    "Garda station."
"Eh yeah, I'm online and it looks like one of the 7 billion people in the world has hung themselves."
"OK, can see if they're male or female?"
    "I'd guess male."
"OK so we're down to 3.5 billion. Race?"
"White. I think, I can't see the face so they may be East Asian."
"OK I'll patch in our stand-by investigator in Shanghai, he can follow what you say as well."
    "Okay..."
"Can you see any serial numbers on appliances?"
    "Eh..."
"Quickly! If we're to save this person who's apparently been hanging for an unknown amount of time somewhere in the world I need to get on to the customer care for an appliance manufacturer as quickly as possible!"

    etc.

Yeah, but you'd think that one dude would have realized that it maybe (just maybe) it wasn't the right time to start blatently fapping it...

    Then again, it is chatroulette...

I'm not sure which came first, but I know there was a quite famous example of this happening on IRC, if I remember right.

It was a guy by the name of Brandon Vedas, who went under the username of ripper. You can read about the death here.

Essentially it's that he logged on to an IRC chatroom back in 2003, where he was saying how hardcore he was with regards to drugs. He then went on to live-stream, which was discussed in IRC, with people goading him on to take more and more drugs, until he overdosed and died. It led to a huge debate as to whether those involved in the goading should have been arrested. For anyone interested, you can read the chat logs here, but be aware that it is quite harrowing to see what was progressing.

Was that the guy whose fiinal post was "i told u i was hardcore"?

Skipped through the first few mins. He's clearly distressed. The kid is clearly off his face on E or something. Look at that jaw move.

He must be the first person in history to feel suicidal whilst under the influence of ecstasy :pac: You're only meant to feel like that about 9 hours later ;)

Attention seeking bollocks. I swear it is an offshoot of the saturation of 15 minute fame we have had lately, regular people are just getting crazier for their 15 mins. All the recent ****e- people getting celebs names tattooed on their foreheads, teenage girls quite literally threatening to murder any female who has been within 10 ft of Bieber or the One Direction lads, stuff this extreme just was not happening five years ago.

The first time that I read this article, I couldn't help but think of how we watch and encourage men and women to beat each other in ultimate fighting games. We root for individuals who pound their fists and kick their feet at other humans. We roar when we see the blood or the teeth being knocked out.

Suicide is a tragic subject, but if we removed that element and focused on a guy dying in front of a camera, then it seems like an extension of the other spectator events that we consume.

gonna have to disagree here with this, I don't watch UFC to see someone die, I watch UFC to watch 2 people at peak physical performance battle each other with respect. There is no bullsh*t between them, fueds yes but huge respect too.

Yes people cheer when a solid blow is landed and yes you will see higlights of it over and over but its showing off the skill of the fighter that they are showing.

Do you also have the same feelings towards other physical sports? Rugby is hugely violent and the forces involved when 2 players collide are huge and we all cheer them on urging them to throw themselves into tackle after tackle and if they miss we boo and jeer.

By calling suicide a spectator sport you are making light of an extremily serious situation that affects millions of people in the most horrific way. This is not what this was. This was one person on a specific part of a website that wanted to be (as he says) an An Hero. He specifically looked for an audience to preform infront of and knew where to go, its happened in the past involving this site (and others) and looking at the history of it the majority of people that are watching them think its all part of a joke or prank. Its only after when they see its not that people realise what has gone on and you see a switch in the posts and feelings. Couple this with mob mentality a disconnect and the Bystander effect you realise that this is a perfect storm for a horror show.

If you are looking for something or an audience you are going to find them online there is no doubt about it. Heck if you want to have sex with someone with aids the Internet has you covered. This was the same.

Technically no - he did go on to say maybe one or two other stuff before going silent. You can read the logs in that post.

What is wrong with people thinking this is news?
Same shíte was happening 15 years ago only it was on IRC and mailing lists.

People were getting getting murdered or dying in car crashes 15 years ago as well, and its still news.

Or is this just some way of letting people know you're an elite internet hipster who's seen it all before

I really hope this was just attention seeking and not for real

These happen a few times every odd year where a person kills themselves in front of a crowd online.

Last one I remember hearing about in the news was of a young Swedish guy who hung himself in front of the webcam about 2 years ago. By the time the cops / paramedics came he was dead but the camera was still recording until one of them turned it off.

If the person wants an audience, they'll get it. Even if they're horrified at what they're watching and are helpless to do anything (Beside the obvious of logging out of the chatroom)

    .

I watch boxing for that (not to say there are not some repugnant characters in boxing like Fury, Haye or Chisora, but still)

Boxing is art. UFC is to sport what the Kardashians are to legitimate pop culture.

Seriously? I love the sweet science, but the sport certainly hasn't covered itself in glory in previous years!

How can you bring the UFC into a debate on suicide carried out online? It has no relevance!

In that case i don't think you understand the abilities and the techniques that the fighters have, the knowledge of the styles and reflexes you need to have in order to counter and counter that counter is immense.

Knowing when to adjust your weight to get that extra bit of leverage without leaving you open for a leg lock or an arm bar or knowing that you as a fighter are going against say a grappler and you having to adjuist your defence but keep your offence without comprimising both is exactly what you want to see in sport.

There was a movie out a while back called 'Untraceable' where a guy murders people live on the web.
The more people click on the link, the sooner he kills them.

Makes me think that if it existed today, it'd be on 4chan.

    Clueless.

I have boxed for years and I train in MMA now. MMA is the purest combat sport around and in comparison to boxing, nowhere near as dangerous. Yeah you see lads cut up in the UFC but I would much rather get cut than take 12 rounds of sustained shots to the head with the same force as a hammer, only covered by a glove.

MMA may look barbaric to those who know nothing about it, but its skill level far supersedes boxing. Boxing is one dimensional whereas MMA involves several facets of skill sets. You need to be not only able to attack and counteract but also negotiate the human chess that is grappling/wrestling/BJJ.

I'm sorry to have to make this comment on a thread about suicide but I really hate the Joe Duffy mentality to MMA.
