Smashing sheep there razor, was looking at the ewes today and was thinking i should've of brought the camera with me, they were lining themselves up nicely. Definintely will get a few pics. I like your Cha ram, fine sheep

I put this on another thread earlier but seen as it's up it suits this better. My new Charolais ram lamb getting ready for his big day. Didn't take him long to figure out what to do.

Fine sheep cran. Bought our first charollais this year, there fairly lively arent they? or our fella is anyways.

What breeding is behind the lleyn ram lamb if ya dont mind me asking? pm if ya want.

Thanks Eire, ye have mainly used Charollais for years since early 90s hard to beat them for factory lambs. Have a small pedigree flock here now started up over past couple of years. The Lleyn is from Michael Keegan's flock he's jumped out of it since coming here.

Rancher none of the rams pictured are for sale, the Charollais lamb was champion at premier this year. I've sold hoggets up to now last one went to customer last week, but have this years lambs April born to run into Hoggets. I actually let out one with some ewes yesterday he's got super figures and a huge lamb but mouth isn't perfect so going to keep him. Also running one April born with some pedigree ewe lambs, he's top for production figures across Charollais 2013 lambs.

Sea12 I manage my own flock plus fathers & uncles, all in 18 rams out yesterday. Most together was 6 into field of 300 ewes.

That must be a fairly big field!;)

The 6 spent the summer together, plan all along was to let them out together. Think only 2 rams went out in one field that hadn't been together, be a little wary if not use to each other .

I bought a few sheep from a lad up in North Co. Dublin last week. He was telling me that his father runs a flock of 1000 ewes. Passing the house on the ay home, there was a paddock with about 30 rams in it . Wouldn't like to see a fight in there.............

Moving the girls at the weekend

Got this lad as a replacement, lleyn lamb ram. Will put him out this week.
Its not a great pic, will try to get a better one...

Was an Ad. on donedeal, arranged to meet at a local village pub in north Co. Dublin. Now the lad had specified cash only acceptable.
So waiting at the pub and this motorcyclist pulls up, full face helmet, and tells me to follow him. So we are heading down this boreen and I suddenly got a bit nervous, too much Love/Hate, I suppose.
Have you ever tried to hide a couple of grand cash in a jeep while trying to get a wheel brace from under the seat while following a lad on a motor-bike down a back road?:D

Anyway, was 100%:)

when withdrawing the cash get the bank to mark it as "3O lambs" or whatever to show up on the statement. together with the page from the other lads sales book should cover you.

I dont think rams worry too much about the mantle piece.
My fella seems to favor the one eared hog-mouth. I was never fussy but had better standards than that!

Footbath...don't like footbathing mid mating but it was a case
of having to be done

Footbath holds 40 ewes and needs 2 bags zinc sulphate to get 10% solution
We use a hydrometer to test the solution and a lot of people have asked about it since our Grassland Association farm walk last year.
Fill a 1litre mineral bottle from the footbath with a jug and drop the hydrometer into it and read it at the level of the water
The hydrometer costs about €5+p+p Here's a pic and the zinc sulphate measurement is on the right of the hydrometer and the website to buy it is at the top

Muck kills formalin whereas zinc sulphate works even if the water is dirty so we can leave it for weeks if it doesn't rain too much

Were the ewes clipped fairly late?....don't seem to have much wool on them....great strong wide sheep.

Always shear crossbreds end of august, it's easier to organise the shearing when they haven't lambs with them, Have to put Clik on them in june, so it costs that bit more.
We shear the pedigrees in May, but they're weaned by then too

Sea, the ewes are texel/lleyn cross, I find it a good combination

Vendeens are very easy lambed and quick to get up and that's worth a lot with the numbers here.
Also don't like the ''black at both ends'' scenario with suffolks.

Yea know what u mean. Got rid of 2 suffolks this year and replaced them with Charolais. Have one dug golf left but this is his last year.

Anyone here shear ewe lambs before mating?

Ram into his last fortnight with ewe lambs here and not so happy with the numbers tipped thus far.
They were sheared mid-october, a bit later than planned. Most are off a Belclare ram and they can have big awkward fleeces at lambing if not sheared. Could it be that the cold wet conditions since Oct have slowed down oestrus onset with some of them?
Appear to be thriving well and all wormed and mineral dosed.

dont shear here every year but sheared 50 ewe lambs end of september, first week only 5 tipped, 19 after 3 weeks and only 7 left saturday which was 3 weeks, always find its the second to third week that they take off

Sound for that Razor - yeah I expected the slow start alright, this week bein week three should see a bit more action then hopefully!

Do you use ram effect to get them cycling or is it just straight in with rams?

got a ram done this year but didnt go according to plan, got infection, should be ok for next year though. so was straight in with ram

Fine big sheep anyway, should have no problem going in lamb.
We always put a ram other side of the fence for a fortnight before putting together'
Always shear them too, huge advantage at lambing.

I only leave them in a paddock beside the ewes for for48 hours for the ram effect.

He is in now coming up to 2 weeks, and he has only tipped a few it seems. So maybe the Hampshire did a lot better job that I thought in the first 2 weeks... We'll see come scanning time I guess...

There are a few that don't look to have any raddle on em, which worries me a small bit... But it could be the yellow raddle I was using first, which was very faint on some of em...

Lawn is a job I hate with a passion, are the Hampshire’s ewes or rams ?

if you had a ram lamb of your own about I wouldn’t hesitate to let him in, a lamb is better than none come the spring even if quality not great
