Same sex marriage - how will it impact you?

Forget for a moment that it signifies the fall of civilisation, ignore the children and other peripherals for a sec.

You're opposed to the idea of two people, deeply in love, of the same sex getting hitched.

Don't be codding us with your civil union is enough bobbins.

Be honest - how would gay marriage affect you? How would it impact on your life. Nobody else's - your life. How would gay marriage change it

Honestly I couldn't give a toss what other people do.

I guess the only way would be a difficult calculation into how minutely it'd effect my bank account due to a potential increase in couples availing in the marriage related tax breaks. Reckon it'd cost me about 5c a year Joe.

Aside from that, not in the slightest

It won't effect me unless my wife tells me something I don't know :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,300 ✭✭✭✭razorblunt

It won't , it's just two people wanting to spend the rest of their lives together.

Plus no arguments over the ideal location for the toilet seat, lucky backstards.

It means my friends can marry, it means my cousin can marry, so for me it affects my wallet as I will have to fork out for wedding presents!

In seriousness though, the only marriage that will have any impact on my life will be my own. peoples sexuality is noones business but their own

I'm married for 24 years so I have a no sex marriage.

Not in the slightest...sure what harm, if two people love & have a commitment to each other, why should they be discriminated against over gender & not be allowed the same rights as a mixed gender union?

I couldn't give less of a crap what other people do if I tried. Anyone who gets het up about this topic seriously needs to find something else to be doing- I'm too busy to keep track of my own life, never mind someone else's.

Well, it'll allow my cousin, who's been going out with the same man for about 30 years to finally get married. They've always come to every family occasion together and are very much in love. The idea that they can't get married seems so bizarre and unfair to me.

I'll be flying home especially to vote in this referendum as it's something I feel very strongly about (and I know some feel I don't have the right to because I don't live there but ah well tongue.png).

I've got a good feeling it's going to go through though; the Irish are not the conservative backwards rednecks some media makes us out to be.

This sums it up for me.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

OP, where's your own opinion? I mean you did start the thread after all.

But anyway, no it wouldn't affect me. You would want to be some pompous self important príck, to try and get in the way of anyone's happiness imo.

It will affect me because I will live in a more equal society with better civil rights.

I believe people should be allowed to marry whomever they want.

    That includes:
    Same-sex
    Multiple-partners
    Family-relatives

But there are still too many close-minded bigots in this world...still, someday, I think people will be free to choose who they love, and who they want to marry.

That the state seeks to change on a fundamental level one of the basic blocks of a functional society. The institution of marriage is a one of honour that provides for the promotion of a public good, the generation of a stable, familial life that will continue on the population of the state - this effects all of us given the overall disruption of family in say the UK were inspite of the rhetoric and claims by politicians - social experimentation on the status of the family has lead to broken homes in record number .

The state, should this pass, will enforce this will the fanaticism of the NUI Galway in crushing discident opinions, and enforce this change to the social bargain on schools, institutions and private business who have no wish to be part of the experimentation on the new social bargain - an individual's conscience will no longer apply.

It means I will get to go to some flamboyant weddings with more choices on the menu than beef or salmon.

Either my sarcasm detector is failing or you are trying to make some lame implication that homosexuality is the same as incest.

That's exactly what you (or people like you) would have said about 'same-sex' marriage in 80s.

If number of people N are:
    Of age
    Willing

They should be able to get married. It is nobody's business but their own. Anything more than that is a law that takes away individual's rights because of how society feels. I think two dudes going at it is kinda weird. I wouldn't want to watch a video of it, that's for sure. But it's not about what *I* want to see, it's about two dudes and their right to get married, if they want. I don't have a smoking hot cousin, but why should there be a law that dictates who I can marry? Why is one form for discrimination okay, while others are not.

At different times and places, people have been forced to only marry within their race or even within their religion. It's ridiculous.

People should be able to marry people. As long as they are able to consent (old enough, mentally aware) and want to do it - they should be able to. Anything less is discrimination, plain and simple.

In my mind, it is exactly the same.

It is no business of mine what you do with your private parts - so long as it is done in private, among consenting adults. If you want to sleep with one dude or five dudes, or five chicks, or your cousin or five of your cousins, or a black guy or a white girl, or an amputee, or a Buddhist....

Whatever. That is your business, not mine. Laws against it are barbaric and close minded.

Apart from the possibility of being invited to a wedding or two it does not affect me at all!

That's like saying, 'You shouldn't abuse your children, if they have blue eyes'.

The distinction of eye colour is meaningless and unnecessary. Fighting for same-sex marriage is just as narrow-minded. The topic is exactly the same.

    Same-sex marriages won't affect ME.
    Polygamous marriages won't affect ME.
    Inter-racial marriages won't affect ME.
    Inter-religious marriages won't affect ME.
    Incestuous marriages wont' affect ME.

    I'm a dude, and I'm married to a chick. We're both white. We're not related. We're both non-religious.

Trampling over the rights of others because we find their choices to be 'icky' or 'against God' or 'against nature' is wrong, IMHO.

When will you stop beating your wife????

    Question as valid as yours

Won't affect me at all. I dont see the big deal. Religious types shouldn't care since it won't be a real marriage in their eyes anyways.

Why do married couples get tax breaks?

No, it's like saying "take your whataboutery elsewhere". Every thread about SSM people bring in incest and polygamy (and usually bestiality and paedophilia) to derail it; it'd be nice to have just one thread that was actually about the subject.
