You can comment on his posts if you have mutual friends.

He is so right-on it's actually embarrassing.

Yeah a self-appointed guardian of the opressed.

Actually doing a spot of very public "likes farming" for that crappy video he made.

It's all to big himself up.

He does some PR work for Pavee Point too. Heard him on the radio before. Spends his time getting offended on behalf of others. People like him live in a world of rigid dogma which means that anyone who fails to met their standards of obsequious delight at the mere presence and activities of non-nationals is obviously a full-blown racist who must be immediately silenced.

Said in a thread in which people have defended the use of the term 'Paki'. Yes, the problem is clearly his worldview

No doubt he carries a few deep-seated prejudices himself that he's never admit to..this crusade is his way of denying his faults to himself.

Man: What did you say to me Paddy
You: Nothing, just returning a greeting
Man: Really and what do you mean by that
You: Nothing, except isn't this a wonderful sunset
Man: Yeah but, what do you mean by except?
You: Ah chist I don't kmow, it's called creating conversation
Man: so then you know a couple of darkies, ****, and paki's folk, I always loved when they came into town, them sorts where nice to me.

Would you use that term to your East Asian friends or colleagues?

Maybe go back to your geography books and establish that pakistan is not in east Asia.

Seing as we're all asking questions of each other...would you call somebody a racist or a bigot to thier face?

I mean when all you're allegedly african girlfreinds were allegedly being showered with racist abuse, did you man up and defend them?

You should also have been banned IMO...for your tiresome repetitiveness, insulting people and dragging every thread you're involved in off-topic.

Here's where you make the slur against East Asian folks.

Is that so? I was born in 1971...i've heard the term chinky used hundreds of times and at no stage was it a racist slur..it was a slang reference to a chinese takeaway.

I'd imagine that in real life you're a crashing bore, constantly pointing out allegedly offensive things and correcting people....the life and soul of every party.

Here's where I ask my question

I'd rather being infinitely boring than an apologist for racism.

    And again

Funny that. I find that those who are repeatedly told that something is offensive, that there is more to it than just a word, that it does cause hurt and grief - and then those people try and justify using it and sure, hasn't it always been used - those people seem to be of unhealthy and unsound mind to me.

For the record, most people aren't consumed by xenephobia and bigotry but threads like these seem to bring the exceptions to the rule out of the woodwork.

    I wonder why this is?

Oh and btw, you still haven't answered my question.

Would you use that term to your East Asian friends or colleagues?

Would I call someone a racist to their face? Er, yes. Do you think this is all hot air?

Do you want their names and phone numbers or something? Why is it so unthinkable for you to consider the possibilities of mixed relationships? How odd...

LOL, "man up". What's that supposed to mean? Are you admitting racism does cause offence and should be tackled?

I'm sure you can petition for me to be banned, chopper6.

I'm calling people out on defending racist slurs, sorry it doesn't sit well with your views.

As for dragging threads off topic, which threads? How? What has this got to do with this topic? Have you read in your short time here all the threads I've ever posted?

What i'm saying is that you're full of hot air...you're trying to come across as a liberal yet you seem to be behaving in a very strange, facistic way...following people around various threads and throwing wild accuastions around.

The moral highground you've taken seems to hinge on your alleged relationship with a japanese woman...a people who were noted for thier barbaric human rights record during numerous conflicts,a waging of various wars of agression and the worst treatment of POWs anywhere in the world.

You dont know anything about actual racism, you wouldnt stand up to an actual racist but you think nothinng of misinterpreting people's posts to shoehorn your agenda into your posts.

I cant figure out if you're trollingt or if you genuinely have some sort of esteem issue...either way, you're going on "ignore" and i wont be engaging with you or your nonsense again.

Chopper, excuse me for not trawling through your posts again, but did you or did you not try to say that 'chinky' is an acceptable term for a Chinese take-away?

Nah...i said it was used as a term for a cinese takeaway without any racist connotations. I dont use the term myself but i dont get twisted knickers if i hear it either.

Following people around threads? Really? That old chestnut? Bit of a wild accusation there, chopper.

Again with the alleged comment, what on earth are you hinting there? Followed by another history lesson which has what to do with using racial slurs against the Japanese? Are you trying to justify or apologise for it?

I know nothing about actual racism? What do you want me to document the swastikas, the jeering, the threats? the refusal of entry into places, the spitting, the physical violence, the confrontations with various people and organisations? Not to mention the stuff I got growing up for not being real Irish? The stuff my cousin got in the States for being mixed race?

So, finally the old ignore option and a point blank refusal to answer my question.

    Brave lad.

And a sexist parting shot, of course.

You've been told the term is offensive but you point blank refuse to acknowledge it. Very telling.

chopper6 & old hippy, don't post in this thread again. And if this argument spills over into other threads you'll both face a ban.

Context is everything, or so they say.
Personally I have never heard the term Paki used except in the context of an insult or derogatory term, along the same lines as Nig&er, C**n, etc.
In general parlance so far as I know it is always considered an ignorant, racist and abusive term.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 189 ✭✭pedanticpat

I've said already, my Pakistani friend doesn't mind it when white people use it as long as they don't mean it in a derogatory way. I don't use it, but he's said that when talking to him if I said something like 'a group of Pakis'. He doesn't mind it. As you've mentioned, it's all about context, and he's just one person, not necessarily representative of the whole lot of them. Generally speaking, it's best to steer clear of any words that may cause offense.

I reckon a lot of people, especially older folks, use the term without meaning malice. Intent/context is important. It is a pretty crass word though - I wouldn't use it unless taking the piss, and I wouldn't see it as unreasonable for an Asian person (because it gets applied to all Asians in between the Middle East and East Asia) to find it insulting.

I work with a man who is a good 30 years older and he regularly uses terms like 'queers', 'gypsies', 'birds' etc. I don't think he means any harm. He's an intelligent and funny guy who happens to be a product of a different era. I'm certainly not going to pontificate to him about what he can or cannot say.

Intent is secondary to reception, however. There are plenty of people in this thread alone who wouldn't find the term offensive but, to be blunt, their opinions don't matter. The only reaction that does is those whom the term is used to refer

Which is an important distinction: just because people use a racist term doesn't necessarily make them racist but nor does it excuse use of the term

    So what?

Those terms have none of the impact that "Paki" does and you bloody well know that.

I'm thinking you're either being willfully ignorant or just dumb.

Never says he uses the term 'paki' mate. And some people would consider the words he uses completely unacceptable.

...and I didn't say that you did, but you're attempting an equation by mentioning them, when they don't belong in the discussion.

In any case, the term "queer" is used by the homosexual community on a regular basis. "Gypsy" is actually a legal term, which is used in many quarters by the Romani themselves and "bird" has no umph attached to it whatsoever.

Out of each of those terms, only "Gypsy" can be construed as, perhaps, being offensive, to some, in certain cases.

Whereas, "Paki" is well known to anybody, with a modicum of intelligence, to be a term of derision when used in common parlance.

Yes, by the homosexual community. A straight person calling a gay person "queer" can still very much be considered offensive

If one group is using a particular word, even in a jestful manner, then they absolve all notions of "offence" when another group uses it.
