I shop in Lidl and occasionally Tesco. I have eyes - I can see that the veg in Tesco is ratty and old compared to Lidl. And this is comparing a "flagship" Extra store in a Tesco-owned centre to a bog standard Lidl. If I end up in the one in Celbridge I suddenly feel like I'm shopping in East Berlin.
Again, simply because I worked there at one stage of my life does not mean anything. Im not going to get into a tit for tat with over this as I see most Tesco threads has yourself and a few other regulars giving out about them . Constantly. And why not. Sure it makes for good debate..

I personally don't see this quality issue you have seen or have been able to prove. I see crates of veg , and if you lift the create there is a fresh one under it straight of the boat. I think there seems to be a boards.ie trend that people simply like to follow.
Maybe the shear volume of traffic and the public picking through these has given you perception of untidiness. Im sure there are bad or small examples of fruit and veg in any super markets trays. Do you really think Lidl Tesco or aldi check every bit of it? They don't. They have to trust the suppliers. Many of which are probably the same people.

what I see is one large company not takign ****e from another and pulling them up on false representation. i dont see two companies trying to trip each other up.

Fruit and Veg is sold in differtn classes and as the shelf life gets shorter the price gets lower, Tesco just buyer the shorter life stuff as its cheaper.

Also i beleive that tesco actually freeze there fruit and veg. these cause the short shelf life

went there today and spent €145 , got back €0.37 voucher, so worth it(not) they would be better off dropping the prices

Tesco were caught using inaccurate comparisons. It's your money, but you should compare the actual products ingredients and then come back, rather than generalising. One of the comparisons Tesco got pulled up on was Maple Syrup - Aldi's was 100% Maple Syrup, Tesco only 40%.

We still buy some brands as we find them better, but I can't think of any own brand which I'd pick above the Aldi equivalent, and especially not any of the Value range in Tesco (for example).

Maybe there is a very slim chance of Dunnes , But the Germans have no chance.
Tesco 27.6 per cent market share
(when SuperValu and Superquinn are combined) at 24.9 per cent
Dunnes Stores at 21.5 per cent.
Its only a few on here that seem to rave about them .. I still cant find this quality that every one speaks of and customer service in Aldi is down right terrible.
My wife got a bottle of wine a about 6 weeks ago .. Went to the till and paid. At home we seen it was double the price.
She brought it back . But they could not provide a refund , even after showing them the receipt and the SEL. She had to go through the torture mill of Aldi customer service. After a phone call and a promise to pay back the difference, the voucher never arrived. After another call they had no record of it. She gave up . All this tripe about aldi customer service and better quality would be a lot easer to take if it was true.
If you want branded goods go to Dunnes or Tesco. If you want value buy the cheap everyday budget junk you can get it there also.

If you want E numbers and the exact same quality as Tesco everyday crap, everywhere go to Aldi. Thats all they sell . Simple as that really.

Really starting to enjoy your posts on this, backing Tesco to the hilt.
They're faultless in your eyes, it's kind of baffling tbh.

Tesco do have better customer service than Aldi, but personally (do big shop in Aldi weekly) I've never actually had to enquire about customer service there (Aldi).

Tesco on the other hand...would go and pick up a few bits and pieces there every week and I can't count the number of times I've had to go to customer service there because of wrong pricing.

So you're customer service theory is a bit shaky really. You'd have to think that Tesco has better customer service because they need to, considering they have a large number or unhappy customers...

I can only say that Aldi customer care is excellent and handled locally where possible. I was charged 22cent a while ago for a food bag which I had put some bananas into and brought it to their attention on facebook, not to get my 22cent back but in case everyone was being wrongly charged, got a call from the assistant manageress and got a bottle of wine and some flowers for bringing it to their attention.

Hit the nail right on the head. If they didnt slap yellow stickers strategically on all the junk food and forget to remove them they wouldnt have to deal with people complaining about being charged too much.

Aldi on the other hand are always cheap and in 3 or so years of doing the full shop there not once did i get overcharged. Tesco maybe 4 times a year even though id probably only buy 4 or 5 things a week there.

Always check your receipts in Tesco.

Heres is a perfect example of incorrect pricing in tesco...

Just in there today as had to get milk and it was the closest place to me in town at the time...

Cadbury toffee fingers... The ones with the witch on the box... In a big display for €1.50. Scanned at €2 at till. Informed the till op and she went off leaving me and five other people waiting till she came back and asked me if i still wanted them as she saw they were at 1.50 and would enter them on till at 1.50.

I wasnt pushed, so i left them with her so just got my milk and left.

I later found the same Cadbury toffee fingers in the euro shop while getting another item for 1 euro!

I availed of the 20 euro off the 60 euro shop tesco BA a while ago... And when my 60 euro approx of shopping was delivered i was still looking at it thinking to myself that it was feck all for 40 euro!

Yes, Proco Jr. This really is Tesco.

    Stuart - Customer Care

You could be working for aldi for all we know :)

Considering tesco mobile have a "talk to" forum I would have thought you would be familiar with boards procedures for these type of accounts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,169 ✭✭✭CH3OH

    Batten down the hatches! Stuart!;)

Firstly, I believe you need to become a Verified Rep to post as a Tesco spokesperson. I'm sure Boards will contact you.

I like shopping in tesco but there are such a limited number of products that you are price matching and the fact that you give the nett difference on a total shop means that in my eyes this is all cloak and daggers. Big signs, big advertising and no real substance.
On a recent 112 euro shop you managed to price match on a total of €7.50 of the total.

Tesco needs to get back to basics and stop trying to fool customers with the constant price rises and subsequent half price reductions. Just offer real value all the time.

I guess this is a bargain for those that just shop in Tesco. Tesco give you a voucher to bring you back to their store, Aldi/Lidl give you change to spend anywhere you please.

200 posts and only 1 person who sticks up for Tesco. Says a lot really.

Tesco needs to rethink their strategy i think.

Long may it stay that way. :)

Even though I admit to often buying in Tesco's as it's my closest big supermarket. :(

I don't think much of tesco overall esp their fruit and veg
and certain meats but I use them once a fortnight to
    get a few bits

On the other hand they do have some great deals on beers which
none of the other irish supermarkets have
the best example of this is the world beer offer and this has
been going on for maybe a year, the 3 for 7euro offer
    3 tigers for 7
    dunnes 3.15 each
super valu 2.99 last i looked a few weeks back

its very rare dunnes or svalu have offers on these so
fair play to them for that alone

Best offers in tesco there on chocolate by a mile also with
so many half price offers in store
best one at the moment for me was 2 frys turkish delights for 1euro
yet showing up at 1.18 each

wouldnt be going for a grocery shop though
got 3 8euro vouchers off a 50 spend for three weeks but
I won't use any of them when i can get 10 off in dunnes for
    EVERY 50 i spend

It has to have the highest concentration possible of Dunnes Stores though!

Says it all that people couldn't be bothered picking up their vouchers.

I received a voucher today for the grand total of €0.49 cents.
    Would I use it?
Probably not as I'd say it will get lost before I get back to a Tesco.
Tesco need to buck up their ideas to get their market share back up or stop the drop.

Imagine how much Tesco spend in administration costs to think up all this ****?

Simple solution. Stop spending money on consumer psychologists and spend it on improving food quality and prices. Thats what the germans do and thats why i and many other ex tesco customers have switched.

Nil actually- they simply ran with what Asda do in the UK- only they're benchmarking against Lidl/Aldi and only on own-brand goods (in the UK branded goods are included). When I last was in Asda- I got a tenner back on a spend of just under £50. Similarly annoyingly- its off your next shop. Tesco simply copied and pasted the Asda scheme here- and then put shackles and limitations on it that don't apply in the UK.

I think its more to do with the people who abuse (some would say savvy shoppers) things like this and go and buy 100 x something and ruin it for rest. You see them on here, someone finds a deal and someone buys hundreds - gym bag on littlewoods was a recent one here.

Seem to recall sainsburys or someone in uk a few years ago being stung by a carrot (?) deal they did in conjunction with holiday vouchers. Cost them a fortune
Retailers have to do things like this to protect the exposure should it become viral

it's branded products here too ..
Tesco Price Promise includes own label, lesser known branded products and identical branded grocery products where we can find a comparable grocery product in both Tesco and Aldi or Lidl.
