How is the truth a bit of both? The truth is more, we speak the same language, we are close regionally and we know their products and brands and have parallel cultures.

We are a trading partner as such and a extremely large and valuable one at that.

nothing to do with sadness or guilt over some past discretion's, thats just ridiculous.

Yeah, not guilt but a sign of a relationship that is more than just trade.

Half of England has an Irish granny don't forget!

He's talking nonsense anyway. Britain owes Ireland, Northern or Republic, not one single thing. Nothing. No "reparations", no apologies, nothing. The past is gone.

What sort of idiotic statement is that? The past is gone? Well duh. Does that mean you forget it. If I go outside now and shoot the first person I meet should I be let off with it by the time it gets to trial because "the past is gone." Dont you know that those who dont learn from the past are condemned to repeat it?

What, you actually believe that English tax payers want to continue subsidising the Celtic cling ons?

Where did I say that? In fact I believe I invited them to wash their hands of the whole union if that's how they feel.

The Germans will be delighted to hear that. They had to appologise and are still feed a healthy dose of guilt. The British still havent let that one go.

The English tax payer is already subsidising your social welfare, free prescriptions and glorified talking Shop of a parliament. Isn't it about time you gave something back?

Is it subsidising it? How? Are you mistaking a loan for a subsidy.

    different countries

Lol. You do realise that the tans were here when they weren't different countries, right?

You have very little clue about how corporation tax works and yet you post in it.

FF - the point about the Germans is they learn about their history, warts and all, "different countries" and all. If you invade a country you share that history. The Germans don't get to forget the invasion of France and Russia because they are different counties. In the Black and Tans case that wasn't even true. In fact the tans were in Ireland to preserve the union. It was the same country. Learning about the tans is learning about the UK.

Yes we have. Another irishman living in the past, i see. The whole world moves on, but Ireland never does. Like a bitter stepchild who always blames others for his own failings. Victim mentality at it's worst.

Three world wars and one World Cup. Or was it two world wars and seven world cups? I forget.

We'll forget the tans when you whiny poms forget the Blitz.

We have forgotten, with the exception of a tiny minority of fools who sing a stupid song at football matches.

Ireland will never forget, as it would then have to face up to the reality that it is a state of low importance, with a tiny workforce by global standards, and a population that destroyed it's own economy through personal greed and short-sightedness, caused by it's continuing inability to take responsibility for its own actions, collectively and individually.

You blame your banks. You borrowed the money that you could not afford, nobody forced you.

You blame the politicians that you repeatedly elect as a result of the gombeenism and political ignorance of the electorate.

You blame the EU for making you pay for your mistakes.

It's never your fault, is it?

Jesus you are a vicious little supremacist. You don't forget the blitz or your wars. That's the whole poppy fascism. Secondly this thread isn't about how Europe is seen in Ireland or who we blame, by and large most of us blame us. It was originally about British politicians thinking that American companies based in Ireland owe tax on sales in the uk. They don't. Because he referenced the tans that became part of the discussion.

As to why you hate the Irish mentioning the tans, there are far right groups in Germany who would forget the holocaust. As a British far rightist you hope that all the unter mensch victims of British history would forget it. If I were to take that racist screed and replace British with White ( or Anglo) and Irish with black the sheer hatred would be obvious.

Not sure why you are in an Irish forum.

What's that got to do with the republic and it's tax system?

You have a point, but the war of independence was a major part of Irish history, but much less so English.

I can't speak about the modern curriculum, but when I did my history 'O' level, that period was kind of busy elsewhere, namely about the treaty of Versailles, the formation of the LoN, the White army etc.

To everyone outside of Ireland, it was a bit of a sideshow.

I'm actually very left wing, used to be a member of the socialist workers party, and actively campaign for various equality based causes, donating both time and money.

I have no axe to grind with Germany, I lived there for three years in my twenties and my son's godfather is German.

I wear the poppy to commemorate the 4 members of my family that fought in the two world wars.

I've lived in Ireland on and off for over a decade, married an irishwoman and two of my three kids were born in Ireland.

I believe the Irish need to stop blaming Britain for all that is wrong with the country. Until this happens generation upon generation of weak-minded adults will raise their children to take no responsibility for their actions, as they can simply cry "800 years rabble rabble" as a justification for why they fail so miserably.

Of course there are many Irish who have made this huge leap, and I am happy to call some of them my friends. They recognise that Ireland is an independant state and it's people have to stand on their own two feet. Britain had wars and colonised many countries, but none bleat about it as much as the Irish. The irony of course being that millions of Irish moved to the UK to start a new and better life over the years.

Unfortunately there are some others out there who still listen to Wolfe Tones CDs while wearing a Celtic/Man Utd shirt and talking about "what a great little country we are" while occasionally spouting overused nonsense about Butchers Aprons, 800 years and the Black and Tans to somehow prove their "irishness".

It's ok to look at the past, but not to use it as a justification or excuse for everything else.

I am waiting on you're credentials to back up your amazingly outrageous first post on this matter that went something along the lines of, "Great Britain give us favourable treatment because they feel some self existing pangs of guilt about their historical treatment of ireland".

And nothing to do with us having a huge financial bearing on their economic health due to the trade links.

You should probably re-read your first post again to yourself.

This is terrific news. So we only have to wait a hundred years for some sort of economic boost from England to the north in recompense for what the modern day version of their Tans did here? Sweet. I'm going to buy a car and one of those six-foot long subway sandwiches.

    Nope, no Hand out there.
