    Just for some information.

I looked at this as a serious business venture with a rather succesful entraupeneur.

I had worked for him previously and he ran a very succesful business( and still does) and was a very succesful IT consultant.

When we looked into it, and the the margins we would want to be making to make it worthwhile, end market price was alot higher then what you can get from places like Germany etc.

The problem is there is no Irish wholesaler who deals in decent specifications/branded gaming brands at reasonable prices.

    Hi Johnny
I have no tech knowledge; just surf and play poker ,other games etc. Had settled on buying a Toshiba Satellite P850-321 for €600 but then saw your post and now don't know what to do.

Ireland can't compete with an international company in Germany. Ireland has a population of 4 million people, Germany has over 80 million, this means German companies have greater buying power allowing them to buy more, get greater discounts meaning they can offer the hardware out cheaper, they probably make the same percentage as other companies that charge more. An Irish company can't make the same investment in product because they won't have enough people to sell them too. It's simples.

What other games? Unless it's BF3, you will be fine with that laptop.

hi kinda new to this but i am looking to buy/build a gaming PC but to be honest i have not got a clue what i am doing i would much rather build one because i am not made of money so i could buy the part's whenever i have it can anyone help out

If you have no idea what you're doing but still want to build one, I'd suggest trawling through YouTube for videos of people building PCs so you can see what it is you'd be doing. After that, come back here with a budget and a list of things you'll be needing the machine for and we'll be able to help.

Building a machine isn't too difficult, picking all the right parts (and under budget) is the hard bit. However, if you're a novice, having a guarantee from a manufacturer/shop if something goes sideways is a big comfort.

For how to literally assemble the components I thought this video was quite helpful:

It's the same as building anything to a large degree. Measure twice, cut once, get organised, have a clear space for assembly, take breaks if you're getting flustered.

Use this link if you want to start a thread about a specific build:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=74542374
It saves a lot of time by setting out exactly what you want from a PC.

sorry for bumping this thread. I quickly scanned through the pages so sorry if someone already said it, but its worth checking out www.pcspecialist.co.uk, they have good prices on both gaming laptops and desktops. I've also found their forums extremely helpful when trying to decide on certain spec

First piece of advice, dont buy from dell and especially not from custompc (so many reports of screwing customers over and they are stupidly overpriced)

OverclockerUK is a good place to go for parents that don't want to build it themselves for their kids. They'll build it for free if you buy the parts off them. They have good after sales support too, if you need it. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=43&catid=2473

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

What exactly do you want, are you looking to be pointed to a place to shop?

We can pick that parts out for you so you get the best for your money.
and you just order it from the site we recommend they will build and ship to your door.

I know its a bit more effort than buying from Dell or custom pc. But really they will sell you a donkey and tell you It's a race horse. We will help you out with what everything.

So he has an Xbox 360. And specifically said he wants a pc for gaming. Didn't mention the Xbox 1 coming out or ps4?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7 wendy13

sterlingarcher yea he wanted the pc gamer but i might see if he wants the xbox one in stead it seems to be the best option do u no if u can play 360 games on xbox one ? thanks for yr help

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,265 ✭✭✭..Brian..

Wendy, being honest with you, you're better off just getting the Xbox One or PS4. For your budget, especially when you need a copy of Windows and all peripherals (keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers/headset etc), €500 isn't going to get you anywhere close to the level of an Xbox. You'd want to have closer to €1000 to spend for everything.

Also, even though it's a fairly simple process to assemble a PC, you will need to be somewhat tech savvy and have the patience to research and learn how to resolve any issues that will inevitably crop up. Now personally I'd consider this a positive as you're learning as you go and you will build up a good knowledge of PCs, but it takes time, patience and most importantly, interest.

Xbox one does not play the older Xbox 360 games that he already has.. kids can be so fickle so find out for sure.

As mentioned it costs to start from scratch even when shopping around. only way you could get a decent gaming pc for 500 with all the monitor and stuff would be second hand. Let us know what he says

It's a great site to buy from, I've used it but, I wouldn't recommend it for a parent that knows nothing about building a PC. Yes, they will build it for you for a small fee but there have been a few on here that have reported problems with them doing it and calling Germany for support won't be easy. You'd be on your own if something goes wrong. OverclocksUK might cost a bit more but you'd get better support. Also , you don't need to spend 1000 euro on a gaming PC. I built my son a gaming PC with windows and Monitor for six hundred euro's so it can be done. And, Xbox one is going to cost more than 500 euro after you're done spending money on all the add on extras. Like another controller and xbox live. With all the game deals off of Steam, a gaming PC will be the cheaper option in the end.

I know this post is a bit late but I recently came across a store online for gaming pc's based in Ireland. Lot more cheaper than most out there and the spec seems to be better standards on the pc's. Check them out, my cousin got a starter gaming pc of them & he said it is very good for the price he paid. [shill URL snipped] This is a fairly new store but seems to be beating the rest....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,106 ✭✭✭turbot

Many of the e-commerce sites with.ie domain names fulfil the orders from the UK or even China (Dell).

Virtually none of the components are actually made here - so buying locally doesnt make that much sense if prices are much higher.

I know someone who is very happy with the high end gaming computer they got from scan computers in the UK. It is stable, superfast (overclocked watercooled Haswell & gtx 780 / ssd) and was great value compared to any locally available choices.

I can't really justify spending 2K+ on PC right now, but once Elite Dangerous with its full HD Oculus Rift support exits beta, I might buy myself something like that to play it properly.

Their Performance Intel Extreme Gaming PC for €940 comes with a GTX 650?!! It also comes with an overclockable CPU but a MOBO not very good for over clocking according to the interwebs. No mention of the brand of PSU, just says 500w.

Not to mention Windows is not included in the price. No thanks, you can do much much better.

Performance Extreme Gaming PC me bollix!

No surprise since it's his first post. Is there any way to check the business info of a domain name to see if it's linked to a business?

Hi Folks, I currently play World of Tanks on my laptop and to be honest the laptop doesn't cut it, I'm in the market for a budget gaming pc or would consider a second hand gaming pc if one of you fine people was upgrading their own. The minimum specs for WOT are:

    Operating system: Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 8
    Processor: 2.2 GHz supporting SSE2
RAM: 1.5 GB for Windows XP, 2 GB for Windows Vista / 7
Video Card: GeForce 6800 / ATI X1800 with 256 MB RAM & compatible with DirectX9.0c
    Sound: Compatible with DirectX9.0c
    Hard drive space: 16 GB
    Internet Speed: 256 Kbps

    with the recommended being:

    Operating system: Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 8 - 64-bit
    Processor: Intel Core i5-3330
    RAM: 4 GB
    Video card: GeForce GTX660 (2GB) / Radeon HD 7850 2GB, DirectX 9.0c
    Sound: Compatible with DirectX9.0c
    Hard drive space: 30 GB
Internet Speed: 1024 Kbps or higher

I have never built a pc before and would have no clue how to go about it to be honest, but i was told to have the following if possible:

5 4xxx cpu, graphics with around GTX760 performance and good PSU (this is MUST be for every PC)

Mobo can be cheap, it can be mATX because u wont need anything more anyways, most important is socket 1150.

If anyone could be of assistance that'd be excellent- i do have a limited budget
