Had 2 glasses of 8 degrees Russian Imperial Stout last night in The Headline. Absolutely lovely. Dangerous stuff given it's percentage!

Yeah, great beer. Bought a can in City Beer in San Francisco.

Had a glass myself, its very sweet and light, you'd never know it was a such a big ABV.

Tried the Stone Barrell Boom on draught too, amazingly it was as flat as the bottle!?!

Had a Founders breakfast stout earlier. By far the best of that genre that I've had. Superb beer.

Followed it up with a Porterhouse Brainblasta. I haven't had one of these for ages but my taste in beer has really changed. I find it a bit too malty.
My taste buds have have been destroyed by hoppy beers!

Just had 8 Degrees' Russian Imperial Stout, delicious. Very impressed.

Nogne GPA pretty bland beer. Nogne Kriek on the other hand, is a great sour beer.

Founders Breakfast Stout & Backwoods Bastard, Bear Republic Racer 5 & Hop Rod Rye, 8 Wired Saison Sauvin, Brewdog Hello My Name is Mette-Marit, Hitachino Nest Espresso Stout were all killer.

I'd say the Bear Republic beers would have a more pronounced hop profile if fresh, but for what I am used to drinking beers in Ireland, it's definitely hoppy enough.

Backwoods Bastard was the best of them all and one of the best beers I've had. Need to stock up. The BA stuff we get here is often so poor, like the leann follain one which is pure muck, or just mediocre. This is how you do it. Cheaper too.

I quite liked the barrel-aged leann follain.

Yeah many have liked it here. I can't deal with barrel aged beers unless the OG beer has a massive body, otherwise it will just taste like caramel and oak in a hugely cloying way. The best Irish one I've had has been the Porterhouse Celebration one - although I remember getting the cloying taste off that too once. Kindred Spirit wasn't that bad either!

I had Aztec Stout yesterday - I thought it was fine, but also could use a more full stout taste to back up the bold extra flavours - just like the cloying in those BA beers, this felt like there were two things going (stout, spices) on that didn't fully connect.
The Black IPA tasted pretty good, need to get a bottle/pint.
Looking forward to the Imperial Stout, but a bit worried because of the reports that it is "surprisingly light".

Where from? Drinkstore don't have the IPA's listed on their site.

They are on the shelf in the fridge is the uninteresting answer.

Racer 5 may well be my favourite beer in the world

Had their pale ale and IPA, wasn't overly impressed. I see large bottles of Arrogant Bastard around, I might give it a shot (at least for the big bottles if my home brewing plans take off).

Just got myself a bottle of Brooklyn Black Ops. It's damn expensive so I was humming and hawing about buying it but convinced myself it would be the perfect Christmas Day beer. Haven't tasted it before so I think I know what's the first thing that's going to be opened on Christmas morning.

Where did you get the black ops?
    Great beer.

Black ops is a great beer.

Ruination is savage. This one is super fresh too.

Yeah Ruination is great, just had one. I mean I'd probably go for Racer 5 nine times out of ten over this because this is like the dumb and dumber of hoppy beers but sometimes you just need some fart jokes.

Ended up at the Alltech Brew and Food convention press launch.
Drank a few beers, a few whiskeys and are a lot of cheese.

As far as press events go, it was pretty decent. The Alltech people are all really sound and I left with a goodie bag and 4 bottles of the bourbon aged ale.

Also ran into a few familiar faces from here.

    Great beer.

Galvins in Carrigaline, Cork. They've a much better selection there than you'd think when you first walk in, the guy who buys the beer must know his stuff.

Anyone know anything about Inishmacsaint beers?

What do they produce, are they available in Dublin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,347 ✭✭✭✭Grayditch

    Founders Porter.

I just need to check every now and again. Yep, still fantastic.

The Breakfast Stout is just delicious... its up there.

Just had a bottle, tasty as frack. Where'd you get the glass chief?

Had a black ops last year, hated it but i guess thats personal preference as i dont like whiskey. Very strong taste of it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,503 ✭✭✭adamski8

Had a zeus tonight. A bit too bitter. Not bad though. Being back amber ella!

So what is everyone thinking on irish beer of the year? Toss up between amber ella and foam and fury for me.

Had a backwoods bastard from founders the other night, picked it up without really looking at the label, damn was it strong, but plenty nice I thought.
