Nobody on games said anything, so I'll ask here if these are worth buying?

Somewhat relevant - I had Turtle Beach X11's

They were great for gaming, but I really didn't like them for music or watching movies / seires

This totally doesnt matter but just for my own curiosity:

2x4GB sticks of DDR2. Both known good. Motherboard that supports 8GB, 2 DIMMS. Will detect and run on both sticks independently but together it only ever detects one. Bios see's 4GB installed and 4GB useable. Bios updated so its not that.

Could it be that the sticks are double sided? I know some boards can only handle single sided but it sees one properly so is that still applicable?

Just realized I never checked DIMM_2 only, its possible its a dead slot. Wont be able to test that till next week. Any other suggestions?

Start with basic steps - like testing each slot and module individually, there is no point in compatibility witch hunt before you've done that, tbh.

Might get a second one of these. I have a 7950 so I'd have to go with HDMI to one monitor and DVI to the other.

Guys, I am looking for a splitter to send video signal to another PC with a capture card.

Here's the problem I am facing: Monitor will be using Dual DVI and all reasonably priced capture cards only do HDMI, which is not enough for 1440p currently. Would splitter downscale or not work at all? Not sure if DVI-DL to HDMI adapter will work either.

Are there any good external USB HDDs that are highly recommended? It'll be for a MBP if that makes any difference, thanks :D

I picked up one of these in the last few months and I would recommend it. It's USB powered and USB3, small and quite. I have the 500GB model for about a year now and it's never given me any trouble. Delivery is free, and if you look about you might get a money off code. I did.

Thank you! Looks good enough to me!

I have a 5/6 ish year old laptop where the HDD is on the way out.

I'm thinking about replacing it with an SSD and cloning across.

What's the least worth spending that I get the improved performance of an SSD and the ability down the line to use it elsewhere?

Storage isn't really an issue, don't have films or great amounts of data on the laptop. However I don't want to spend too much in case something else on it craps out in the near future.

There are 64gb Crucial ones but it doesn't offer that much flexibility. Is a 120gb Samsung 840 Evo basic the best balance of value/flexibility?

    Ta.

So my computer wasn't working all morning.

Eventually I figured out that my HDD seems to have died.

That's the 2nd WD Caviar Green 2.5TB that's died on me in the last year.

That seems ridiculous. I've never had any trouble with hard drives before. Is it something I'm doing or did I just have bad luck with 2 ****ty HDDs. Or are WD generally unreliable?

I've had an old 10k rpm drive from them and it's lasted without a peep for over 4 years.

Generally, the size and price will be up to you, you WILL get what you pay for. While some SSDs will provide nice 520MBps on benchmarks, it really depends on your laptop wether it will support those speeds. A SATA 2 will probably cap it around 300MBps anyway. This is not necessary bad thing, it just means, you dont need the most powerful SSD out there.
On a Cloning side of stuff, whether it will work or not kinda depends on size of your current HDD. You can however play around with partition sizes and clone zilla images if HDD is larger than target SSD.

Lads, anyone used anything like this?

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/JUSTOP-Media-Player-1080P-Surround/dp/B006S6F44W/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1385832194&sr=8-3&keywords=media+player

I got my old PC in bedroom, but I only use it to watch some movies now and then or Netflix. After getting PS4 my PS3 might be going to bedroom so Netflix is sorted. though PS3 is always iffy about playing media files. If I could get yoke like that and connect mine 120gb SSD external Hdd, then I would be sorted perfectly.

Then I could lend my PC to buddy to play some PC games. He is strugling as it is with a newborn and misses not working.

Well fixed my PC. It doesn't crash anymore, basically took everything out and dusted and then put back in, even did some cable management and finally put on the blasted I/O shield (after two years)

Not something as compact as that but I have a media drive hooked up to the TV with some hard drives hooked up to it too.

    http://www.peats.com/specials/iomega_director.html

Have all my movies and tv series on it. Great thing to have. Also have it hooked up to the network so I can transfer files on my main computer over onto that so I can watch them on the big screen.

Anyone spotted any Cyber Monday deals on 60GB SSDs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,100 ✭✭✭brianblaze

I've ordered a 240GB SSD, 8GB more RAM, a new mouse and a sound card for the PC... I knew I'd do this! It'll be a monster in no time!

ON a different note, my motorbike was stolen this weekend... Fun times!

Looking to get either a laptop or tablet as I'm more than likely moving due to work and a desktop isn't an option at the moment. I've a seller lined up for my rig (sad to see it go). I'm looking for something in the €350-€400 region. Parents keep harping on about the tablet they got in Tesco. Damn thing starts stuttering while loading anything above 480p. I'm looking for something that I'll be able to watch videos in 1080p and something that's moderately fast. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If it's just browsing you're looking for you can't go too far wrong with an Acer C720 Chromebook - As long as you know what you're signing yourself up for :)

Great Value at less than £200...

For christmas, my parents are wondering if there's anything I want - I was going to get a 280x, but I figure that since they'll be buying me a gift anyway, would it be dumb to get them to get me a 270x, and then buy a 2nd myself for crossfire? Should've got them to get me the 8320 I bought recently, wasn't thinking.

    Limited to 720p, though.

True, but it's also an 11.6" screen. 720p is fine imo.

Fuel line on the bike had big problems... I'm hoping they use it in some form of crime and it craps out and decides to eliminate itself... It nearly did it to me last weekend!

again only 720p but a Asus t100 maybe worth a look. With it being full windows it will do everything (just not extremely fast)

    So with Vista Ultimate
    a core 2 6600 @ 2.4 GHz
    4gb of ram
    Nvidia GeForce 7300 LE

Can I throw a 7770 or maybe even a 7870 in there? How much of a bottle neck would the CPU be? I want to play games like mount and blade and others that would be a few years old but the current setup is struggling. Is the ram a problme too? Seems to be a big issue when playing minecraft. I only have a 1440 x 900 monitor, so...?

    Thoughts please

    Was thinking of getting this

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005MNGQ6C/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d0_i3?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_r=0K48BFD8WMM9YTHZQSBT&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=430257247&pf_rd_i=468294

Just wondering before I pulled the trigger, is there any similar items I should throw my eye on?

    Thanks!

Depends on the PSU you got also, 7770 wouldn't be bad in that. Can you overclock too?

You could go for an AMD 7750 if you have a weak PSU. 7750 is still a good card and more than enough for the games you're looking to play.

Have a brand new Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler sitting here, I'm not sure whether to use it in my build or try and recoup what I paid for it and go for a H100i !

    Anyone have any suggestions?

That will probably match the performance of a closed loop cooler like the h100i for the most part and will have less issues (no chance of an air cooler breaking, no issues with water etc).

    What CPU do you have?
