The Arcade and Retro Doujin Show (We need a better name)

Might as well create a thread for this instead of completely spoiling landsleavings thread about his documentary.

    From the other thread:
If we could come up with some sort of plan for a series like this documentary(an episode around a game, a developer, a console etc etc) and try and keep the production values around the same level (which is very well done indeed). We would have the making of a very nice show that would appeal to quite a few people online(and elsewhere, who knows )

I'd love to push something like this, get some momentum behind it, but I think to do it right we would need quite a few people to get involved and support it.

We have the people already on this very forum who are knowledgeable in so many areas of the retro scene. Content and knowledge wouldn't be a problem.

So I suppose those who might be interested in helping out/starring/being a fluffer should leave a post below.

    So far those interested are:
    Steve SI
    landsleaving
    Jack burton
    Dr Bob
    keithgeo
    Retr0gamer
    Sparks43 (Head Repton advisor)
    o1s1n

We need more people to make this happen so if you want to help just post below.
The plan? There isn't one so any and all advice is welcome.

Is it going to be from the perspective of what it was like going to arcades and playing console games etc in Ireland? or we just talking about games in general, ie not specifically related to what it was like in ireland. Its just there are a load of shows out there already similar, where this could be targeted more towards an irish audience. Just wondering..

We could show that during the potato famine purchases of Rise of the Robots increased by 125%

I think targeting it towards an Irish audience is a good idea. But a larger viewing audience(as in outside Ireland) would be something to have as well. I'm sure we can come up with some format that would work.

'From an Irish perspective' is the one thing that hasnt been done, so definitely the main draw.

What that will materialize as, who knows. But there's most certainly an excellent group of all sorts posting here to get something going.

Will register my interest too. In what capacity, I havent a notion, but I have my uses.. I think :D

A lot of you guys appear to have very impressive collections so even a short web show showing off said collections and anecdotes about how/ where you secured certain games would be an entertaining watch, I think.

If ye had a nice splash screen/intro you could all do videos independently and do videos as a collective and not have it look too haphazard, assuming people who had **** cameras and microphones abstained. Just set some guidelines... I think under 6 minutes is a good one. The main ****up with retrogame videos is people assume you want to look at a guy with a neckbeard mumble to camera for 15 minutes. Heavy editing is almost always the better alternative.

Maybe you could film or document part of a beers night? The production values would remain high as before {landsleavings doc}, but at a beers setting it'd be a good opportunity to capture some of the buzz of the hobby, the meetups, the people, the collections {cidey!}, casual/competitive gaming on the night etc. You could intersperse the group recording with little individual interview segments like before etc?

Yeah, film it and edit it down and have it as part of an episode/show might be an idea.

I might like to take part, I certainly have a reasonable collection, consoles in situ with games to look at.
My location might be too far out though.

I'd be interested in taking part at a filming / editing capacity!

Nice idea. I'd be interested in helping out too, in whatever way I can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,906 ✭✭✭Steve X2

It's great to see people wanting to get involved.
Filming and editing is going to be a massive part of the whole thing. So having a few people to work together on that is going to be great.

One particular topic I'd like to visit would be how "retro gamers" who have children are introducing said children to the world of gaming. Lots of fancy new/recent consoles and games around, do your kids play retro? You get the idea. Possible an interesting story in there if done right.

Yep it's something I kinda deal with. The little fella I think looks at retro gaming as 'quaint', when viewed beside the mighty Xbox 360. I suppose though if I took myself back to the Snes days, I wouldn't have had much interest in previous gen stuff like the Atari either...so it's an avenue for a segment or two I'd imagine. Feck it, pencil me in for helping out too if I can...I know a certain kid who'd love to get involved & give his opinions of it too :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,183 ✭✭✭✭Atavan-Halen

I'm practically a child, so I could give my opinion :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭landsleaving

Just sent this off to Steve so may as well post it here too. We could base the topic on a short feature piece like the documentary - say about a cab collection or a specific console collection, then back to a studio setting (in somewhere like the Rage or the Thomas House) for a panel of maybe 3 people to chat about it.

I'd say that would need a host to keep everything moving along, with 2 guests who know a bit about the topic. Then it could be around 10-15 minutes total per episode, and a few could make the short feature bits in different parts of the country. It would only take one or two people with a camera and mic. Then the studio style bits I can bring lights and a pair of cameras to shoot - and would definitely need a hand with so any and all hands would be... eh... handy!

Any thoughts on that style? - volunteers to host? (would actually be up for that myself if someone else fancied taking the lead on the camera side - only if there are no other volunteers!)

    TL;DR - Prime Time meets A+R

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,183 ✭✭✭✭Atavan-Halen

    I wouldn't mind hosting tbh.

An expose of AvP on the Jaguar as a Doom ripoff and a sh1te game, then post the video on the Retrogamer forum, i'm sure there's those there who'd appreciate it.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,408 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

If you are stuck I could host, I'm just not sure I'd be the best candidate for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,906 ✭✭✭Steve X2

I think we will need to see how the whole thing shapes up and what the eventual format ends up being. Only then can we decide on having a host and then we can all discuss who might be best suited to that role(one person might be a better fit than another etc). I've no interest myself in hosting it.

The format of a studio/set/main location as an anchor to link to other documentary style pieces is probably the way to go and kind of how I visualise it. The location of the set/studio will a tough one to decide, and again we will need to discuss that as well. Maybe one of our regulars knows/owns/has access a good location? Not too sure about the RAGE as a location/partner, it might take away from the credibility of the whole "retro" thing seeing as they are not so well respected in these circles. I'm not bashing them, just stating how things are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,056 ✭✭✭Sparks43

I'd say alternate the host over the series so that we have the most informed people on the panel.

I know sod all about some of the more recent stuff so I would be willing to host one with preplanned questions

Yup, makes the most sense. It doesn't need to be the most informed, just someone who can jump in and stop people, throw out questions and keep things on track. We could probably have someone knowledgeable about each topic put some notes together for the host to use. Then the panel would have all the info.

But as Steve said, it's one for a bit further down the line.

What about for now we all throw out what we'd be up for doing, or interested in talking about on camera? I'm happy to show anyone who wants to learn how to set up the camera/lights, record audio or do a bit of research.

    I'm up for:
    Filming the documentary-style bits
    and the studio bits
    Editing
Recording sound/setting up lights and other general helping out.
    Research/planning for topics

    And can talk about:
    Dreamcast
    Game Boy
    PS1

There's probably a good few people on here like myself that would be willing to offer feedback and suggestions, that wouldn't need to go on the list as we wouldn't be a large part of it.

What medium do you plan to use for suggestions,
    would an A&R thread suffice?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,906 ✭✭✭Steve X2

I suppose my skills lie in the technical and organisation areas(so research and planning would be my cup of tea along with organising people and funds management should it come to that). I know my retro, but others here put me to shame in that department. But maybe if we should touch on the 3DO or Amiga I might have some views or information.
I've a bit of hardware modding skills and info but Myrddin is the go to guy for that sort of talk. Not sure if we would talk about mods and hacks but it might come up as some of them are pretty cool and not just for pirating.

I'll be off to Japan a couple of times over the next 4-5 months(although I hope we have something before then :)) so maybe I can get some arcade footage and see about talking to people in some of the shops in Akihabara for a segment or something.

Not sure how Pyongtaku is fixed these days, quite a bit of shmuppy info and knowledge in his head :)

I also have a server farm of 15 machines for any video/graphics rendering jobs required (currently setup for After Effects CS6).

I suppose at this early stage(with a realistic chance of it fading away into nothing as can happen with these things) this thread is the main area. PM's as well if you don't want to post in the thread.

I'd like to be involved in some shape but I dunno what I could offer, my collection has been ravaged in the last year and will continue to be in the future and I wouldn't be near as knowledgeable as most on here.
If ye need anyone to talk about paganism and Christianity in late antiquity or Ireland in the Atlantic world, I'm your man.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,790 ✭✭✭Jack burton

Well I'm up for it anyway

Only problem is that I'm down the country so me getting up to Dublin or people coming to me would require me a bit of notice. No problem going on the camera for any reason though, although my bogger accent might put people off. But if "Bits" was ok with people listening to me then I'd say I could be ok

I'm mostly informed about Mega Drive stuff so I guess that's my expertise but I'll talk about anything

Could be interesting if I took someone out around Tramore for a look at the arcades there for a segment

I'll do any kind of graphic design required aswell

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 5,393 Mod ✭✭✭✭Optimus Prime

I was in Tramore only two weeks ago, not much arcade games left, unless i missed some!

I'm happy to host as well (look between the retrounlim.com stuff and 'lets get retro' I've done a lot of hosting/commenting/interviewing/guestwrangling already), would be definitely interested in learning about the backend (lighting cameras sound) stuff too.

Well, lots of options for hosts. Now we just need to get the show together :)

Apart from getting footage of a beers, you could also plug the podcasts & this forum too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭landsleaving

    Shameless plugs all round!

Maybe we could start throwing out a few ideas for topics. We could try doing six episodes on a topic each. That should be fairly achievable I think.
