Just make sure to clean any rust off the metal before you use it or the rust will flake out through it after a short while

Just make sure when you're finished with it that you hold the can upside down and press the nozzle until it sprays clear - else you'll have a blocked or leaking nozzle next time you go to use it :)

spent the last few days making this calving gate.
Its bolted to the wall with gate hangers so it can be taken out when the shed is being cleared.

I know its a bit to late for you but may help any one else doing up a gate, if you put the locking bar on the wall side you can tie a rope to the top of it and guide it out to end of the side gate, then as you sweep the cow in with the gate you can just pul the rope to lock her in place rather than trying to keep her in it while going to her head to lock it :) looks good tho :)

Best part is that it cost very little to make. Maybe 6 hrs between two days to make it, all scrap steel and a bit a few anglegrinder discs and welding rods and a bit of paint.

Thats the best way alright! We made up 2 of them here a few years ago! 1 in the main cow shed, and another in a seperate shed used as calving box if its going to be awkward or a slow calf to suck or something as you can keep her in the small pen with it and get her in easily

Not to be picky but you should have ran the vertical bars to the ground. If a cow goes down in that she could get choked. We have an old crush gate like this and when a vet saw it first, he told us to get rid of it.

ye your probley right. Its not a big job to rectify that any way. Just extend the bars is all. Will do it some rainy day

Sucklers are the way to go, there will be a serious demand for beef in a couple of years.

It'll be miles better than chasing a cow around a shed with a jack any way.

just bolted to the wall. If i bolted to the floor id never get it out when we go to clean out the dung. It seems fairly sturdy no real movement in it.

The stuff people throw away....... got this Ritchie sheep scales in the local scrap metal yard. Would have been baled up the next morning. Was missing the front gate and the clock. €25 for the crate, €5 for a new bearing, which is used as a roller allowing the crate move up and down, €25 for a scales from ebay.co.uk, and the rest from stuff lying about. Total €55 plus welding rods, disk etc.
And a pair of wheels off an old pressure washer.

I like how Iver done that. Any lad looking to rob his scales knows he'll have to weigh the lead put in the seat of his pants too, clever, subtle ;)
