It appears that they've outsourced the job, and the companies in charge of it now realised they can get free labour.

This is old news. Joan Bruton is subsidising Denis OBrien with a large hand out. Anywhere between €4,000 and €10,00 per worker. He already got €100m from Enda.

****in jobbridge ****e, can't get the dole coz I'm self employed, looking to get a weekly paying job doing anything, but you need to be on the dole to qualify for the jobbridge so I'm stuck in a catch 22 situation, not be able to get dole but need dole to get into jobbridge jobs, way to go Joan getting the dole queues down

Dunno about reddit. Burton announced mass subsidies for siteserve (an bord gais, water) ages back. The lad who'll be putting your meter in will be a yellow packer trying his best to displace jobs in the economy.

By even considering getting a job bridge job you are essentially shooting yourself and everyone else in the country who is unemployed in the foot.

Hmmm, doing a job for free that will no doubt bring a hefty amount of abuse with it, sign me up!

Don't necessarily want a job bridge job, just emphasising the point that you need to be on social welfare to qualify, no initiative in place to help those who don't qualify

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 998 ✭✭✭dharma200

So you want to qualify to do a job, essentially that the employer who employes you doesn't pay you, but those who pay tax in the test of country pay you, allowing employers to not bother paying anyone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 998 ✭✭✭dharma200

That has nothing to do with social welfare. It is a crime against everyone in the whole country

How long is this JobBridge nonsense set to last? i.e.; Has a time limit of a few years been placed on it?

Is there a comparable scheme in any other country?

On the fence a bit on this..

    There are pros and cons.

Its seems that an employer is trying to be greedy

But on the other hand, after 9 months an otherwise unemployable person has now become very employable with good prospects.

It will be a somewhat skilled position . Although I would not let a water meter man plumb my home .

One would be better off doing a proper apprenticeship I think.

Is there not proof that most people who do the jobsbridge program get a job after its ran its course?
As long as it works it wont be going anywhere. Yet it is taking complete advantage of the economic situation.

All the graduate jobs in my area have now turned into jobsbridge internships. I was lucky enough after college to land a job in a café after only being a few weeks unemployed. Great, I'm happy to work and put food on the table, but I'm now in a situation where in order to get any work experience or a job in the area I'm qualified in, I would have to get myself fired/laid off, deliberately avoid finding work for three months, and then wait for an internship to come along, because that's where they've all gone.
As it is, I'm taking up space in a job somebody would probably really like, while I can't get work in the area I'm qualified in because the major necessity in the field apart from a degree now is 'wait until you're unemployed for long enough to work for us for free'.
Thanks, jobsbridge. Now I don't even qualify for unsalaried internships that require a third level education.

I work/ specialise in metering. This would be good experience for a unemployed person. Private companies generally pay 750 a day for people to fit meters.

A person doing this should ensure they learn how to correctly fit meters for different size pipes.

Expecting the post in 12 months time from Ted1 saying " I used to work/specialise in metering..."

    Hopefully he wont.

I believe there is a lot more to it than simply connecting a few pipe. I guessing there will also be loads of ground work to be done with driveways and problems frost proofing. And so on....

I can't even get a job in the local Spar because it's a ****in job-bridge.

A company in my town told everyone they're taking 10% paycuts and those who refuse will be let go and "replaced". The abuse of Job Bridge is unbelievable. It's amazing too that European companies will still come to Ireland to hire graduates for their mainland operations yet companies with a base here claim they can't afford it.

The social democrat in me realises that the JobBridge scheme is an inherently positive initiative. I hate to see cynical employers take advantage of it though. A general upturn in the economy should rid us of this.

On paper, JobsBridge is a good thing. With so many college leavers as well as people changing careers... giving them an opportunity to gain experience in a certain field sounds like a great idea. Like there are hardly any jobs being creating but the idea to give people experience is seemingly moving forward.... On paper anyways :)

Problem was... to quote Blackadder in response to the efforts to stop WW1 "it was all bollocks" :pac:
This scheme has been abused and personally, while I am not genius on the matter, it sounds like manipulating the live-register figures for our german bank-managers.

jobbridge is bollocks. My missus' hours in work have been cut to the bare minimum because her bosses just took on three interns and are giving them all the full time work now. Its ****ing criminal.

Didnt the government recently announce that a jobbridge placement will now be extended to 18 months? Its shameless if you ask me. Even the Minimum Wage Act allows for trainees which is what employers and the government should be doing not 50 euro extra a week on jobbridge.
    Trainees
The National Minimum Wage Act also provides sub-minimum rates which apply to employees who are over 18 and undergoing a course of structured training or directed study that is authorised or approved of by the employer.

Since 1 July 2011 the trainee rates provided by the Act are as follows, see also 'Rates' below:

First one-third of training course €6.49 per hour (75% of national minimum wage rate)
Second one-third of training course €6.92 per hour (80% of national minimum wage rate)
Final one third of the training course €7.79 per hour (90% of national minimum wage rate)
Note: each one third period must be at least one month and no more than one year.

The Act provides certain criteria which the training course must meet if the trainee rates are to apply. For example, the training or study must be for the purposes of improving the work performance of the employee; the employee's participation on the training or study must be directed or approved by the employer; at least 10% of the training must occur away from the employee’s ordinary operational duties; there must be an assessment and certification procedure or written confirmation on the completion of the training course.

At least with this the person has a real job and they pay gets upped every few months till they are at the full wage.

Surely there's some kind of condition in place that forbids this?

At the very least, I know that when I was doing my internship, if I was directly hurting the hours of paid staff I'd be isolated and hounded out of the place.

how do you know the person is unemployable. The person may have been working for the last twenty years and is highly employable.

cop out again by our lovely govt.
