I know a fair few of the indies floating around, and worked in some of the bigger named companies too.

I think the decline of arcades would be a great opener, it steps away from the clichéd 16bit wars and we can focus on the Irish impact.

    Good stuff :)

On the arcade thing, I've not been in to Quirkies in years. Is it still open and worth getting some footage to show how bad arcades are these days?
Anyone got any footage of arcades in Ireland in the 80's or 90's?

I've put in a request to the RTÉ Archives as I got footage from them before, but I'm not sure they would be willing to help out on this kind of show.
    Time will tell.

Quirkies aren't great but they're the only ones left putting in modern stuff so I think castigating them for doing so would be bad. I was in there last week to play Metallica pinball. Not a fan of the bands music but the table is amazing. Artwork is incredible. Looks just like an 80s/90s pin.

Decline of arcades is a tired concept as well. I'd rather see some positive coverage.

I've already contacted a few to see if there is any interest and received some positive responses from them. These are proper developers as well, not just some guy in his bedroom(not that there is anything wrong with that). A couple would like to meet and have a chat which is good and if that happens I'd be looking for one or two people to come along to those meetings with me(no cameras, just a chat with them). So far they are all Dublin based.

Would be up for coming along, and meeting up for a chat about this whole idea in general as well. I'm Dublin based as well so that suits me.

Agreed, if they let someone film in there it wouldn't be fair to use the footage to paint the place negatively. You could put a positive spin on it though & say this is the closest to the arcades of old these days etc.

Kinda agree with this. While it's certainly a topic worth doing, I think at tleast for the first episode it should be something with a wider appeal than arcades.

What about the whole retro and collector scene becoming more mainstream with more casual people collecting the older consoles and games?

Was in a pub called P. Mac's there last week and there was a mame machine there for play as well as various retro boardgames for play.

Could be one angle to take on it after talking about the initial downfall of the arcade etc.

I think talking about how collecting has become really mainstream would be a good topic and allow some of us to show off our collections, because from just browsing youtube hits I think that videos where someone is showing off a rare game etc gets a good few views and would be a good opener to get an audience

I'd be up for this as well , I'm in Dublin , and to be honest I'm changing careers and heading back to college with a view to going into development (specifically mobile gaming) so I'm going to have a bit of free time ..;)

Oh yeah possible topic ..Atari in Ireland (the tipp and limerick plants),a good chunk of europes atari cabs were made here ...as well as the VCS line (there was even an irish exclusive version of the 2600 jr)..iirc Namco (or its Namcot variant) bough the Tipp plant and made cabs here until the early nineties.
(Dell bought the limerick plant btw ...back when I worked for them the Atari Logo rock out near the entrance was still there..)

Now that would be interesting. Would be great if you could track down some of the folks involved and get them to interview.

May I also suggest you incorporate stealing the Atari stone logo thing into the show too? :pac: I have space for it in my garden...

The street fighter 2 cab i have is an Atari Nova and was made in Ireland originally before being shipped to germany then bought by a guy here and shipped back over.

I was looking into the Atari story for a radio thing recently, think a fair few of the higher-ups are in the UK and US now, but there might be someone I could get for an interview.

That's a mainstream one definitely, you'd get a fair few Irish people with no interest in games watching I think. I was even toying with the idea of making a doc about it for a while, but it was too expensive.

It's like a smashed up grave stone isn't it?

I'm surprised nobody has taken it yet.

(saying that, I've no idea of the scale, it's the same size as a car for all I know :D)

We're gonna have a hell of a time deciding on what to do for the first episode or two :)

Also, a couple more Irish gaming devs got back to me and are will to be interviewed about their gaming history etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,798 ✭✭✭Jack burton

Anyway we could put it to a vote?

Get the 6 topics down anyway, that way anyone interviewed can be really...pumped....:P for info on all subjects and avoid having to bring people back etc, just a thought

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭landsleaving

Yeah I suppose just throw out lots of topics and we'll pick 6 to go with and develop them a bit, then start seeing who could be involved.

Just read through your console manuals and pick some silly Japanese version of high performance implying English, check it isn't taken on Youtube, et voila. Just something a bit more obscure than Blast Processing. If I'd more stuff here to hand I'd have a look myself but there are hundreds of candidates in game manuals and console box art.

Just looking at arcade cabinet fliers for instance.

    Power Control System
    New Sound & Graphics
    Superb Action Scenario (my favourite)
    Hyper-Speed Excitement
    Maximum Playing Enjoyment

That's just a 10 minute browse. I'm noticing a huge proportion of these Japanese fliers have a preoccupation with hotness. http://flyers.arcade-museum.com/?page=thumbs&db=videodb&id=1323

At least it's not a preoccupation with dampness.

We can use this as our intro:

Yes, the full 2 minutes because nothing keeps people watching more than a overly long intro. :)
