Just because you had no hg issues from your car doesn't mean that the vast majority of people didn't.

Also you don't have to let these engines overheat for them to blow a hg. Overheating will occur in some cases due to coolant leakage which will lead to hg failure.

However it's got nothing to do with maintenance or coolant leakage in most cases. they blow headgaskets under normal engine temperatures most of the time. It's the design of the head and the long bolt setup that is the main reason why the hg fails in these.

I agree there are significant shortcomings in the design of the engine. My point is though that if you are aware of these, and under no circumstances let the engine overheat, you are unlikely to blow the HG

How is it that the HG problem seems to be worse than anywhere else here in Ireland, and worse in particular with the Freelander? Exact same engine as in the Rover 75 but the latter is more likely to be driven by a (not very young) male. Whereas the former.... :pac:

And I too got the impression that they suffered relatively less trouble in the Lotus, although these cars are driven very, very hard. But by mechanically minded / sympathetic people.

Nice find, BorneTobyWilde. I would appreciate your posts a lot more if you put them up more like this (maybe we all should):

    '01 Golf GTI 20V, NCT 01/15, asking €1,275

Be sure to add a text link for those of us using phones though. :)

I was thinking of asking to make it mandatory to ad some details, as once a car is sold the ad is removed and you've no way of knowing anything other than the ad title...

This whole thread could be used as a price guide going back over the past few months if you were looking at something

I guess your formula is good unkel

    Model:
    Year:
    NCT:
    Price:
    (I'd ad this too) Mileage:
-Picture(does a linked image vanish after the ad is removed??)-

    I'd consider that expensive.

Edit: Dam you, that's made me want one now
I don't think it is overpriced for the sportwagon/estate - they are rarer than the standard body
Bit expensive for bangernomics though :P

How do we put up the pictures like Unkel has done with the silver golf - ie you have the picture - and clicking on it brings you into the ad.

Having a simple moment here lol.

back on topic - I know its tempting to stick the boot in at Mk 4 Golfs - but that example seems a nice one - if it all checks out - it could be a nice car for someone - especially if you forget the idea of it beinga proper hot hatch and accept and enjoy it for what it is - a nicely specced golf with a half decent engine that can move a bit

I prefer posts with the link above the ad and it's easer to do. SaabEds posts here were nearly always just a link in a post, nothing else, and he was the bangernomics king!

The mileage was what lead me to think it expensive. Still it looks well minded.

Instill don't think I would own an estate without kids however.

Yeah I wouldn't get an SW either without kids, but if I had to then that would be what I'd want. Style and a good engine :)

I do like some estates, mostly BMW or Alfas, but I don't think I would buy one unless I needed it.

There are some lovely estates out there but unless I need one I wouldn't buy one.

If I was looking for a 156 though and I didn't need an estate Id still get one. I think they are much better looking than the Saloon. :)

There is no NCT on that car though. Doesn't belong :)
Let him NCT it and then its a bangernomic.
Can't understand why people try to sell a car before they are NCT'ing it. Just pay the 55 quid if you're so confident in the car and up the price by a 100e.

The fact the seller is selling a recovery truck leads me to believe this car may not be the bargain it appears to be.

Check it again fellas nctd till next year. There was none originally. In reference to the tow truck for sale its a 650 yoyo honda legend. Its worth more in parts. Totally bangernomics worthy

Bear1 I agree totally with the nct thing. Infuriating ads "nct prepared" nct ready etc. Just stick it in if it'll definitley pass.

The idea of this thread is to post cars you'd actually drive. Not cars you'd buy and break for parts. If the car is shagged, as are other cars the seller is selling including a recovery truck and a flat bed transport trailer, it still leads me to believe it could work out to be a pile of junk. Also, the seller indicates in the ad that they may have only owned it for a month. Why is he selling so soon? Indeed a quick check reveals he only got it on the 19th of September.

I'm not saying don't buy, I'm saying check it out carefully.

I stand corrected, thought it read 2013.
It does now qualify as a bangernomic. :)

TBF it does state in the ad
booked for nct. For this week coming and should fly through .

I'd imagine it's been for sale since the current owner bought it.

I think what the seller meant is that he has been using it non stop for a month maybe?
Maybe before it was used as a weekend car and now for some reason he needed it every day

Nope, he took ownership on the 19th of September according to motortax.ie

BA I would drive the legend in a heartbeat, then when something reaaly expensive broke id break it for parts. I dont see the problem with brekaing a car like that once it's reached the end of its usefull life. As to the checking it carefully, that counts for all bangernomics buys i'd say.
