I know that this website might have an agenda and that part worn tyres can be safe if inspected properly but I saw this and thought others might think there is some value in watching it.

I have never fitted part worns myself but have considered it in the past. I have about 2 and a bit mm of thread on the front tyres (bridgestones) of my car. These are going to be changed at the cars next service in a few weeks time. Having seen this video my thoughts on partworns are gone. It will be €100 a pop for two new tyres.

They are talking about defective tyres being sold as part worns, Part worns are fine if you buy from the right places, my part worns cost 70 each and have 80% thread left, not dangerous at all.

I am not saying that people shouldnt use part worns or that they should. I just think that this website has some information people might like to know.

I'd never buy part-worn tyres myself, regardless - As your man said, they've been removed already from a car/van/truck. Why were they removed...?
No way of telling the truth behind why the tyres were removed.

I've had a blow out on a part-worn tyre before on the motorway, two days after purchasing my car(Was told the tyres were new)
Scared the ****e out of me. Also found out that the the wheel nuts miss matched and the wheel brace could only get at two of them. Spent a good hour flagging several cars down until I finally got a mechanic.
Went to get a new tyre, and guy said it was due to metal (Like in the video) rubbing the tyre. He even brought the old tyre out and showed it to me. Said he could fit another part-worn tyre if I like for 50(I think...) I opted for the new for €100 and have no regrets.
While he was at it, he checked the others to make sure they were ok, and said they were all fine.

Just so everyone knows, I'm not saying all part-worns are a loads of ****e, but I just wouldn't trust them regardless anymore.

I'm always wary of people like the guy in the video rubbishing things that might be hurting the pockets of big manufacturers. I've come across it many times in my line of work where anything that might be saving the consumer a few quid is set upon with vigor by the big businesses that make their fortunes out of products that consumers can't do without which they consequently overcharge for.

The OP may well be right but beware of scaremongering.

Just like anything bought second hand, you must be extra cautious in your inspection of the goods. Good quality, premium brand part worn tyres are considerably safer than new Wing Wang Wongs from China.

The tyre industry doesn't like the sale of part worns and for obvious reasons, it impacts on their profits. Don't buy into the propoganda.

I'd prefer part worn michelins to brand new nankangs, or the like,and I have replaced all four Chinese tyres on cars to branded part worns on a few cars , which then, utterly changed the whole cars attitude, handling , ride and comfort, for the better ,

one low mileage car which before changing the tyres, from Chinese to part worn michelins (2) and pirellis (2), went from something I suspected might have been clocked to a car that drove and good as a new one, unbelievable.

Tallaght tyres supply great,personally inspected part worns that they get in from Germany.

sure aren't all cars driving around on part worn tyres? i fitted 4 brand new uniroyal rainsports 2 weeks ago, they are now officially part worns therefore they must be dangerous and taken off immediately!

Got 2 part worn Good Years October 2012, just changed them last week for 2 part worn Bridgestones from the same place. I've been using the same place for ages and never had an issue.
I always get ones with lots of thread. €35 each for 205/55R16, I wouldn't buy cheapo new ones.

They can be good value but not always.

Check how much tread is left on them and the age.

They should be x-rayed for sidewall damage and checked for flat spots.

I'd say the Irish crowds are making a killing off these 'German' tyres, I know a guy that owns a big place in Venlo. They get reputable brands for between 8 and 12 euros a tyre in bulk from Germany.

on eBay a mate of mine was making good money off buying tyres locally in Germany and then selling them in the UK for a 3-4 times what he paid for them.

Best sale when he picked up a set of Michelin ALPIN A4s, just a year old for 25 euros (yer man had misspelled Michelin or something)

Managed to sell them for 180 quid sterling in the UK.

Tire place I was in last week had a big poster on the wall about the evils of part worn tires (something along the lines of "you wouldnt use someone elses waste" and a picture of a rotten apple core). This was the same place that had initially tried to sell me Triangle tires or some such similar ****e. I laughed.

Nothing wrong with part worns, provided they are inspected properly. Every car on the road is running part worns of some description after all!

You've got to wonder why part-worn tyres are available. If the car they came off is on the scrap heap, I'd like to think the tyres would be too.

I know someone (neighbour) who recently put €380 worth of tyres on a €300 car which is now without a working engine.

Per mm wear that you get out of them new tyres are usually always cheaper

I'm not so sure, in my case, the Bridgestones I got are €97 each, I got mine for €35 each.
For new ones to be better value, there'd have to be 2.7 times the tread mm on the new ones compared to the PWs.

Doesn't a bloke who's being driving for a good few years know a decent set of tyres when he sees them anyway?

I would hope I'd be able to tell a well worn one from a partly worn one just by looking at it. I mean its kind of obvious, isn't it?

reuse recycle etc.. i think summer tyres are fine as part worn, the use of winter tyres part worn is questionable as its recommended to change at 4mm so i dont know how effective they are once you go below that.

That's exactly what the tyre trade would like you to think. If you apply your mind to it, you may come up with a different answer.....

The car they came off is more likely to have been traded in to a main dealer and the old tyres taken off as part of the standard procedure of being tarted up for a sale with a service, valet and new rubber. Nothing sinister about the practice at all.

For every secondhand car in a main dealer forecourt, there is a set of four part-worn tyres lying somewhere waiting for an owner to use the remaining rubber. I currently have 3-4mm tread on my tyres, there are thousands of part-worn tyres sitting in yards all over the country with more tread than that, most of them are perfectly safe to fit to your car.

Wouldnt be surprised if SIMI came up with a similar campaign trying to convince people used cars are dangerous and everybody should buy new :rolleyes:

Certified by who ?

His tyres come from a center that's TÜV Certified.

There is no International certification for Part Worn Tyres as far as I know.

Winter tyres are mandatory in Germany/Finland/Austria/Sweden and a few more afaik

Maybe tyre-fitters there won't remount used tyres ?

Got 2 part-worn 18" Michelin's last week with about 70/80% left on them for €100. Have done about 700 km of mostly motorway on them since and not a bother!

A lot more palatable than the €90-130 each I was being quoted for new/lesser brands.

Nope, most if not all of them offer a storage option and most people would keep a set at home on crappy steel rims.

Myself I have a set of spare original Volvo alloys (205/55/R16) that I picked up in Dusseldorf-Hamm for 280 euros including a set of Vredestein Winters.

AFAIK the bulk of the supply comes from the massive leasing market in Germany.

They won't put one person part worns on another car though.

Have you bounced up any kerbs in them? You know how they've been treated and if they've had any repairs. You don't know with 2nd hand tyres . I've bought them in the past but to say it's the same as tyres you've bought and used yourself is not true .

This is already happening, not SIMI which are just a dealers grouping but the RSA have a consultation on the use of Part worn Tyres.
