I got an email from Tesco today saying I would've saved 4.99 in lidl if I'd shopped their so they sent me a voucher code.
If only Lidl and Aldi had online shopping!

I don't think its viable for them yet. Its counts for only 3% of Tesco sales. When you take in the cost of labour, tech, equipment and fuel a company would need a fairly big share of the market to make it work.

But if Aldi keep doing what they are doing, im sure it will be there in the future.

Aldi and lidl don't do it in the continent or Uk where they have a much wider base.

I would suspect they will never venture into online shopping

Which products were cheaper in Lidl/Aldi?

Tesco advert. Is this a bit condescending?

Aldi/Lidl have their own higher class range now as well "Specially Selected/Deluxe" which are directly comparable to those Tesco Finest things so no need to compromise on quality either.

At Lidl at least, I am surprised with the amount of refrigerated cabinet and freezer space they are giving over to the higher priced Deluxe range. The aren't huge stores to start with so percentage wise it's significant.

I am sure they have done their market research but I cant help but thinking that people are going to to likes for Lidl for low prices and now necessarily willing to pay a premium for a deluxe range but I am sure I could be wrong.

Yes - sure they know better than the consumer about comparisons. We know they read here by the short lived unofficial rep, but maybe they've been getting complaints about the comparisons? As highlighted here, it appears they're only comparing exactly matching products - where Aldi or Lidl are offering bigger pack sizes for the same or less money, they're not including them. This ad is their wriggle room.

    Eh, that is false.
Tesco are comparing like with like, no matter the quantity. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=87320779&postcount=311

I would be myself as they are a good bit cheaper than other upmarket ranges of comparible quality. I hope they stock all the range all year round, not jsut for Xmas. The Tiramsu I bought there last week was really really good :D

Then why didn't they compare their chocolate to Lidl's or Aldi's? Theirs was 1.89€ for 100g (85% cocoa). Aldi does a 85% cocoa at 1.29€ for 125g, I bought one on Saturday

Are all the ingredients the same?

Cocoa mass, sugar, cocoa butter, vanilla extract. So yes, the same

I had the same on odourless garlic pills (240 tablets), the exact same potency, same dosage, etc... But Tesco didn't compare them with the Aldi ones, the ticket just said n/a.

I wasn't going to trawl back the whole thread, but it was the chocolate I had in mind, as has now been put forward again. But your follow up to that post is kind of my point - looking to used the wriggle room that ad is trying to create.

Seems to me that this marketing campaign is working to a certain extent. People are shopping in Tesco to see what money they would/should have got off. I'm kind of baffled why people would bother, it's Tesco, what do they think is going to happen.

Tesco do an OK 85% cocoa for €1.19 so why they concede the Swiss choc €1.89 as their competitive reference price is a bit odd. They're happy to pad out the voucher, selectively admit they're more expensive - return part of the gouge as a bribe in the hope you'll never think it worthwhile to switch and discover what real quality and value are out there. It's a retail promo 'Truman Show'.

Not really a lot Tesco can do about it. With 85% cocoa solids that's 15 grams max of paracetamol :pac:

Are they, or is it just that people are/would be in tesco anyway? Sometimes Tesco or Dunnes or whereever is more convenient, even if you know Aldi or Lidl would be cheaper. It's not always a straight go for the best value choice - available time, location of respective shops, etc all impact.

I think in large part it's a campaign to retain the customers they haven't yet lost as it seems their numbers have been on a downward spiral. My guess is that they would have to do something more drastic to actually regain the customers who have already fled.

I wont be happy until Tesco start selling jackets for a pony like Lidl often do

Nought better than a decent jacket on a pony

Even in price conscious times you're right - the convenience of a 'one stop' shop is a huge draw. People have lives to lead and established retail habits are hard to break too. it would be good if the drift away would reach a point that Tesco etc. would be compelled to engage in genuine competition to retain customers, raising standards and value all round - rather than gimmicky promos.

What they'd have to do then is match Aldi/Lidl own brands on price and quality. Might sound simple but to date tesco have stubbornly failed to do this. Their Everyday Value (?) range is autroicious and no where near the discounters ranges.

To a degree, but I was more thinking along the lines of myself. I still spend in Tesco, but that doesn't mean I buy into this gimmick. I've a tesco around the corner from work, under 2 minutes walk. Aldi or Lidl are 20plus minutes walk each way, or a car drive. If I need just a few bits, it's not worth the walk, and definitely not worth the fuel, to save a couple of euro in a basket. For the big shop, the savings mount up (and we usually go Aldi), but you have to weight up time versus money - Tesco is essentially a convenience shop for us now.

Tesco will continue to fall, people find them tacky and full of bad quality products now whereas this was the case with Aldi and Lidl before.
    Perception is everything.

In my latest shop from tesco of 45 items 8 were short dated but not listed on the receipt and 3 were out of date today.

There is also no sign of any savings from the price promise but the tesco wraps are cheaper than aldi by 16cent except the aldi wraps are the size of dinner plates while the tesco ones are as small as side plates. No real value to be had in tescos either in store or online.

The old buyer beware which could always apply in supermarkets does not apply to online shopping as the customer does not have the opportunity to examine the items and check dates before paying.

Just to let you know Foggy when you ring up Tesco cs and complain about your short dated products you will get a full refund for them,I always have any time I had a problem with my online shop and use by dates are bad.

Yes they are quite good that way but I am afraid that they will think it is some kind of scam as I get so much refunded. About €13 this time. Every delivery I get about a tenner back for damages short dates or stuff being smaller than what is advertised.

Take pics and send them to the customer service. If that happens so often, would you not consider getting deliverd by Superquinn or Supervalu? (not as expensive as it looks, if you stick to specials and use one of the - very generous - codes that can be found online. I just got 20€ off a 60€ shopping)

I got 72 christmas cans of beer and cider for €55 from Superquin:D

As for the Tesco weights being wrong, that is being handled by the Legal Metrology Service.

I find tesco the cheapest compared to SuperValuQuinn for online, Might just go back to Aldi for real savings without the gimmicks and short dated refunds

A 4 pack of frys turkish delight is 1.50 in dealz, in Tesco it is 3.19 more than double the price, Tesco are taking the Irish public for fools.
