The lads on Second Captains discussed this issue with Scottish journalist Alex Massie from The Spectator. Worth a listen.

Who is talking about songs? The matter at hand is quite clearly a banner.

Do you even think before you post or are you too preoccupied with pandering to a certain group on here?

You do realise one of the main issues the banners were highlighting was the fact Celtic fans have been banned from singing Roll of Honour

Seems like you need to know what your talking about before you post!

It's not just songs that are the issue here, and the current discussion is regarding an investigation into a banner, not a song.

It's the criminalisation of Irish culture and history in Scotland, it's the same issue.

Pretty sure the GB said Saturdays banner was about remembering Pira Volunteers first and foremost. Sorry but if that is the case it is wrong IMO

Did anyone listen to the podcast I linked to?

The Scottish journalist, Alex Massie, that they interviewed said - in his opinion - that the "Offensive Behaviour at Football Act" is an overreaction to songs like "The Roll of Honour" or "The Sash" being sung at football matches, and only serves to make a bigger issue out of it. I tend to agree with him.

Saw that as well:pac:. Very warped mindset, not representative of the majority of Rangers fans I would say. The guy in the England shirt said if Scotland voted for Independence he would go to Wales because England is full of immigrants, hilarious.

Funkin' embarrassing it is, but for me part of a bigger issue within Glasgow and Scotland, where certain perceptions and stereotypes are used all too easily to group all football supporters into those brackets creating a never ending circle of division and detracting from the social issues shared by the majority on both sides.

Of course, there's also those who aim for, and romanticise those stereotypes....

It's today's podcast. The interview with Alex Massie is about 2/3rds into the 1 hour soccer section.

Think that Massie will find that the sash is not on the offensive songs list it is judged to be of the same ilk as the Fields of Athenry and as much as I hate the song it is a totally different thing than Roll of Honour

What makes The Sash or The Fields of Athenry different from Roll of Honour? Time passed?

It's certainly one of the things let's face it there's many people still alive that suffered losses and possibly injuries at the hands of the people the song is about. You could say it is to fresh in many peoples minds

Many people still alive suffered at the hands of the British forces that are celebrated every November for a month on TV, in football stadiums and other places.

It's impossible to draw a line on things like that, without being arbitrary or capriscious as that journalist on the podcast put it.

Maybe so but these people are remembering there dead in there own country.
The simple fact is it is a song about members of proscribed organisations it is illegal under the law of the land to show any form of support it is also in the rules of the SFA / SPFL to show support in words etc of proscribed organisations under the Terrorism Act

SPFL regulations say action can be taken if a person present at a match uses "words or conduct or displaying any writing or other thing which indicates support for, or affiliation to, or celebration of, or opposition to an organisation or group proscribed in terms of the Terrorism Act

Celtic fans won't bend the knee to this sectarian bigoted law, just like Celtic didn't bend the knee to the apartheid state that the six counties was during the troubles, croppies won't lie down

Yes we know that and we know it's a load of nonsense, that's why there is continuing to be tedious boring arguments around these issues.

On the one hand we have this indulgence in an annual poppyfest for a month - if it was a one day event there would be little or no objections to it - which seems to be getting bigger every year. Then at Ibrox a few months ago we have the spectacle of British armed forces servicemen parading around on the pitch while the crowd chants fck Bobby Sands and other things besides and they pose for photos with UVF banners. In contrast to this there is a zero tolerance approach to a few fans singing a song about IRA men who died on hunger strike 21 years ago. There is nothing sectarian about the Roll of Honour song, it's a commemorative song about volunteers who were members of an organisation - The PIRA - that is no longer active.

Like I said before I tend to agree with the viewpoint of the journalist Alex Massie, that bringing in laws like the Offensive Behaviour at Football Act", is a complete overreaction, doesn't appear to be even handed and makes a bigger deal out of it and excacerbates the issues. Any chance that there might be a bit of maturity applied around these matters some time soon?

I wonder how RFC fans,of whom there is still a large amount of Scotland fans would react if they were playing England and the English fans started cursing William Wallace.
