Ive had many an occassion where ive had a sierra nevada and its amazing on one occassion only to be not so fantastic the next time. Sierra comes a long way and may have a freshness issue from time to time. Only thing i can think of to explain the great to not so great tastes.

yeah, I've brought growlers of it home with me instead of buying bottles of it

Not knocking the bottles but its on tap that Dark Arts really does it for me.

Must think about getting myself a Growler!

Green Flash Imperial IPA. Seriously tasty beer and pretty much close to perfection for the style, and just in general tbh! :D

Have this badboy to keep me company tonight.

Popped into Mchuges with the intention of buying two bottles of Leann Follain to sip while watching MOTD and saw this, asked how much it is, owner said it's €13.99 but seeing as it's the last bottle you can have it for a tenner.

    Happy days.

Be interested to see what you think of it. I've always considered getting a bottle but passed on it.

A friend of mine from the Bay Area recommend it to me about 2 years ago, looking forward to trying it myself. Have it sitting on the door step for while to cool down (came off the shelf and was quite warm).

The missus gave me a present of two Black Balls.

I could attempt to word that better, but I have my favourite porter to be drinking.

Could be worse, she could be giving you blue balls.

Just as well you called yourself up on that one! ;)

Finally cracked open the bottle of the BBP Trinity that I've had there for a while. I'm no expert on Belgian styles but I really like this. Kinda sweet and sour like an apple, so quite like a good cider in that sense.

I had a good moan last year about Irish brewers (I know, I know) not having enough variety style wise, but in the last year they've come on leaps and bounds. Long may it last!

The smoked Alaskan is a gorgeous beer. Was the first smokey porter I tried and was amiss that I'd never discovered this wonderful style before. Tried a dozen smokeys after expecting I'd find at least one close to it. Nope. Its in a league of its own. Delicious.

    Ok, the Alaskan Smoked Porter.
I'm not really a smoked beer lover, I've never really hated them or anything but I always find the smokiness overpowers it all and you end up with a weird "bacon"y taste, or in the case of Metalman's Smokescreen, kippers. So I approached this with that in mind, and I've been pleasantly surprised.

First thing you get is that kind of semi-sweet burnt nose from the wood, kinda smells like burnt sugar and wood, reminds me of when you burn a sugary glaze on a lumpwood fired grill, but less burnt smelling.

Next the taste. The first thing you get, again, is that woody smoke, and again it's followed by sweetness. I'd describe it as sort of like a very dark sugar, like a muscavado or something, with a little dark fruit, blackberries and figs specifically, in it maybe a little licorice, then the hops kkick in with a little bitterness to take the edge off and you also notice the roasty-bitterness of the over roasted barley and the smokey is there, all the way though, carrying all the flavours and helping them meld into something really, really decent. It's incredibly complex.

It's not extremely heavy body wise, which I was surprised about, but it's definitely not light either, medium-heavy, extremely smooth mouth feel and that prickly carbonation that's present in all good American Porters helps everything dance around your tongue. Far more drinkable than I was expecting.

It's a solid 9.5 out of 10 for me, maybe even higher.

Definitely the best smoked beer I've ever had, that said, I haven't had a whole lot of them!

I liked that Alaskan Smoked Porter a lot. I'd have liked it even better for a tenner.

Crikey. That costs more per bottle than Bourbon County, Westvleteren 12 or even a litre of Fran Well Jameson Stout. Is it worth it?

In fairness it's a 22oz (651ml) bottle, so you get a lot more (roughly twice as much).

Ah, I hadn't spotted that. :) I retract my question!

Well worth trying if you can grab one.

Yep, this Black Ball is definitely my favourite porter, with Anchor porter a close second.
