Interesting idea but that assumes that all correct prices are in the database. What happens if the actual Aldi value is different or not in their database? Tesco only do price comparisons for products they know are similar or lower in value on shelf stickers so i imagine the same policy will apply to till checking.

i don't think so because according to the indo they're expecting to hand out between €10-13 million in vouchers a year.

It appears messy to me. You have to buy ten items, the overall basket needs to be cheaper and the maximum voucher is €10.
The only benefit is clubcard points or if Tesco is more convenient. Also applies to online shopping :)

Lidl have some cheaper beer offers than Tesco at the moment.
I might buy 2x6 packs of Smithwicks and eight pieces of fruit

Easier to continue to shop in Lidl/Aldi for the various superior priced products and not be flapping about with vouchers, cash in the hand and all that, just price match Tesco if you really want to do something...

Tesco don't sell the Germans own-brands, and their own are often dearer - and crap. Not a fantastic promotion unlike the UK equivalents.

The terms and conditions are so restrictive as to be meaningless to the vast majority of individual shopping trips: it does not apply to Tesco Express shops; applies only to a number of their own brand products; and, only applies where 10 or more of such product are in your basket.

So it only applies to the Tesco main stores, only to a certain range of own brand products, and only then if you have 10+ such items in your shopping trolley. Pretty meaningless for most people I reckon.

And as others have stated I reckon that euro for euro that quality wise the Aldi/Lidl products would be superior.

also will exlcude special offers, and to be a comparible item will have to be the same weight to the exact gram

When I compare my shop between the different locations, what I buy is totally different so can't really be compared. I mean can you compare a 500g own brand product in one to a 490g own brand product in the other?

    from their website:
Does Tesco Price Promise include promotions?
Yes. We compare price reductions and most promotions – in Tesco and at Aldi and Lidl. Included are:
    • Multibuy – including ‘buy–one–get–one–free’, ‘buy 2 for €3’ and ‘3 for the price of 2’
    • Price cuts – for example, a discount from 99c to 50c
However, there are some promotions that make it difficult to make a fair comparison – no matter who’s running the offer. The promotions we don’t include are:
    • Linksave – for example, meal deals or when you buy cheese and get the crackers free
    • Category–wide – for example, ‘buy any six bottles of wine and get 5% off’
    • Multiple offers on the same range – this is when Tesco or a competitor has more than one offer on the same products running at the same time, such as ‘buy 2 for €3 or buy 5 for €6’

Another attempt from Tesco to stop the flood of shoppers moving to Lidl/Aldi.
If you manage to work out you have been overcharged and that won't be easy, you will get Tesco vouchers which you have to spend in Tesco so the turnover in Tesco will increase.
IMO it won't make a bit of difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 283 ✭✭dm1979

Come on its tesco, this is all for publicity max value €10 doesn't matter if your shop could have been €30 cheaper in aldi/lidl you only get €10 back. Swell as that they are hardly able to price their own stock correctly ( we have all been caught paying more for something that was marked at a cheaper price) so I don't know how they will manage to run this without the odd mistake.

How do you get a bargain out of this, how did UK bargainers manage to do it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,419 ✭✭✭✭rob316

Or here's any idea how about they priced there products slightly cheaper than Aldi/Lidl and not piss about with vouchers.

I prefer Aldi to any of them, there stuff is better quality than Tesco/Dunnes own brand imo.

This is good for me cause I'm a lazy git and do all my shopping in Tesco anyway, clubcard vouchers all go towards my electricity bill so this will mean cheaper electricity for me, woohoo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,558 ✭✭✭JTMan

Clearly, Tesco are worried about ongoing market share losses to Aldi and Lidl.

If all stores are price matching each other then the consumer loses, as all stores just copy Tesco price increases, for example, M&S do this with their Tesco price matching. The consumer only benefits when their is price undercutting.

The problem with Tesco is that it can be difficult, at times, to find a high quality own brand in some ranges. The Tesco 'up and down' price movements, can also drive you nuts when trying to find the best deal.

This comparison obviously takes little consideration for quality differentials no matter what it claims. Tesco own brand is frequently, but not always, sub standard to the German discounters product quality.

    +1

It's only a few years ago that Tescos own prices weren't in the database correctly :D

Unreal number of discrepancies between shelf prices and checkout prices. In fairness, Tesco has that largely sorted now...

€10 limit is a joke, even on a small shop €70 I'd save about €25-€30 in aldi. Might be worthwhile for bord gais customers

or tescomobile. 5 euro in vouchers equals 15 euro topup

If Tesco really want to compete with Aldi or Lidl why don't they just start with clear, trickless pricing on their products.

There are a few reasons why I prefer shopping in Aldi to Tesco, firstly there's the vastly superior quality for own brand type products (or at least the labels aren't as cheap looking). Secondly, I don't feel that I'm involved in a game with the retailer, one where some products do indeed offer very good value, but only if I pick exactly the right product in terms of weight, appearance and name. It's a relief to walk into a shop where the price is what it says it is, where the logic of bulk discounts normally applies, where value is absolutely transparent!!

Tesco, we really don't like to have to get our calculators out in store and usually, we don't the have the time to play the game.

In saying that, since I started reading the bargain alerts section, beating tesco at their game has become infinitely easier - cheers guys!!

Sounds like another failed Tesco Campaign to compete with the Germans. Remember cost cutters when they brought in some cheapo brands or tried to compare the everyday value range which is lousy quality compared to the german standard brands. That started in a blaze of marketing and disappeared after a month or so.

Tesco price database is usually suspect so customers should have fun pointing out the errors but at the end of the day the difference is paid out in Tesco vouchers so they have a captive customer.

Tried it this morning. The form asks you to "Please enter the District Electoral Division number from your delivery note" and your order number if you shopped online.

Anyone know where you find the "District Electoral Division number"? It doesn't appear on the delivery notice and I can't see it online.

Edit: I rang Tesco. It should be on the receipt from the driver. Guess it wasn't because the order was a few days ago.

I love that in lidl/aldi you can do your shopping into 20-25 mins. Whereas in tesco it can take you nearly 90mins in the larger stores like a tesco extra. Unless tesco was significantly cheaper, it's not worth wasting 90 mins to do a shop that takes 20 mins in lidl

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

Very messy system, and you have to trust that Tesco are actually having correct and updated Aldi/Lidl prices.
I still won't shop at Tesco.

    Real world results:

Did a bit of shopping in Tesco this morning - 32 different items( a few multiple buys
    total cost €76
Picked up a few items that I thought would be found in Lidl or Aldi

Went home and checked the results on the price promise website

Fillet Steak marked n/a on the price promise
1 doz eggs marked n/a on the price promise
12 x 500 mls water marked n/a on the price promise
Bananas Tesco claimed to be 46 cent cheaper than Lidl for 1.2Kg. This was bananas at 86 cent per Kg
Tesco breaded chicken nuggets marked n/a on the price promise
HOCHLAND GOUDA SLICES 200G( which I've bought in Lidl) marked n/a on the price promise
Tesco Ready to serve custard: I paid 99 cent in Tesco . They did tell me that Aldi custard is 65 cent I could have saved 34 cent in Aldi on the custard.
    Rice same price
    Sugar same price
Cooked Ham marked n/a on the price promise
Only 7 items had a price comparison

    I got a voucher that told me I'd saved 12 cent. i.e.

I didn't get a 34 cent voucher for the custard.
It is the nett difference . I thought that I would get a voucher for the items that tesco were dearer.

There were a few items that had n/a that were possibly cheaper in Tesco e.g.
cadbury crunchies 1.45 for 6 in Tesco . Think Lidl sell them at 4 for €2?

You know time is money too.

And why bother shopping in Tesco's where you have to mess around with vouchers and constantly check every single item to see if your saving money or not.

Where as you can just go shop in Aldi/Lidl get your shopping done quicker, and not bother wasting time checking to see if you can claim back money in vouchers. You already know your getting a better price.

I find that tesco takes longer at the till then aldi and Lidl as well.

The only thing that is handy about Tesco is the 24 hour Opening times. Other then that Aldi and Lidl all the way.

Aldi and lidl - cheap prices and none of your messing. That's what people want.

I don't understand how these 'price matching promotions' are not illegal.

If the supermarkets agree in secret to match each others prices, that's illegal. if the supermarkets announce in public and call it a promotion, that's all ok?

It seems to have evolved from the stickers showing price comparisons saying 'look, we're cheaper than our competitor"
then it was stickers saying "look, we're the same price as our competitor" and now they're just saying "look, whatever our competitor charges, we'll match it"

It's collusion. They're sending a signal to the german multiples "Don't bother to reduce your prices cause we'll match them, but we're not going to undercut your prices so you can keep the market segment that you have now and we'll keep ours."

    Good ole Tesco!!!

Treasure Island is still doing for them it seems.

Still, Aldi will be watching to make sure they play fair.....

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2012/1207/357331-tesco-aldi-price/

The Commercial Court has been told that a settlement has been reached between Aldi and Tesco after the German chain sued its supermarket competitor over inaccurate price comparisons.
Mr Justice Peter Kelly was told in the commercial division of the High Court this morning that Tesco agreed to pay Aldi €150,000 in damages and to a number of undertakings regarding in-store price comparisons.

Aldi had alleged that Tesco infringed its trademarks in an in-store campaign that involved inaccurate and unfair comparisons between products sold by the two supermarket chains.

    ..........................

Aldi says it will forward the €150,000 settlement to the St Vincent de Paul charity.

Legal costs were also awarded to Aldi.

Aldi/Lidl carry approx 2,000 lines in a store, Tesco on average carry 12,000.

Large proportion of Aldi/Lidl are own brand, so limited price comparisons will be possible.

Looks like a desperate attempt to convince us that they are as cheap as Aldi/Lidl.

I personally find Aldi and Lidl rubbish .
I work for Tesco and know the tricks that they can get up to, but still find the whole range in Tesco and Dunne's miles better. Both with taste and selection . Them other German stores may save you a few pence, but the stores are small as is the range , and the check outs are a nightmare both in design and wait times.

Not worth the hassle . It seems an already small store has a quarter of the floor space taken up with wet suits, silly electrical junk, generators and plastic gardening tools. I don't get the hype TBH. Price challenge or not.

    But that's just me.

Any idea why these products aren't on the price promise? Do they not quite get the point of their promotion?

I can vouch for the fact that all the items above are available in Aldi.

Re the fillet steak, maybe you got it from the butchery department as opposed to their 'finest matured steaks', in which case I can understand why comparison might not be readily available.
A word to the wise, Aldi's fillet steaks at 13.99 for 2 are from the supplier and of the same quality as Superquinn's legendary black label fillets which retail at 19.99 for the same quantity.

Not really, chances are you'll probably loose it or just forget to use it the next time. Its a marketing gimmick, that's all. Not even a good one at that, its tedious and messy.

I'll still go to the Germans for the bulk of my shopping and get the stuff I have to from Tesco.

Honestly. No bias. Although Aldi and lidl are taking some sales of us, its only 1 or 2% and as the economy improves, I believe Tesco (and Dunnes) will claw them customers back when they have a few more pound to spend and dont need to watch every penny.
I'm not bias as I know Tesco will always be No.1 in Ireland and our sales prove it. We are propping up sales in the UK and booming in Ireland and ever expanding.
As for value for money. You mention you saved half, Can you provide a comparable shopping list that saved half on your shop? :p

Well the fact that they have a very popular thread of their own on bargains speak volumes. It's simply a better supermarket. Just as Dunne's and Supervalue are also miles better than the German fad.

Is this a wind up? A fad with 9200 stores worldwide including 105 in Ireland (figures for Aldi alone).
