Another great comedian who's gone into hiding over the last decade or so was Dave Chappelle. Most would know him from Chappelle's Show or "the cruel standup guy in The Nutty Professor with the 's**t-locks'), but his standup work is his best in my opinion. He blows Chris Rock away with his stuff on race...

Personally, I'm a big fan of Trevor Noah - he's coming to Vicar Street on 31 January 2014, and I'm so keen I bought my tickets in October already :)

Of course, my finding him funny might be a cultural thing, say a lot of his material would be lost on anyone who hasn't spent time living in or travelling around South Africa.

I saw him on one of the English panel shows recently and he was brilliant. Really funny.

Came across him a few weeks ago. He does a similar short set on live at the Apollo. I think it's a better link to share because the audience is more receptive and he performs the jokes differently. I might go see him though, cheers for the heads up.

That would have been QI with Stephen Fry :)
Trevor does some of his isiXhosa clicks and Fry sighs "You've seduced me!" and then follows it up "Not that you wanted to, I'm sure!"

    Funny stuff.

Didn't see that. I think I saw him on 8 Out Of Ten Cats. I've booked tickets to see him now anyway. Thanks for the heads up.

... the audience is more receptive and he performs the jokes differently.

I prefer his delivery on Letterman - but I think the adapted material in later shows was likely a response to Trevor's humour being completely lost on Letterman himself... although Letterman's unsmiling face might have been because Trevor took a pot-shot at the 'tribal African' intro they played at the start of his set, with his "Let me tell you some monkey jokes!" line a few minutes in.

South Africa has produced many stand up comedians over the years, but Trevor is the first one that I genuinely like, he's got great warmth.

When I was young as in 10 or so, my parents took me with them and friends to see ronnie Corbett. (This was whilst on holiday) He was brilliant. He even got that chair out at the end to give one of his famous stories to finish like the two Ronnie's.

I wonder if there is many of today's comedians who you could take a 10 yr old to and still everyone have a great night??? Not that many.

I have saw a fair few modern ones and to be honest I didn't thnk much of them. (Billy Connelly, frank skinner etc) ok but nothing to write home about.

Aziz Ansari can be quite funny. I also went through a phase of watching a lot of Omid Djalili - but draw the line after his stand up work... his movie 'The Infidel' wasn't as good as I wanted it to be.

The funniest Iranian in the world comes on at about 3:20 after John Cleese, and I love how he bats it at Prince Charles:
