludicrously overused words.

    Edit:
It would appear that I was too hasty. While what I said is largely true, in this case, Dieudonné is definitely an utter **** and a racist.

Anti-Zionism does not equal Anti-Semitism. By definition Zionism is a xenophobic philosophy.

I wouldn't say they are less intelligent than the general public.

Political Correctness gone mad I think. I believe the footballer and the comedian are innocent, and it's just people blowing things out of proportion.

Good grief, the comedian in France who coined the gesture has publicly explained that it is an anti-establishment and anti-Zionist gesture. Comparing anti-Zionism with antisemitism is like comparing anti IRA sentiment with hatred for everything Irish.

    http://www.hopenothate.org.uk/blog/nick/article/3292/a-profile-of-a-french-antisemite

    1. Denies the Holocaust, mocked holocaust while giving heroism award to a Holocaust denier.
    2. Blames Jews for the Slave trade and anything else he can tag them for.
    3. Has been prosecuted over anti-Semitic remarks.
    4. Strong associations with Marie Le Pen(another holocaust denier with a sordid past and present) and the National Front

    That's not anti-Zionism...

So the racist says he is not racist. That's the end of the story?

What act of racism did he commit?

I can't for the life of me see any racism in what he did, he has explained his actions and even the guy that invented the gesture has explained quite clearly what it means, i really think this is a load of bull by White middle aged idiots in positions of power,

Also the name camel jockey is highly derogatory, why didn't you just call yourself, towel head or sand monkey

Your pleas of innocence are both insulting and ignorant

Its a bit mad that he is being called a racist because the gesture resembles the Nazi salute but it is clearly not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,939 ✭✭✭Dave0301

So I hear you're a racist now Father Anelka?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 723 ✭✭✭Daqster

Anelka with Dieudonné the originator of the salute.

    Some of his court convictions:
On 14 June 2006, Dieudonné was sentenced to a penalty of 4,500 Euro for defamation after having called a prominent Jewish television presenter a "secret donor of the child-murdering Israeli army".

On 15 November 2007, an appellate court sentenced him to a 5,000 Euro fine because he had characterized "the Jews" as "slave traders" after being attacked in his theater le Théâtre de la Main d'Or.

On 26 June 2008, he was sentenced in the highest judicial instance to a 7,000 Euro fine for his characterization of Holocaust commemorations as "memorial pornography".

On 27 February 2009, he was fined 75,000 Canadian dollars in Montreal for defamatory statements against the singer and actor Patrick Bruel after he called him a "liar" and an "Israeli soldier".

On 26 March 2009, Dieudonné was fined a total of 3,000 Euros for defamation after having criticised Elisabeth Schemla, a Jewish journalist who ran the now defunct Proche-Orient.Info website. He declared on 31 May 2005 that the website wanted to "eradicate Dieudonné from the audiovisual landscape" and had said of him that "he's an anti-Semite, he's the son of Hitler, he will exterminate everyone".

On 27 October 2009, he was sentenced to a fine of 10,000 Euros for "public insult of people of Jewish faith or origin" related to his show with Robert Faurisson.

    Sounds like a nice guy.

So apparantly people can't make gestures made popular by some guy that may or may not be anti-Semitic but more likely is anti-Zionist and has no historical pedigree; and which none of us necessarily know, until now because? Because what. It's political whatchemary gone wheatabix.

I'd post the Stephen fry video on offence but people only post that when Christians are offended.

Some people are latching onto the belief that he is simply anti-Zionism which is completely untrue.

It wasn't racist at all. Anybody thinking it's racism doesn't understand the gesture.

Disgusting racist behaviour from Anelka while celebrating his first goal yesterday

    http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/25537686

Let's hope those who oppose Racism also oppose his actions, and are as vocal about it as they are about all other forms of racism.

    Are you Jewish?

Don't be so naive. The gesture is deliberately ambiguous.

If Dieudonné is such an innocent, how comes he keeps the company of people like Bruno Gollnisch, a member of the National Front?
