He named himself as Stephen & took pills with vodka before setting fire to his room & captured it live on camera.People were clamouring to witness the event with some actively encouraging him.
Firefighters managed to get to him and the reports are that a man is in hospital with "serious but not life threatening injuries".

What's wrong with people that they actually see this as a spectator sport?

What's wrong with people that put it on camera as if it's a show?
    attention seeking shíte.

Skipped through the first few mins. He's clearly distressed. The kid is clearly off his face on E or something. Look at that jaw move.

Only been on 4Chan once. It's a strange strange place.

OP did you watch the full 40mins?

Skipped through bits of it,fair enough if he's suicidal but the most disturbing aspect is that people encouraged him.

I just started to watch the video then decided not to i dont feel like having a disturbing image im my head for the day. How the hell do these things be allowed up on these websites?

I've been on 4chan before. It's the asshole of the internet. You do occasionally find something funny, but it's not worth wading through the filth, which can in some instances, be disturbing. I would expect no less from some people on 4chan to cheer on something like this.

Video isn't really disturbing, hard to make out what is going on, OP does appear to cut himself at one point and there might be blood, not really sure.

    Not the first time.

I know of a video where a guy hangs himself and dies all live on an internet stream with people telling him to do it. Eventually someone who was watching calls the cops and they arrive while the camera is still going.

    Very sad stuff.

I'm not sure which came first, but I know there was a quite famous example of this happening on IRC, if I remember right.

It was a guy by the name of Brandon Vedas, who went under the username of ripper. You can read about the death here.

Essentially it's that he logged on to an IRC chatroom back in 2003, where he was saying how hardcore he was with regards to drugs. He then went on to live-stream, which was discussed in IRC, with people goading him on to take more and more drugs, until he overdosed and died. It led to a huge debate as to whether those involved in the goading should have been arrested. For anyone interested, you can read the chat logs here, but be aware that it is quite harrowing to see what was progressing.

Encouraging someone to commit sucide and you can be done for murder.

Does anything ever happen the people on these sites?

Same shíte was happening 15 years ago only it was on IRC and mailing lists.

Well their motto is "like wading through sh*t for Diamonds"

This however isn't 4chan, its a section of 4chan. yes there is quite a large proportion of people that may be classed as odd/weird or downright disturbed but some of the boards are fairly normal.

I've been on 4chan for years, /v/(gaming), /g/(tech), /wg/ (wallpapers) and of couse /s/ are where i spend most of my time but there is so much more.

Its not 4chan thats at fault, its not the anonymity thats at fault. its a mix of the two but when this is mixed with the alienation that appears to show its head on the forums. When you mix this with the board /b/ bad things can happen.

/b/ though, thats were things get weird, Kid shoots up his school? There is a fairly high chance there was a post about it on /b/, but on the complete opposite side of the scale you have io7 makes your iphone waterproof that was /b/ too.

Some of the greatest memes, stories, photoshops and internet phenomenon’s have all come from /b/ but also some of the lowest parts of the internet have also come from there. Its gone downhill in a big way recently and the love to be an An Hero is what keeps the users going. Will their anonymity be remembered?

Internet Relay Chat, it's been around about 20 years now at least, like the granddaddy of Skype and MSN :D

    Internet Relay Chat.

Like a chatroom I guess but more powerful. It can allow sharing of files etc too and I think would be easier to set up and stay up than a web based chat room

    What's IRC?

Do you parents ever drone on about the good old days of the Beatles or Elvis until you want to drown them?

Well, it's like the internet chat version of that.

You usually hear it in the same sentence as Amp Test and Join Date.

When do older people see the beginning of the net? Like I still remember dial up and crappy CDs to try and install it - AOL? You mean you folk had it worse?!!

First chat room I was on was lycos I think! Good times pretty pervy stuff when I was a spotty teenager!

    No ageism intended, promise. :D

You know as well as I do if I omitted the link the very first reply to the op would have been "Link?"

People here can choose not to click it,but when he streamed it live there was a queue waiting to watch it as if it was a bit of craic instead of some messed up lad trying to kill himself.

Most people haven't a clue what IRC is. I'd be surprised if you genuinely believed they did.

And it's still news, even if it's been done before.

In a video of the incident, still available on LiveLeak (NSFW), the room fills up with smoke and Stephen apparently starts to burn.

“#imdead #omgimonfire,” he typed from under the bed.

    “I’m ****3d.”

Such a guy.. even able to retain enough composure to use hash-tags as he burned

If I was that disturbed by making a "spectator sport" out of such an issue, I just wouldn't bother starting a thread about it - links or no links.

Fair enough, post it and comment on it, if you so wish - but don't end your post denouncing the "spectator sport" element, when that is exactly what you are promoting, by posting it

The 'event' is over so technically we aren't spectators but merely watching & commenting on it after the fact. It's a bit different than sitting there watching it live & cheering him on.
By your logic, every time some tragedy appeared on the news we'd be better off switching channels.

My point was not about his attempted suicide as bad as it was but how people can sit there watching him do it & actively encourage him to be an hero.

I'm 26 and have, although it was back in my more computer obsessed nerdy days. I definitely wouldn't consider it mainstream whatsoever, I barely knew what I was doing on it

The first time that I read this article, I couldn't help but think of how we watch and encourage men and women to beat each other in ultimate fighting games. We root for individuals who pound their fists and kick their feet at other humans. We roar when we see the blood or the teeth being knocked out.

Suicide is a tragic subject, but if we removed that element and focused on a guy dying in front of a camera, then it seems like an extension of the other spectator events that we consume.

I don't, I sit quietly and watch. Can't stand those yobos getting over excited at a fight.

Deep down we all want to see blood and violence. 4chan's anonymity allows us to express our darker desires.
