What would you think of the creation of human-ape hybrids?

This is a topic I'm somewhat interested in, animals which are less similar than humans and chimpanzees can be crossed, some of them which occur in the wild or are as simple as putting two parents together in captivity and letting it happen. So, it's got me thinking, a human/chimp hybrid could be a possibility, either via natural methods or by genetic engineering, though, I can see why this would be seen as unethical and is unlikely to happen, but what do you think?

Might be an improvement, though it may depend on which ape and which human get hitched.

EDIT: forget chimpanzees, they're far too violent. Go for the bonobo.

They are not close enough to breed naturally. I'm sure that, er, experiment has been done plenty of times.

It's probably possible to interchange some genes. Can't think of any reason - for the craic wouldn't be acceptable.

One of the reasons could be just so it's done, over the course of history humans have done a lot of science which amounted to nothing. It could also be used to advance medical research as many animals which are much less similar to humans, and likely chimpanzees have been before.

For instance, sometimes pig or cow heart valves are modified and used as replacement heart valves for humans who need replacement heart valves, a human-ape hybrid could almost undoubtedly provide better replacements than a pig or a cow. And that's only one example, I'm sure someone who knows more about medical research could give you a million reasons.

How would you cope with the ethics of that. Assuming you could make it work and got a hybrid. How would you feel about rearing it to harvest organs. Made worse if it's intelligence was made higher.

Waste of time anyway. The use of using pig and cow valves for humans is old-medical technology. It's like how insulin used to be extracted from pig pancreases before recombinant DNA technology. Those valves, among other organs are being grown synthetically and will become mainstream. Better to pour your money into that than waste it on this project that would be a complete waste of time.

Better yet, invest in regenerative medicine actually.

That's so strange. There's an amino acid difference between porcine and human insulin, 3 between bovine and human insulin. It can cause immunogenicity. You'd be better off staying with recombinant human insulin.

That's a method to deliver the insulin differently. Our insulin fluctuates as needed when we eat, but if you're diabetic that same effect would require multiple injects, and even then the efficiency wouldn't be spot on, so you've things like this which is a long-acting analogue that maintains a sort of base level of insulin in the system, so you won't get high and low peaks, but you won't need multiple injects before every meal.

There's loads of modifications like that but the core is human insulin so it won't trigger an immune response.

The question is would any such chimera prosper in the long run? The chimpanzee genes would become more branier, the human genes would become more strongerer - it's better for everyone.

In practical terms the more human-like beings could help the more chimpanzee-like beings cultivate peanuts and bananas and the more chimpanzee-like beings could help the more human-like beings change lightbulbs with out needing to stand on chairs.
