They're both nice beers, but the Jacobite has the edge as far as I'm concerned. Spicy with a comforting alcohol warmth. Perfect for the weather that's in it at the moment.

Are they on special somewhere, or do you mean "on offer" as in "available"?

Yes sorry I meant available as I hadn't seen them before.

After years of searching during visits to the US, I finally managed to procure myself a pint of Russian River's Pliney the Elder; surprisingly during a short trip to Boulder, Colorado, rather than the more frequent trips to California.

So, did it live up to the hype? Nah. Fantastic beer. Really great. But could I pick it out in a blind taste test with a number of similar strength US-style IPAs (including of Foam and Fury?!). I fear not. Perhaps I just don't have a great palate, or am missing some vital taste receptors.

I think it has a distinctive enough taste, "juicy" is how I would describe it. I must get some to celebrate for when my son arrives shortly.
There are a few IPA's that stand out imho. Lagunita, racer 5 and Sculpin to me would be the more distinctive ones.
A blind taste test would be interesting.

Chimay Doree. At 4.8%, understandably tame for a Chimay, but ok if you're in the mood for a light Belgian.

Staropramen from a super bright spar fridge, putrid.

Day trip to Dublin tomorrow, hopefully get some of the DIPA in one of the bars. Anyone know if it's still around?

Meanwhile, I'm on the Weihenstephaner Dunkel, good stuff.

I'd say there's plenty of it still. Free Stone Barrel Boom IPA at 6pm in Brew Dock too.

Traquair House Ale - First thing I noticed after pouring was the head disappearing quite quickly. Also smelled a little sweet and a bit woody.
Taste of caramel and malt hits you straight away.
Its a very light beer and doesnt feel heavy at all.

Had this bottle at room temp. also as suggested on the label.

Was in The Mercantile last night, surprisingly enough they have O'Hara's Red, Pale and Stout, Galway Hooker and some of the Dungarvan range too. Also spotted Sierra Nevada in the fridge, along with some Polish lagers.

Myself, my sister and my BiL drank them out of Pale and Hooker though, lol.

It was my first beer of the night.

    Jesus, bland much?

This time last year I'd have pushed it aside for being "too hoppy", last night it was like a bleedin "Lite" Lager.

How my tastes have changed. I moved swiftly on to the pale.

My sister stayed on the Hooker though, and when that ran out she asked the barman to recommend an alternative.

I'll leave you all to guess what he recommended.

My tastes have changed vastly in a year.

Saying that, I thought going back to Dungarvan Coffee And Oatmeal stout would leave me disappointed, but no, it was delicious.

Smithwicks the barman's generic answer to anything that might have the word "ale" in it.

I hope Foam and Fury is gonna stay available for a while, not being able to try that has been the only real disadvantage of my dry season.

Anyone heading to the Stone Barrel Brewing Co. Launch night in Brew Dock tonight? Nearly finished a college assignment and thinking of rewarding myself later.

Im in the Brew dock now sippin a foam and fury. Apparently its gonna be a permanent beer. Dont think ill wait around til the stone barrel event later, mightnt survive that long. They have the "boom" beers in the fridge but arent selling them yet.

Lump Of Coal Dark Holiday Stout.

Produced and bottled by Ridgeway Brewing, Oxford, for Shelton Brothers Massachusetts.

It's alright. Not awful, but every other stout I've had this year is better.
