Computers have been around Quite a while now and most Irish people own one, However some people do not have one.I know a Doctor who has no Computer in his office and two of my friends do not have computers either.does it sound strange to you that somebody in Ireland doesn't own a computer in this day and age ?

When I look at how I spend my time online....it seems like not having a computer might be a good thing.

I'm sure they get by fine with their wireless and their picture box.

Not really, some people just missed the whole PC revolution & opted to stay blissfully in the era they were accustomed to...

    Personally, I'd be fookd without my PC's / broadband / smart-phone etc.

I doubt it. If you're not managing your time productively now, you'd just be passively absorbing some other entertainment.

yes, normally the older generation though Seem to know many 50+ without comps.

I know 57 year old, who just got one, is terrified to anything more than skype on it.
Tried to download a game for him he freaked out. "No, No, I don't want it anymore, Don't know what it'll do the computer, I may not know how to use it" I was right there to show him, and patiently, but he wasn't having it \=.

What I really don't get, is the odd younger gen being afraid of computers/not knowing the basics. \=

agreed, if you would like to see how much time you spend or better say waste, just keep a time track, you can even use excel for it, start with the time you get up till the time you go to bed, (8:00 am, 8:30 am and so on) and write in detail what you did not just like i was on facebook, go in details so you find out where you spend the time so you can correct it, worked for me

well when im not on a computer im normally just reading a book or out with friends,It does feel quite alienating without a computer, I dont think my friends are too bothered about getting a computer, never asked them why they dont have one certainly isn't for financial reasons

What about people who spend hundreds on a laptop but don't bother with broadband,I actually know a couple of those, bizarre thought process.

No tv or TV licence in this house, never was since we came here 30 years ago. Not the same thing, but perhaps not all that different either. The interweb has eroded the charm though.

One girl told me she plays solitaire and that's about it,a deck of cards is €2.Was talking to a woman the other day in Argos, told her I reserved stuff online, she babbled on about not using a computer or having a clue about smartphones, this woman has 14 yr old boys,so it's not as if she's Peig Sayers.

I was given a second hand dell laptop about five years ago. Still the one I use today. If I hadn't been given a computer, I wouldn't have bought one. As I'll never have to type another essay again, I'm not sure I'd bother replacing this one when it goes kaboom. They're handy, but they're not necessary. Take this post here for example. I'm having a coffee while waiting for somebody. I'm killing time on boards. If I was at home, I wouldn't be online. The small bit of internettin' I do is generally done on the phone while out and about.

well i know the feeling, i did try a few days without my android phone and i took my mothers old phone (i just can't tell you which phone i am too ashamed lol)
it felt kind of strange at first but then i started to think what if i get an urgent email from my employers, i can do without my computer no problem but not longer than day, i think your friends enjoy the free time too much to have it taken away by machines:pac:

I don't have a computer. Posting this from my Xbox.
I really miss a keyboard at times like this.

It took me years to convince my mum to get one. She always said she wouldn't know how to work one but I kept saying if you can work a mobile you will be able to work it too. Eventually she gave in and bought a cheap netbook I picked for her to start with. That was about 2 years ago and now she's never off it. She even went to a wee class at her community house to learn even more of the basics. Her netbook got broke and she was on the phone saying how hard it was without it for things like even checking her bank and paying bills and this time she wanted me to pick her out a decent notebook.

Liam Gallagher is a famous technophobe, he spoke recently about his agent working his Twitter account on his behalf and his ongoing basic computer skills trials. Also a great defender of the physical copy of music recordings, making a point of releasing the Beady Eye album 'Be' on vinyl. He's not a hipster he's old school even though he's only 41.

I think for anyone say under 40, it's a bit strange for me if they don't have a computer. I am a complete and utter nerd and hate even being offline for a few hours and while I understand that other people aren't nearly as bad as me I just don't know what people do with their time if they don't have the Internet.

The whole buying a laptop and skipping the broadband thing reminded me of y friends house, they have broadband but no computer and use the broadband on their phones, they borrow a laptop every now and then but that's it, I find it very strange.

You need computers for even basic things now, my folks are getting more and more frustrsted that they have to rely on me to do things for them online, like pay bills or book holidays. They realise doing it old school is costing them money
My Dad has even started an Internet course!

He's Liam Gallagher. He's probably doesn't use Twitter because he can't read and write much. We can only be grateful to be spared his delusional ramblings anyway.

That is all fine and good for simple things but not everything is accessible with mobile or that mobile doesn't contain the feature a computer packs.. I agree mobile is handy but sometimes one just need to go with pc

So you've never seen Father Ted then?

Or any of the spectacular David Attenborough nature documentaries?

    Or any Horizon science documentaries?

Or do you just download them on your computer?

When I was a court clerk I used to get letters from County Registrars written on typewriters. This was about 2006 and I thought typewriters were long gone. Corresponding with them was an absolute pain because of the time it would take with all the toing and froing.

My Dad took a computer course when he retired. I think Word and Excel was a bit much for him and he had no interest or use for these things. He has used the internet more since the course though. We got him a smart phone for his birthday and he's getting a tablet for Christmas. He loves his banking app, he was just ringing the bank before to track his finances. He loves horse racing and he's always watching old horse races on Youtube now. I still have to buy anything he needs from the internet, book tickets and pay his bills for him on my laptop. In the new year I'll sit him down and show him how to do these things and hopefully he'll be able to do it himself after a little while. He is definitely making progress though. My uncle (in his 70s) would not even know how to turn on a computer. He would often ring me to ask me to check something out for him on the internet. It's usually something you'd find on Wikipedia so I'd print it out and post it to him. No sending links to him :)

My mother used to complain I was spending too much time on my computer years ago.

Now at the age of 67 she lives on Facebook playing all the games on it.

My father is 68 and he uses Photoshop a lot. He only started using it 4 years ago.
