Has anyone ever had something unusual happen to them when they went to give blood?

It is simultaneously too late and too early for sensibilness :)

Blood letting used to be a way of getting high. These days they give you Mars bars and Taytos to counteract the process.

I was told I wasn't allowed because I was a high risk for CJD. That was disheartening.

When the big bosomed nurse did the iron test on me and she said 'just a little prick' I blurted out 'How the fcuk do you know?!!'

What is it about mars bars and taytos that un-high people? Or milk and cookies? Or tea and biscuits?

(And why is it never "milk and biscuits" or "cookies and tea"? )

Counteract the Vasovagal response (stopping fainting) and replenish blood sugar as compensation for that lost during donation.

Replaces the energy joules I think. It can be a shock to the system, it's like starving yourself for a day or two. A high without indulging in substances.

I'm a risk for it, but I don't have it :p but still, it means I don't get to donate blood, which is genuinely disheartening because I'd love to..not as disheartening as actually having CJD I'm sure

I think all people who lived in the north at the time of mad cow disease are unable to donate blood in the south?

A junior Doctor taking four attempts to find a vein in different locations.

Afaik if you lived in the UK during the eighties you're barred from giving blood.

I've tried twice but they can't find veins :(

New Years resolution: lose weight so veins become more visible so can give blood.

Are you sure your veins haven't collapsed from heroin abuse?

I never thought of the heroin abuse to be fair. Must say it to them the next time. I'm sure they would try harder to get heroin blood.

I have yet to meet a doctor/nurse who hasn't verbally proclaimed delight on seeing my exposed elbow.

I'm not particularly skinny I just have veiny arms. (and legs and most places with skin)

I have crap veins but my donations were really quick for some reason. I always end up jelly-legged afterwards so they told me to leave it a few years.

I'm anaemic now so no more donations for at least a year :(

always scared of needles and veins so never gave blood. after a week of being stuck for iv's and blood tests in hospital I got over it and had a look to see when the next blood donor thing was in carlow, then found out I can't donate for at least half a year as I had surgery.

    mildly irritated now

My wife nagged me into going to give blood with her. Her heamoglobin was low so she trotted off home without giving any, leaving me to stagger home by myself after donating.

I used to give blood until I started to get the pock marks (like I imagine junkies get) and the last tine I gave it my whole arm turned bruise yellow, I guess because as explained above. I may eventually man up again.

My blood clotted too quickly for them to get a full bag on the 3 occasions I tried and so gave it up as a bad job

My blood type is something like 1/1000.(abneg)
Last time I gave it I crashed into a wall.
    Don't bother much since.

Exact same happened me every time I tried. Eventually they told me to maybe try back again in a few years.

I was really sick and weak for days afterwards every time too, which wouldn't have bothered me if I knew it was for a good cause, but sure they just had to throw out the almost-full bag that they got each time. So it wasn't worth it!

I'll give it another go in a year or so (pregnant now so can't donate for twelve months after.)

Giving blood is one the easiest ways you can contribute to the community/society.
It takes at most an hour, and you will only have the actual IV in your arm for 10 minutes maximum.

Its such an important service for people, and just donating a small percentage of your blood will most likely save a life.

They do so many blood transfusions every week in this country, and it wouldnt be possible without all the donations people give voluntarily.

Anybody who has suffered from a serious injury or knows somebody who has will understand how important it is.
My grandfathers gall bladder ruptured after surgery, he collapsed after internal bleeding and losing a huge portion of his own blood. Thankfully he was given a blood transfusion and he was able to pull through.
    He would have died otherwise.

So I strongly advise you all to check when the next clinic is near you at http://www.giveblood.ie/

You can also see the current blood supply available to Irish hospitals http://www.giveblood.ie/Current_Blood_Supply/

Its a very safe and professional process done by trained people. The needle doesnt even hurt anymore than the flu-jab plus you get free biscuits/taytos, pens, keyrings and your own little blood donor card that tells what blood type you have.

Given the price of a packet of Tayto these it's worth it.

I've donated blood about 5 times, haven't donated in about 2 years. I'm gay, and if you have done some gay stuff you are barred from giving blood.

Wonder if I should just lie about it and let them take my blood? I don't have a fecking STD or AIDS.

Yeah, just think of it as blood with painkillers already added.

And you know this for sure yes ? It can take some time for HIV \ STIs to incubate and become detectable in a blood test so telling them lies about your personal life when it comes to blood donation is completely wrong and I'm sure theyd rather not have your blood if that was the case.

Last time I donated I decided not to grab a sambo or tea afterwards and made it all the way to Easons on O'Connell Street (the Dublin one :P) before fainting.

Dropped everything I was carrying and the friendly people around me helped pick it all up.

It was only after I left that I realised somebody had given me a €20 that I didn't own.

    ????

    Profit!!!

I give blood regularly as a O neg donor they love me!
I had to receive a transfusion after my 2nd daughter was born without that anonymous O Neg donor I'd be dead
Good enough reason to continue giving I think?

    Yes.

Assuming all gays are diseased is retarded.

Taking offence because if it is retarded.

Yeah, I also lived in the UK during the eighties, so cannot give blood either.

Shame, as I have one of the rarer blood types (B-) and I'd love to donate.
