The E39, even in SE spec, is one of the best looking BMW's to be honest.

It's basically timeless and ages very well.

But it's also amazing, what difference you can make with very little subtle changes.

This is how my old Touring was, when I got it

Laquer flaking, dings in every panel, etc.

This is how it looked after the cleanup, initial part repaint and replacing the rear lights with more modern LED tinted lights.

And this is how it looked like just before I sold it, with a complete MSport conversion (interior, exterior and suspension) and a good few other changes.

    All the same car.

Looks pretty damn good, especially from the back. If it had an E36 front, it would be perfect. :)

    Different kettle of fish. You can't compare a 3-series with a 5-series.

I didn't want to go with the MSport front bumper, as everyone does it. Hence the Alpina bumper.

The car was sold nearly 2 years ago now, but I see it the odd time and it still looks brilliant. That and the sound, of the cat-back exhaust system. Oh the sound.

Sort of regret ever selling it, but then it wouldn't have made sense to hold on to it, as I would have used it for work, driven it into the ground and I still have the other E39.

    ...or E30

They both look more aggressive than the E39.

If you read my comment, that was on purpose. I went with an Alpina bumper instead to be different. Much more exclusive.

Oh. And nearly all mods are OEM, with the exception of rear lights and the nav system.

Marlow that E39 was a beauty :) With the rear lights it looks way more modern it's crazy!

Yeah. They were aftermarket lights, that were inspired on the likes of the layout of an E92. Really made a huge difference.

That's what I mean with subtle changes, that make a lot of difference.

The same for example with changing the normal mirrors for M5 ones, which are much more streamlined.

But... That's butchering 2 cars to make something not quite as good as either! :(

If one want's an E30, get an E30 and vice versa. Otherwise that stuff ends up on barryboys

Still prefer the E34 mind you (shameless plug)

My only bugbear with the E34 Saloon is the rear. It's getting very dated with the big and high rear lights. The interior is also getting a bit out of date, while the E39 just stays modern, even 17 years after the launch.

I'd have an E34 540i Sport 6-Speed Touring any day though, if one comes up for sale.

I was looking for an e39 540i for a good 6 months and no good examples came up in that time (only one rotten one and it was not in m sport spec either) so I gave up and lost interest!

I would say that an e34 540i would be even rarer (it must be quite rare as I didnt even know that one existed!)

That's the appeal to me anyway, the way it looks. Old school styling both inside and out

Maybe the number plates shouldn't display the year of the car. That may push people to change up to something newer. I prefer older cars myself. I have a 96 E36 and I consider it fairly new. I don't know, maybe that's just me, but...

Massive difference there though. The E39 M5 wasn't launched until Sept 1998, because BMW decided, that the 540i was more than adequate. The E39 was launched mid '96.

E34 540i's aren't that rare. But the Sport manual 6-speed is.

The thing there was, that in the E34, the M5 and the 540i weren't far apart powerwise. With the Sport 6-speed, you basically had the choice of 2 performance saloon/tourings in the E34. The M5 with the inline-6 and the 540i Sport with the V8. There was only about 20 bhp between them.

Had the pleasure of driving Marlow's Touring. Outstanding car, really was faultless with outstanding mods. I'd love one

That's not camber if you are referring to the front wheels.
