Anyone able to do a quick calculation of fuel cost? - Details Included.

Car - 131 Ford Fiesta - 1.2 Litre Petrol.

Petrol at local pump - around 1.44 per litre.

It's my sisters car and every time I borrow it she's like make sure you put €5 at least into it. This is really adding up a couple of times a week.

All I use it for (1 trip ) e.g is into town and back (door to door roundtrip about 2.5 kms).

Is she ripping me off?

Sometimes I could give her 4 x €5's for 4x2.5km trips. (so that's like €20 for 10kms and I pay for the parking and I pay for the additional driver premium on her insurance).

To be really specific:

with no traffic, a trip to town and back would take 7 mins maybe at 3rd/4th gear at about 30-40km per hour.

Well look at it this way. You're paying 20 quid for a 10km journey. So that's about 2 quid a km. seems a bit excessive to ask you to stick a fiver into it every time.

But on the flip side it's a bit petty to ask you to put 3.50 or a small amount into it every time.

Why not do the runs then give her maybe 10-15 at the end of the week?

There are most costs involved in running a car than just petrol......

The parking cost and additional insurance premium are entirely down to you.

If I was loaning my car to someone and they started complaining about having to put petrol in it I might be inclined to tell them they couldn't borrow it anymore and to walk. Cars are expensive things to run.

I'd say she's doing you a favour rather than ripping you off.

If you consider that the fiver is ONLY to pay for juice,then you are probably overpaying by €4.70.
However,at the end if the month,when your sister has a car payment of a couple of hundred euro to find,or a full service to pay for ,or a new set of tyres etc,then your deal doesn't seem so bad!
The maths:
This car probably does 15 km per litre on the run described,@ 1.44 per litre comes to approx 10c per km,so 25c for your journey.

That's what I thought.

And further to the above, I didn't mention that my boyfriend spent nearly a year giving her lifts to and from college and leaving her down town on nights on and all he got was a thank you and when she went to buy the car she was €2000 short on the loan and I gave her €1500.

I think she is being quite unreasonably. She wanted the car so she can pay for it.

I gave her money towards the car and never looked for a euro back and now I feel like I'm filling it with petrol for her as well.

Ok, I'm really not being smart but why on earth would you need a car 3 Kms round trip ?

This is inconceivable to me, you could easily cycle this or walk.

This is what cause unnecessary gridlock on our roads. And pollution. Not to mention a waste of natural resources.

Given the additional information it would appear your real problem is more of a family issue and probably not best answered on the Motors forum. You should really have asked "What is the cost of petrol to drive a 1.2l Fiesta 2.5kms?".

Could be bringing 10 bags of coal to a grannies house, but that would add weight and hence increase the fuel cost

I walk everywhere! most of the time unless its lashing rain which it was 3 times this week.

It takes 15-20 minutes to walk into town from my house, thats 40 minutes round trip and whatever I have to do in between. I walk up and down at least 10 times a week.

Yeah your sister is overcharging but at the same time she is giving you the use of her car. It used to piss me off when I had my younger brother on my insurance and he'd go take the car and not throw anything towards petrol.
Best thing to do is come to an agreement with your sister on how much you should be giving her for petrol.
If your not happy then it isn't that far of a distance to walk or you can get a taxi or buy your own car.

Well if just the cost to drive the 3 km round trip is all you wanted to know then why bring the money you paid for the car in ?

I'm not attacking you but seriously if it's causing you agro then a bicycle is a very efficient mode of transport and cheap, and reasonably fast for such a short trip.

Sounds like your sister was not brought up to be thoughtful of others, and maybe she's a bit selfish or maybe was allowed to get away with murder. Maybe she has Daddy wrapped around her little finger ?

Can your parents not see that you loaned her money and it's not reasonable to expect 5 Euro's every time you use it ? if she asks for receipts then I'd tell her politely where to stick the car.

Anyway the "maths"

The 1.2 fiesta in town, (is this Dublin ?) will probably get 30 ish mpg on such a short trip maybe slightly less but lets say 30 mpg or 9.41L/100km or 10.62 kms per litre, and so 5 Euro's @1.44 P/L which is cheap ? you get 3.5 litres of petrol.

5 Euro's worth gets you about 3.5 litres so 3.5 litres x 10.62 = 37 kms

Put it another way the 1500 you paid and didn't get back would get you 11,000 kms @ 30 mpg on those short trips. More if you drive further in non stop start slow traffic.

I the car has a trip computer that calculated fuel consumption then reset it before you set off and note the figure when you return that will give you an idea what the consumption is per that short trip and post it here next time.

A full tank reading and calculation at the pump is the best way to calculate fuel consumption, but in this case it should tell us what you get on that trip.

After all she has the decency to give you the loan of her car, it keeps you dry warm and way more cheaper than a taxi, 2.50 each way that's nothing. ..

Ye sure, but you're missing the point. The OP loaned her sister 1500 Euro's to buy the car and afaik didn't get it back.

That's 11,000 kms worth of driving @her 3 km round trips.

Thanks for the answers above. My parents think she's very selfish, they wouldn't even help her with car, everything is about money with her. Her first car and she wanted a new one etc etc. I am not a mean person, like the poster above said 'if my sister was good enough to loan me her car of course I'd throw her a fiver', yes everyone would but when you a making 3 - 4 short runs a week I think it's very mean.

Even sometimes when shes headed the same direction as me and I'll say oh I'll get down with you she hesitates like. She's very much take take take with little return and I just feel shes taking the p*** but that's not everyone's opinion and that's fine too.

Tbh, I'd get a taxi/hackney for my journey and look for my €1500 back!

I would never give my sisters anthing for petrol for a small spin into town, and if they offered it to me, I'd laugh at them. (even if it was a couple of times per week)

Well in that kind of slow short driving i wouldn't expect more than 30 odd mpg. Nothing is very economical for that, apart from electric.

You could try a small claims court, even the summons would scare her but I would not be out of pocket like that 1500 Euro is a lot of money these days.

That's a hard lesson to learn but it's a lesson and any lesson you learn from is always good.

I would imagine a court will need proof though so if you can prove you took out the money at least around the time she bought the car you might have a chance, if you got a witness to back you up then even better.

I wouldn't fall out over it though, families and all, you need them sometimes !
