Whats actually funny about this thread is the people coming on here to bash Tesco are actually only giving the company free advertising.

The thread is now 14 pages long , Tesco themselves could not have marketed this promotion better themselves

I think its more to do with the people who abuse (some would say savvy shoppers) things like this and go and buy 100 x something and ruin it for rest. You see them on here, someone finds a deal and someone buys hundreds - gym bag on littlewoods was a recent one here.

Seem to recall sainsburys or someone in uk a few years ago being stung by a carrot (?) deal they did in conjunction with holiday vouchers. Cost them a fortune
Retailers have to do things like this to protect the exposure should it become viral

    Firstly... What carrot wtf?

Secondly, yep poor old tesco and the other retail giants. God love them and their huge yearly profit returns.

So what if they get shafted by the odd coupon or deal that tips in the customers favour?

And then the intelligent people read the thread and come to the conclusion that tesco are ripping them off.

Tesco are a fact of life, there is as much negatives as positives about Tesco on this thread and others.

Nil actually- they simply ran with what Asda do in the UK- only they're benchmarking against Lidl/Aldi and only on own-brand goods (in the UK branded goods are included). When I last was in Asda- I got a tenner back on a spend of just under £50. Similarly annoyingly- its off your next shop. Tesco simply copied and pasted the Asda scheme here- and then put shackles and limitations on it that don't apply in the UK.

I would say the cost of implementing it with marketing and IT stuff probably ran into the millions.

Don't forget, legally every product they compare they have to purchase it from a competitor so they can show the comparison and the price on the receipt.

There is no such thing as bad publicity, I bet thanks to this thread more people know about this promotion then what Tesco would have hoped for.

And for the poster saying the intelligent people will realise that Tesco are ripping them off, what is more likely to happen is people will see a " bargain alert " and go yay I can get my branded products at the same price as the German stuff

Are you mad? Marty whealen wont stop banging on about the promotion during every ad break on radio and tv! :-)

On your second point... Bargain alerters/boardies on here aren't thick... They may read the title and think that way initially perhaps, but then go on to read opinions of other boardies on that bargain within the thread itself.

Never said they were thick and it is hard to judge the promotion until it ends and we say what profit/loss Tesco make from it....

But I for one am willing to bet they will be in profit

I agree with you there... Unfortunately they will gain from this promotion.

This Tesco "promotion" has - if anything - strengthened my resolve never to go back there.
I used to shop there years ago but haven't been in quite a while.

My dad said that since the Aldi opened up in his town that the Tesco is like a ghost town.
Good enough for them ripping people off for so long.

why unfortunately? If you hate Tesco don't shop there, but I think this promotion is only going to force Aldi and Lidl to go even cheaper.

You can hate Tesco, but if it wasn't for Tesco in Ireland, there would be no competition and Aldi/Lidl would charge more than they do now.

Plus tesco provide thousands of jobs in Ireland and competition can only be a good thing

Tesco have also been the reason for thousands of jobs losses, local butchers, groceries etc.

they also stopped using Iri sh distributors and buy everthign possibel in from the UK.
hence Wall as oppose to HB etc.

But that Aldi/Lidl sell german products thats ok ..
Also if prices goes up in Tesco when they start using irish distributors would you be happy?

I guess some people are never happy ...

I think you'll find that Aldi/life buy a huge portion if there goods in Ireland.

I was simple pointing out to the poster that his point isn't really valid

The reason Tesco stopped buying Irish goods is because the Irish shoppers stopped buying them as they were too expensive.

If Irish people are so worried about Irish Jobs the solution is simple buy Irish where possible

I heard a woman last night giving the customer service desk hell, she did a €60 shop and demanded her voucher for €10.

She only got a voucher for €3. She thought she would easily get €10 if these guys saved €60!
    https://www.aldi.ie/en/entertainment/swap-save-challenge/

I've seen loads of vouchers left behind too, a few savvy shoppers checking them and picking them up.

It is open to abuse once you buy 10 of a product thats cheaper then you get a voucher for the difference, I'm sure it wont be long till these products are known.

Loathe Tesco myself but virtually all food retailers were involved so none of them are blameless, aldi and the like included in that.

Lauding them as a saviour hardly...I stated some facts

Tesco employ thousands of staff in Ireland
competetion can only be a good thing
The stopped buying Irish as there Irish customers stopped buying Irish
The horse meat scandal was a European wide issue which affect many stores

Rubbish, they replaced HB with Walls. same product but with different licence
they stopped buying products off the Irish distributors and bought the same products of the UK instead. They did it to cream off extra profit and to give the 2 finger to the most profitable market.

Look at the drink they buy its all the UK versions, lower %, obscure size bottles and cans. etc.

Time for you to divulge who you work for.

Tesco shut down hundreds of local stores and setup stores outside town/city centres
Competition has lead to a race to the bottom
They stopped buying Irish because they could source it somewhere cheaper - aim to make profits but provide lesser quality produce

Nonsense- Walls and HB are the exact same product, off the exact same assembly line, they're just different brand names owned by Unilever. As a volume purchaser- Unilever simply deliver them the single branded product- which is then distributed to their stores, by Tesco themselves.

As for alcohol- its not all the UK versions- they do as many European and artisan beers and spirits, as many specialist shops. And if they do stock UK versions- so what- you're still paying Irish VAT and excise to the Irish Revenue Commissioners- not to the UK authorities. If you imagine we have bottling lines in Ireland for most of the alcohol sold here- that differ from the bottling lines, for the UK sold product- nope, not a chance.

Its very easy to vilify Tesco (they are their own worst enemy in many respects), but in many cases, you'd be wrong to do so. And no- I most certainly don't work for them, never have, and never will do.
