Has anyone ever had something unusual happen to them when they went to give blood?

It is simultaneously too late and too early for sensibilness :)

Blood letting used to be a way of getting high. These days they give you Mars bars and Taytos to counteract the process.

I was told I wasn't allowed because I was a high risk for CJD. That was disheartening.

When the big bosomed nurse did the iron test on me and she said 'just a little prick' I blurted out 'How the fcuk do you know?!!'

What is it about mars bars and taytos that un-high people? Or milk and cookies? Or tea and biscuits?

(And why is it never "milk and biscuits" or "cookies and tea"? )

Counteract the Vasovagal response (stopping fainting) and replenish blood sugar as compensation for that lost during donation.

Replaces the energy joules I think. It can be a shock to the system, it's like starving yourself for a day or two. A high without indulging in substances.

I'm a risk for it, but I don't have it :p but still, it means I don't get to donate blood, which is genuinely disheartening because I'd love to..not as disheartening as actually having CJD I'm sure

I think all people who lived in the north at the time of mad cow disease are unable to donate blood in the south?

A junior Doctor taking four attempts to find a vein in different locations.

Afaik if you lived in the UK during the eighties you're barred from giving blood.

I've tried twice but they can't find veins :(

New Years resolution: lose weight so veins become more visible so can give blood.

Are you sure your veins haven't collapsed from heroin abuse?

I never thought of the heroin abuse to be fair. Must say it to them the next time. I'm sure they would try harder to get heroin blood.

I have yet to meet a doctor/nurse who hasn't verbally proclaimed delight on seeing my exposed elbow.

I'm not particularly skinny I just have veiny arms. (and legs and most places with skin)

I have crap veins but my donations were really quick for some reason. I always end up jelly-legged afterwards so they told me to leave it a few years.

I'm anaemic now so no more donations for at least a year :(

always scared of needles and veins so never gave blood. after a week of being stuck for iv's and blood tests in hospital I got over it and had a look to see when the next blood donor thing was in carlow, then found out I can't donate for at least half a year as I had surgery.

    mildly irritated now

My wife nagged me into going to give blood with her. Her heamoglobin was low so she trotted off home without giving any, leaving me to stagger home by myself after donating.

I used to give blood until I started to get the pock marks (like I imagine junkies get) and the last tine I gave it my whole arm turned bruise yellow, I guess because as explained above. I may eventually man up again.

My blood clotted too quickly for them to get a full bag on the 3 occasions I tried and so gave it up as a bad job
