Youtube and Google+

What is the story there lads? I use Youtube a lot and I don't want to criticise too harshly as its a free service but the non-stop bombardment of trying to get you to change your Youtube name to your Gmail name and then trying to sign you up to Google+ is annoying, has anyone else encountered this?

It began weeks ago, and is just relentlessly prompting me with the same choices, and then ultimately it gave me no choice and set me up with a Google+ account. I deleted this only for to go through the whole process again. I've give up now. I never intend to use the Google+ thing but at least Youtube will stop asking me about it.....right?

Nobody likes change on the internet. Remember when Boards change a few months ago. Give it a week and the b1tching will died down.

It wants me to change my name to Juan Kerr:confused:

This is more than just changing the layout, this is Google trying to get people to integrate their accounts so that it's easier to mine data from them and then pass it on to either advertisers (best case scenario) or the NSA (worst case scenario).

The die was cast the day Google bought YouTube. YouTube has declined steadily in quality ever since - anyone remember a time when you could use the seek bar to go back to an already watched part of the video without it trying to reload the entire thing?

They changed the comments section on the mobile version its ****e!
I think they just want more people to sign up to to google+ so they'll comment on the youtube videos through google+

It's the same on PC too, I used to like looking at the comments and upvoting or downvoting them, but that is all gone down.

Facebook is dying a slow death, I'm on the verge of deleting mine. I'm 25 years old (use WhatsApp, Twitter and LinkedIn so not a technophobe), the appallingly dire mobile versions of Facebook and too man ads and "sponsored pages" are the factors.

Bebo is back, now in pog form.

It's all down to revenue and getting new customers.

Google wants to be able to say "Hey, we have 100 million Google+ users, do you want to buy X, Y or Z?"

Google + was a flop. Google employees don't even use it. It's now being forced upon you. That's a right pain in the arse.

I really don't want to use my real name on youtube, everytime I say no but it just asks again. It's a bit like that treaty we voted no to a couple of years ago. They just pushed it again until we said yes. "Your no answer is the wrong answer, try again".

Google+ is so disgusting looking. If they made it a lot more basic I'm sure it would kick off to some degree.

It does give you the option to create a Google+ page for your YT pseudonym & you can then carry on posting morally reprehensible comments all over the shop.

I do agree though - every frickin' site, app & next technological fad is seeking to connect the various strands of your online self with everything and everyone else - share it, broadcast it, tell your friends, tweet it. It's fcuking incessant at this stage & takes some considerable effort to lock things down from a privacy perspective.

    Hows the tin foil hat?

Its a simple change that people will stop getting hot and bother over in a couple of weeks.

Google is annoying the **** out of me lately. With the unifying of email addresses so it can aggregate data from accounts you've deliberately decided to keep separate, hooking the links on search results, endless pestering on youtube but then I got an email from facebook kindly informing me that privacy settings I had used in the past were being removed and instead it defaulting to making my information more easily available. All that was missing was an attached picture of Zuckerberg's cock titled 'swivel on it'.

Wish there were better plugins for clearing cookies from facebook and google when you're not actually using facebook or gmail.

They must be trying to make Google+ a thing. But in fairness its kinda **** compared to FB. I dont know a single person that uses it or will use it. But with the right features it could be the new FB. Remember how popular Bebo was here and myspace in the US. Google+ could( but probably wont be) the new FB

I don't use it much and it's just a mess of **** from people I don't know. What's hot on google+ and such like. Looking at it makes me think I forgot to install adblock. Then there's the spammy emails telling you about trends on google+ that are almost impossible to unsubscribe from.

Just looking at it now, there's two lists of panels and some of them are clearly associated by some common theme but others are stuck in asking me about birthdays or friends I'd like to add, surrounded by random google+ posts. How did anyone in charge look at mess I think, good job lads, that's spot on.

Same here. They now have this thing where any photo that's taken on your phone is automatically uploaded to Google+. This happened with an update of the app several months ago, and at the time I deselected the box which did this. Now the latest update seems to have selected this option again.

I had a gmail I didn't use so I went about deleting it. Little did I know it had since been linked to my Youtube, so once I deleted it my videos/channel were gone too, sickened.

Being able to use them for free is great, but rolling gmail, Youtube and Google+ into one is a load of wánk.

As much as I hate this new integration,it was inevitable and expected.

However, the least they could have done was handle the whole comment system better. With the past system, upvoted comments would be seen along with the recent comments but now what appears more frequently is which comments can get the most attention seeking/longest thread going by posting absolute garbage.

Google+ is doing itself no favours by trying to eliminate the vile that you would normally find on the comment section by now allowing users with unlimited comment space.I've already seen people post entire movie scripts and books and annoying spam. What are Google/youtube intending on doing to solve this?

Already,a few big youtube channels have decided to disable comments in protest as a result but whether this will prove to have a positive reaction is doubtful.

Just Google being a little bit more evil than usual.

Remember when they were considered to be the gods of the internet? Now their reputation is in the bin. How many failed tools/services have they had now?

Just don't sign into your google account when watching YT.

Google is trying to force everyone to sign in to all their platforms so they can track one individual across multiple devices.

Google's main revenue stream (they are very honest and open about this) is personalized advertising from data mining; Google and YouTube are explicitly mentioned as part of the NSA's "PRISM" program, so it's just common sense that further data mining of customers is the main reason for all this "integration" of different services. If you have to use one account for everything, it's far easier to profile you.

Oh God, remember Google Buzz? *Shudder*

I can't stand Google + or Facebook for that matter so I don't use either. It is annoying that they try and get you to sign up so frequently, but like you say, it's free.

Which brings me to the next point - data mining - which they feel they're very much entitled to do (and maybe they are?) while offering free services, which is why I don't use gmail for anything but signing up to other services - Twitter, Spotify etc.

I prefer to use independent third parties:

    Dropbox for file storage.
Flickr for photo's (OK it's owned by Yahoo! but I don't need an account with them)
Spotify for music as well as what's on my hard drive.

The way I see it, the more Google products you use for free the more data they can mine. If you don't use Gmail they aren't getting that data from you but you aren't costing them to provide the space etc for your emails.

They give (or used to) free directory assistance in America. Great service but they use the data they collect to improve their own voice commands and recognition.

    Back to YouTube and comments

It’s not a Google + account that’s needed but a Google account. You don't have to sign up to social network stuff if you don't want to from what I can tell. So all they are asking is to use YouTube (a Google owned company) is a Google account.

Now I remember before this was whole thing was changed and the HUGE number of people complaining about the trolls and the complete and utter rubbish that was being posted,

Yes this is no doubt a way to get the Google data mining community bigger and yes they have probably gone a bit crazy over the last while with really unpopular changes (3 clicks now to change quality? really Google?)

However unless this change harms the number of people going to YouTube on a vast number and flocking elsewhere (and be honest nowhere has the quality, quantity and partnerships that YouTube have) people will adjust.

There isn't gonna be a digg like exodus anytime soon.

In a way it's kind of funny and sad for google at the same time. They are riding on the coat tails of social networking by trying to tie all their services together with the output for the user being the ultimate combined social networking experience, yet nobody wants that from google!

    :pac:

I've cut down on my use of google and slowly transferring the subscriptions/account I had tied to it, to an outlook.ie account. Just need it now for my phones account, and not really looking forward to seeing what they may end up on doing with android.

I tried Google Hangouts the other day (as its being integrated to the SMS app in 4.4) and quite frankly, it was weird!

I went to create a message to send to a contact's name to started with 'E' for example, but then all these other people started showing up - Ellie Goulding etc. Why would she want to 'hangout' with me?

Not just her, a whole host of celebrities and people I didn't even know.

That was the end of that chapter.

Facebook currently has a $65 billion market value. It is the second most visited website on the internet (Google.com is #1, and youtube.com is #3).

Facebook currently has a monopoly in social media, and as such has one of the most effective and powerful marketing platforms in existance. Google wants a slice of that action, and is using their number three site (youtube) to help them. If google can break facebooks monopoly with Google+ then it too stands to gain from mass market targeted advertising. Facebook is so effective in that it can see exactly what you like, and throw out advertisments that pertain exactly to you, whereas youtube can only seem to advertise the brand new cadillac in the states to me.

Google/Google+/Youtube would stand to gain enormously if it knew exactly who you were, where you lived, and what you were into. Each of the three sites could then target you as an individual and could make an absolute mint in the process.

It's all about the marketing. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

are they in any of your circles in google+?

Same thing happens in your contacts in your phone if its synced. You can turn it off though so its only contacts in your phone that shows or only ones with phone numbers i believe

There should be no need to tweak it though. Default for SMS shouldn't be everyone.
