When I look at how I spend my time online....it seems like not having a computer might be a good thing.

On the other hand, where else will you get 34+ people 'thanking' you for just saying something?

I was given a second hand dell laptop about five years ago. Still the one I use today. If I hadn't been given a computer, I wouldn't have bought one. As I'll never have to type another essay again, I'm not sure I'd bother replacing this one when it goes kaboom. They're handy, but they're not necessary. Take this post here for example. I'm having a coffee while waiting for somebody. I'm killing time on boards. If I was at home, I wouldn't be online. The small bit of internettin' I do is generally done on the phone while out and about.

    6,200 post on Boards?

These people will never know we're talking about them.

The internet's great! I'm in the process of conducting a very lucrative financial deal with a member of the Nigerian royal family.

No tv or TV licence in this house, never was since we came here 30 years ago. Not the same thing, but perhaps not all that different either. The interweb has eroded the charm though.
House quiet atm, all gone off to the library for a stash of paper Christmas books.

So you've never seen Father Ted then?

Or any of the spectacular David Attenborough nature documentaries?

    Or any Horizon science documentaries?

Or do you just download them on your computer?

When I was a court clerk I used to get letters from County Registrars written on typewriters. This was about 2006 and I thought typewriters were long gone. Corresponding with them was an absolute pain because of the time it would take with all the toing and froing.

My Dad took a computer course when he retired. I think Word and Excel was a bit much for him and he had no interest or use for these things. He has used the internet more since the course though. We got him a smart phone for his birthday and he's getting a tablet for Christmas. He loves his banking app, he was just ringing the bank before to track his finances. He loves horse racing and he's always watching old horse races on Youtube now. I still have to buy anything he needs from the internet, book tickets and pay his bills for him on my laptop. In the new year I'll sit him down and show him how to do these things and hopefully he'll be able to do it himself after a little while. He is definitely making progress though. My uncle (in his 70s) would not even know how to turn on a computer. He would often ring me to ask me to check something out for him on the internet. It's usually something you'd find on Wikipedia so I'd print it out and post it to him. No sending links to him :)

My mother used to complain I was spending too much time on my computer years ago.

Now at the age of 67 she lives on Facebook playing all the games on it.

My father is 68 and he uses Photoshop a lot. He only started using it 4 years ago.

I was reading one of them when I registered on Boards and couldn't think of a username. The name speaks a lot of sense.

I just don't know what people do with their time if they don't have the Internet.

I think it's a bit sad if you can't figure that out to be honest. I mostly use the internet for to help with research or in general to look something up. Occasionally I post on a forum.

For my free time I like to actually do stuff and go places. It's good to get out of the house. Some weekends I go hiking with friends or just hang out somewhere for coffee/lunch. At home I like to cook so I often prepare my own sauces and marinades, I enjoy taking my time with it, it's quite relaxing actually. (internet is a great source of recipes so it helped this hobby grow). I play guitar to so sometimes I play that.

I recently signed up for netflix so my internet time will bump up significantly since I've alot of shows to catch up on. But that replaces TV so it balances out. I don't get withdrawal symptoms without the internet though, in fact I'm starting to enjoy life more and more that less I use it!!

hmmm the next thread it will be people without smartphones. I just don't like touchscreen phones at all.

People who can live mostly without computers probably have more interesting hobbies.

The tech just seems to move so fast these days. I'd say most people over 40,such as myself, are punch-drunk with all the new developments.

Jeez. I remember when Colour TV was the cutting edge of technology.

People still lived and breathed & got on with their lives.

    Mad innit?

Could go quite happily without having one at home. But since I have'em,I'm not gonna go throw'em away. I can't stand the way there seems to be an expectation that everyone has one and has access to the internet, with a lot of companies pushing their customer support through online webforms.

Don't watch normal TV anymore, don't seem to have an arial point coming into the house (got a Saorview box but there doesn't appear to be an arial!). Watch what i want on Netflix, but my PC is hooked up to the TV and i'm mostly gaming.

Wouldn't be able to live without my tech, be it the laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc. I'm a tech junkie, and if i had the money the house would be full of useless but cool tech gadgets!

I feel sorry for the older (and sometimes younger) generation who can't do tech, they're missing out on so much which i'm sure they'd enjoy. But the downside is that the internet is so unfriendly to non-tech people it's scary to them.

One word of advice for someone trying to get relatives into the internet, buy Eset NOD32, it won't allow them to install/open anything dodgy. Best anti-virus on the market!
