Is staff discount subject to benefit in kind tax? Surely getting half-price electricity is a huge benefit.

In the same way that the Dail Bar and Restaurant are subsidised i'd say.

People should always be paid what they are worth to an organisation, public or private sector. To give a 55% discount on a State commodity, which is not performance related, is just not right

Didn't Enda pay one of his advisers 35k over the odds despite putting pay caps in place. AND that from the public purse.
Enda has set the trend it seems.

In the past I have been accused of being a doctor, nurse, garda, teacher and bus driver on these boards. I wish I had all their money :D

Fully private companies can give 100% staff discount for all I care. This concept of giving State money away as if it was their own is disgusting in my opinion
oh? i thought people wanted public service workers to suffer because the private sector workers are? face the same cuts and be payed the same? so surely then if private sector companies can give discounts then so can the state and semi-state companies as well?

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

Have you guys seen the ESB Sportsco Club; should say it is one of the best with many many amenities.
These guys get discount there as well.

Yes just like the hospital administrators raiding the coffee shop till to boost their huge wage while the poor nurse gets a pittance.

You still don't get it. Private money can be spent whatever way the shareholders want. Public money shouldn't be given away in this manner, it's not theirs......

I was googling my own name (as I do most evenings) and this thread popped up. I've had a good laugh reading the rants from the plebs on here. Most of you are probably unemployed! Your unjustified anger is rooted in jealousy. You're mad because you don't work in the public sector and receive the generous wage packet that we do. Tough sh*t. Life isn't fair.

    Have a good evening,
    Brendan

It's not public money, what gives you that idea.

Even if it is was there is noting wrong with rewarding employees with good discounts. It's pure and utter begrudgery form you nothing else.

Not aimed at you it was an actual question ,

I defend the right of the worker to get the best pay and conditions he can. Regardless of sector.
You can be sure the big boys at the top do.

100,000's of pensions are in big trouble in this country and the people can do nothing about it yet but the spoilt brats in the public sector can hold the country to ransom.

there should be a law brought in to make trade unions illegal in return for an independent employee tribunal board. Unions are outdated and nothing but troublesome, treacherous organisations.

    Ha ha.
    An employer ?
I remember working where there was no union. Nobody would want to return to that.
Those pensions are in trouble because of poor Government and greed of employers.

Thats not what you're doing here. You're asking me to take a hit to satisfy a pension company. You.continually post about bankers ripping.people off. Well, this is the same thing. If the ESBs pension provider has a problem sort it out with them or sue them. Dont involve me in their mess please.

Lol. The pension is in trouble because it was robbed. Not by ESB customers either.

Enlighten us then. How would you sort it?

You're so angry about the salary increases, you actually said the same thing twice. But this has zero to do with salary/price hikes/increases. It's about a pension fund for the workers that the ESB won't pay into when they're apparently supposed to.

Please show me where ESB are suppose to pay into it, are you forgetting the 2010 deal where ESB paid in nearly €600 million euro. Why don't employee's up their contributions?

Should all companies that had a deficit not pay dividends to shareholders?

Your attitude is of one, if there is a deficit then the company should do everything they can to fill the void. How about ESB decide not to give anyone an increase in wages for the next 10 years, and use the savings to fill the deficit - how many employees do you think would vote for this?

Through the courts. Jesus, should I go on strike every time Sky TV breaks down. Should I stick it to the man because I lost money on the horses?

Seriously. This has NOTHING to do with the general public. THIS IS 100% THE FAULT OF THE COMPANY ESB IS EMPLOYING.

So you are comparing Sky Sports and horse betting to the pension of a man who has worked for 40 years and paid his contributions? Marvelous.

Seriously what is with the random comments that have nothing to do with the problems, the reason why the pensions are in trouble is because of the collapse in the markets and hence the investments where wiped out. That has nothing to do with the Government.

Where is this greed you are talking about employers?
Private DB Schemes are funded solely by the employer - if they were greedy they could offer bad terms for the final salary, instead of 1/60th for every year work of your salary, up to max of 40 years.

How many private sector people are members of unions, I've never been asked or offered the chance to join a union.
