Started getting the luas this week fir tgs first time. Red line.
Was a bit shocked at the fare evasion I've seen.

First one was a well to do young gentleman who didnt have a ticket. The inspector was in the middle of asking him for his details and he said this is my stop and walked out. The inspector followed him out but he just kept walking away!

The second case was a scumbag who told the inspector to fu#k off and didnt even bother getting off the luas for anothef two stops until be finished his racist rant.

Is there really nothing that the inspectors can do if a person simply decides to walk away at the next stop?

I use the green line Huey Lewis. All fare evaders are scum, regardless of appearance.

I'd imagine they could call the police as it's basically theft, isn't it? Same as if you get your hair cut in the hairdresser's and then walk off without paying? But they can't tackle someone to the ground or anything.

Did see two gardai and four inspectors with 5 or 6 people lined up at the Windy Arbour stop on the green line recently.

Why the hell don't they have barriers/gates to go through like the Underground in London? There's NO incentive to pay! Ridiculous situation.

I dont need to try it. If you read the op you will see what happens. Nothing!

    Because it's not underground? ;)

Did you get the Luas during the night or day? During the night they regularly have rather large security guards, that get on and off at random stops, who would be there to back up the inspectors.

Whilst prosecution levels are relatively low, they do happen.

I presume they can not physically detain you for non payment?

I've seen lads just ignore them before, then walk off at the next stop....always on the red line though - never the posh green.

They dont have the power to detain someone who decides to walk away.

True. Surely they could have done something similar, with barriers or gates. The cost of erecting them would be made back in people actually paying their fares!

So they won't say how many of the fines are paid because its obviously ridiculously low.

Why is the fine only €45. Thats going to encourage evasion even more.

Apart from the fare evasion its a very nice system, and the trams are state of the art.
Will be very interesting to see the Red line connected to the Green line!

I'm pretty sure Luas is Hilariously profitable compared to other public transport in Dublin, I think the honour system works reasonably well. I regularly go the whole green line, brides Glen to Stephens green. I almost always get checked. So

a hefty dose of sarin pumped into the red line luas trams at off peak hours would reduce the states SW bill significantly

I'd love to see how they put a barrier on this

They just love to skip the skangers and target the quiet office workers who won't talk back.

Got checked one morning, fair 'nuff but I wasn't next in line, he went straight past the lads giving him comments about Africa and checked the rest of us

    The Daniel Day.
Been on it several times, always bought a ticket. Never even seen a ticket inspector.

They usually skip over the skangers

I don't get why the Luas needs to stop for a few seconds right before the stephens green stop. Even if there's no other tram around, it will stop, wait and then go the rest of the 50 meters. It's so slow from Charlemont to SG

I tagged on with a leap card last time I used the LUAS (I don't use it often). I got a huge slagging off the skangers on the tram because I paid.

No barriers on the underground in Berlin.
The antics in Dublin just reflect the criminality widespread in Irish society

I travel daily on the luas, there are very often inspectors on it. Annoyingly often. Much more than Dublin bus. The price of it surely means there's lots of money being made. The fine system though seems stupid. Can give any name and address no one would ever know. What kind of stupid would you have to be to give your real name / address.

Dublin bus tend to target buses heading to colleges/schools with their inspectors...have never seen one on the red line equivalent, the 27. Are on the 66/67 once a week though...and even then they Will ignore the ones who might give the hassle.

its waiting for the point to change so it can go into the correct platform. The DART is far more notorious for pointless random stopping

Jeez, there's always inspectors on the Luas. On the Red Line it's between Heuston Station & Bus Aras. And on the Green line they usually get on around Milltown.

I like their little trick of 'pretending' to get on the Luas and watch for people hurridly getting off the Luas when they see the inspectors. Inspectors then hop off the Luas just as the doors close and catch the 'escapees' on the platform. :pac:

It'll be interesting alright when the Red and Green line hook up.

The signals on the Luas are driver operated, they're not automatic like the Dart which us why it has to stop.

And you're right, at least when Luas drivers have to change, they do it at Sandyford stop, not a spot 100m past Sandyford leaving passengers wondering if something has broken.

Does anyone know why it was built in the first place? When you think of Tallaght, you don't think of an amazing place to live. At least with the Dublin metro, although it was the GDP of an African nation it would have connected the airport with the city centre.
