Where did i mention ALL japanese people?

I said i saw a bunch of them crammed into a lift.

Yes...i'm curious as to why A) They'd be wearing smog masks in Dublin and B) why could they not use the stairs that was right beside them?
    ,

You're obviously wondering what it is about being Japanese that's making them do that, otherwise why would you a) mention that they were Japanese and b) look for an answer from a "Japanese expert"? You don't have to use the word "all" for it to be clear that you're implicating all Japanese people and you know that well.

    Stop acting innocent

Do you know that for many years in the UK cornershops were known as "Pakis" as they were largely owned by Pakistanis?

Likewise you hear lots of people talking about going to the "chinks" to get chinese food.

    Context is everything.

Chinks, Pakis, Coons, Sambos, Wogs, Nips, Ni**ers, etc etc etc. I would suggest that none of them are acceptable in any context, apart from sambo maybe? which somehow got converted (in Ireland) into a slang word for sandwich

It must be quite jarring for visitors to hear people going on about "I could murder a sambo, giz the arse off that fag" etc, a lot of American people can't even get their heads around our casual relationship with the words fúck and cúnt never mind bad words that actually mean something innocent

Do they use 'sambo' in the US? Apart from in wrestling clubs I mean.

Saw a bunch of Japanese tourists(complete with smog masks) crowding into a disabled lift to travel the equivilent of one flight of stairs. The stairs were ten feet to the left of the lift.

Maybe our japanese expert can explain this profound lazyness?

The masks you refer to are very common in East Asia. People wear them on buses, trains, cycling etc. It's sometimes to protect from germs, sometimes (in a polite way) to protect others from their germs and sometimes (more in parts of China) to protect from the smog. It's not unlike wearing a scarf or gloves or a winter coat to protect from the cold.

I have no idea why the tourists chose the disabled lift. Perhaps they didn't realise it was for disabled people or that the stairs were nearby. Was this at a station? Most train stations have lifts and we often use them because it's easier than going up several flights of stairs and/or hauling luggage. Out of curiosity, how do you know these people were Japanese?

Mostly ingnorant people use those offensive terms. You wouldn't endear yourself to people if you used it over here, that's for sure. Unless you've just breezed in from 1973...

Is that so? I was born in 1971...i've heard the term chinky used hundreds of times and at no stage was it a racist slur..it was a slang reference to a chinese takeaway.

I'd imagine that in real life you're a crashing bore, constantly pointing out allegedly offensive things and correcting people....the life and soul of every party.

How about you take a trip over to Asia, refer to everything as Paki this and Chinky that with no white people around to get offended on other people's behalf. I'm sure lovely little not racist at all you and the not-offended locals will get on like a house on fire once you get away from all the liberal do-gooders

I imagine that you're still stuck in 1971 going by such infantile and wilfuly ignorant statements. Would you use that term to your East Asian friends or colleagues?

I'd rather being infinitely boring than an apologist for racism.

"Farang" simply means foreigner. Specifically a foreigner from Europe.

    It can also mean "guava".

So the biggest joke attached there is if a western "Farang" happens to be eating a "farang".

    There's no malice in it.

So i'm not racist myself..i'm "an apologist for racism"...is this somebody who doesnt go shouting about racism where there was none intended?

In a way you're a conspiracy theorist...you see everybody to be foaming with xenophobia and bigotry and you rarely,if ever talk about anything else...i wonder why this is?

It's an unhealthy fascination i must say and one that cant be very healthy.

Funny that. I find that those who are repeatedly told that something is offensive, that there is more to it than just a word, that it does cause hurt and grief - and then those people try and justify using it and sure, hasn't it always been used - those people seem to be of unhealthy and unsound mind to me.

For the record, most people aren't consumed by xenephobia and bigotry but threads like these seem to bring the exceptions to the rule out of the woodwork.

    I wonder why this is?

Oh and btw, you still haven't answered my question.

Would you use that term to your East Asian friends or colleagues?

The old racist card is over-played by some people.
It would seem that there is a massive over-reaction to the slightest hint of racism.

The word 'Paki' is perceived to be of negative connotation and therefor should never be used - fair enough

But I think it is often the case where somebody calls another 'a f****n Paki' in the heat of the moment because they are looking for a quick insult to use

Likewise if the person on the receiving end was Tall then it would have been 'a Lanky f****r'

A person with little hair might be called a 'Baldy f****r'

A person who is over weight would be a 'Fat f****r' and so forth

I think a lot of the time people look for some visual difference and use this to enhance an insult, not because they are racist.

A racist act is should be classified as an act resulting from ethnic discrimination rather than just a loose comment.

An example would be the England football manager called some guy a 'cheeky monkey' and the fall out was horrendous , threatening his careeer etc.

If you think using the term Paki is racist .. watch this guy push the racism factor into next week.

I used to work in a factory with several Pakistanis and of the ones I got to know not one of them found it offensive, provided it wasn't followed by cu*t, bast*rd or whatever.

Had quite a long discussion about it and racism in general one day. They didn't find Ireland too bad at all for it. An odd comment here and there but nothing major.

My best friend's family is from Kashmir and he's a muslim(in name only,he drinks like a fish etc) and he regularly calls me an infidel,a godless heathen and so on...i respond in kind and we both laugh about it...we are friends.

My GF is a turkish muslim, she cares not one whit about what people say about her or her religeon...she has far more to say about this country and it's attitudes to it's own people....

First off it is not my intention to be insulting, and I am not trying to offend but I have a genuine question. I am not trolling or trying to flame.

If mods feel that the question is out of order then please remove.

My question is why is the term Paki considered a racial slur. I always thought that it was simply a short way of saying Pakistani in the same way as if you are from these places you would be a ..

    Dublin - Dub
    Austrialian - Aussie
    Britian - Brit
    Scotland - Scot

I can understand that if it was said in the wrong tone ( eg You f****ng P**I) then it would sounds horrible but what if it was something like saying , "That P**i lad that works in the bank is sound ". Is that really racist ?

Can perhaps anybody from Pakistan explain ?

I'm like you, didn't understand what the big deal was, until I was called Paki and 2 seconds later punched in the face. I just told the guy to calm down, also I knew the guy, I ended up with two black eyes, he ended up looking like a racist gob****e.

I have a dark complexion, my father, grandfather and great grandfather had the nickname of "Darkie", which I could deal with is being called Darkie or Paki, cause I'm not your average looking Irish person

I'm as Irish as anyone who wants to proof themselves, I've had my great, great, great grandfather on every side of my family records to proof that back as far as 1820's, beyond that no one knows, including the person who hit me.

So, why should I end up with two black eyes and be called a pakie:confused:
