My one was sent away today due to a dodgy top speakers (I think it was blown). Anyway my question is will it be repaired or replaced? They have emailed saying they repair hpones and dont replace them but on this thread and others online, that doesn't seem to be the case. It seems like they replace the majority of phones sent into them???

Recently sent my phone back and just got it repaired , doubt they will just replace phones without trying to fix them.

Friend had the same problem, speaker started buzzing after about a week. He got a brand new phone but I think that's because it was within the 28 day window after starting a new contract, just brought it into Meteor and they gave him a new one.

Hi, I am due an upgrade in the next couple of weeks. I currently have a One X and was going to get a One on upgrade.
However, a new HTC One (M8) is due to be released early next year
I am trying to figure out would I be better off to wait for the new phone to arrive and hopefully will have no problems (my OneX has the wifi issue) or just go with a current One?

That would be up to you really, you're likely talking around March or April at the earliest for the M8. If you can wait that long then I'd recommend waiting, might as well get the newer phone IMO. If not then the One is still a great phone and I'd recommend it to anyone.

If you don't mind waiting, you could pick up a Moto G in the meantime? Then sell it on or give it to someone once the M8 comes out.

    Tough call.

From what I've seen of the specs of the M8 (and I realise the specs in the wild right now may not be correct), it doesn't look like a massive update. The screen is slightly bigger, better processor, and the camera hardware looks the same.

Comes down to what you can afford.

If it was me, I'd probably go for the One right now on something like a 12 month contract, then get the M8 next autumn if it's really that much better. The price will have come down a bit by then too.

I'd be very hesitant to take out a 24 month contract right now on a phone that will be one year old in March. If it were me I'd wait or get a 12 month contract also. You could also look at newly available phones as an alternative, Nexus 5, Xperia Z1, LG G2 etc, all with cutting edge hardware...

Cheers for the replies. TBH at the moment I could not afford to buy a phone on a 12 month contract, approx €450 with three.

Well, if the leaked specs are correct, then I don't think the M8 will be that much "better" then the One. I've had my One for a couple of months, and it's fantastic (much better in a lot of ways than the S3 I had before it), and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a phone right now.

It all depends on how precious you are about having the very latest tech. But you have to balance that against your needs right now. I used to be in the "wait until the next version comes out" camp, but you'd get caught up in that, and if you stuck to that way of thinking you'd never get a phone.

As a general rule, I'd be with the poster above that said stay away from 24 month contracts....they might suit some, but I just think it's too long.

If you really HAVE to have a new phone right now, then go for the One on an 18 month contract. You won't regret it, it's a fine handset.

I have to admit my battery has been ****e since last week...

Been surfing net on network signal since taking phone off charge this afternoon. Battery usage shows after 2hrs 40mins I'm.now at 3% battery. This can't be normal can it?

You'd get a new one SIM free for €600, a nearly new for for €500. Contracting for 12 months at €450 would be bonkers.

There's always something new just around the corner.
I think phone hardware has reached the point where you're not going to notice any big difference in specs any more. I've had the One since the day it came out and its still as snappy as the day I got it.
I would do what I did last year with the S3 and Note 2. Buy a second hand One for about €350, then you will be able to sell for about the same price when the new version comes out.

Yes, if you have bad signal.

If you have good signal, then no.....you need to figure what is causing the drain.

I just got my One on Sunday and I am debating what to do about upgrading it.
I have heard some bad things about the 4.3 5.5 update so I am paranoid about updating to that.
Also, has anyone converted to GPE and thought it was any better?
One big disadvantage to GPE is losing all of the nice little Sense features!

What bad things have you heard? Been running custom 4.3 5.5 ROM for quite a while, no issues.

Am just about to flash 4.4 kit Kat GPE ROM. I know I will miss a lot from sense, bit still want to check it out.

Custom ROM might be a better idea than just updating to the OTA Vodafone ROM.
A lot of people were complaining about crap battery life after the update on this thread a couple of pages back.

I've seen a few people here not happy with battery since the update but I've noticed no difference.

Doesn't the GPE keep a couple of One features or am I dreaming that? I thought things that were hardware related like the camera stayed much the same in the GPE? I could be way off though.

I've also seen people saying Sense 5.5 is noticeably more laggy too, but perhaps these people just have really heavy apps running.

Anyone notice any performance impact? Or is it still exactly as snappy as it was before the update?

Hoping to find some decent review of 4.4 on the One on YouTube later to get a better idea of it!

Ive literally noticed no difference. And impact on battery is from apps i have running myself such as fotmob, and Vine runs some sneaky services in the background.

    Phones the same.

I'll admit my battery isn't quite as strong, but I'm still getting far better battery life than my colleagues do at work with various other phones.

As for lag, frankly I don't buy it, or they are really really picky about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,489 ✭✭✭Ivefoundgod

Definitely not any laggier for me anyway. The improvements in BlinkFeed are worthe the upgrade alone in my opinion but I know I'm one of the few who love Blinkfeed.

One GPE has way way better battery (in my opinion, and a work colleague's too). But you do lose sense shininess, so be aware of that (I use nova, so less of an issue).

If anything I have noticed that 4.3/sense 5.5 is even snappier than it was before. Haven't noticed any difference in battery life either

Makes no difference unless an app is actually using it. It's passive radio (listen only) unlike wifi for example.

Ok so I sent my One away for repair on Monday. Got a message today saying "Your device has been sent to a 3rd party service hub". Has anyone any experience with this or can ye explain it? I'm fairly lost without my phone... I need it back as soon as possible so hopefully this doesn't mean I'll be without it for a long time!

Regarding battery life, I updated to android 4.3 and have to say my battery life has actually improved. Usually my phone is off the charger @ 07:30am every morning, and before the update I would only have 30% or less charge left by 6pm or 7pm. Now with 4.3 & sense 5.5 come 7pm I could have between 50% & 60% charge.

Not using the phone any different since I updated, maybe the update cleared some battery sapping processes or something but so far so good ....

I turned off all the 'Location' settings and now seeing really good battery life - last charge still had 20% after two days of light use.
