If Aldi sold baby formula, pampers, and as the wife is a vegetarian, tofu and a bit of other vegetarian stuff (quorn mince etc) I'd pretty much not have a reason to ever darken Tesco doors again.

Tesco has become a kind of niche shop for me now. Wouldn't dream of doing a weekly in it anymore. Too many smoke and mirrors with them.

    As for aldi meat.

    Specially selected steaks ftw. :)

Aldis nappies are really good much much better than pampers. They have actually won awards.

I'm going to guess your a first time parent, first time parents suffer from marketing compliance and tend to overspend on buggies, nappies, etc by the time they have the second they realise they over spent and there actually better products out there for far less.

its less about a bargain, more a comfort that you can get the equivalent prices in Tesco with the convenience of all of the other brands and stuff from Tesco...

a few cent saving as opposed to a huge saving shows that maybe the price gap between the discount shops and the likes of tesco is as big as is made out.

Ahem, this forum is Bargain Alerts.

2nd time parent and I have given up on LIDL / Aldi and Tesco nappies, they all leaked.

Pampers Simply dry all the way.

Would love to use Baby dry all the time but couldn't afford it, dont see the point in the really expensive actifit.

    No second time.

Tried and tested there's too. Didn't suit. Too leaky.

in fairness they did before, but thats the point of price promise. Tesco know they are more expensive than lidl or aldi and are trying to change that (for customers that buy 10 more items).

I guess if you go to tesco to buy strawberry yogurt and breakfast roll (2 items) - no shop would really care about customers like that.

tesco ramped up the price from 69 cents to 89 cents when the farmers got their 10 cents a litre increase on milk .
does it take 2 litres of milk to make one pi$$y small pot of yogurt ?
tesco also stopped filling up the yogurt pots to the top , you are lucky if you get a pot of yogurt that is two thirds full .

    tesco equals pure greed

Yoghurt Gate scandal has been exposed.

An pubic inquiry is needed for sure.

I wouldnt trust a single word from Tesco. I still buy stuff there because often they have what I cannot get in Aldi or Lidl, but Im ultra ultra cautious and have to check weights and volume all the time because they have such a history of misleading promotions.

I see it as my mission to ensure they never get an extra cent of me. Its such a shame, because years ago I really used to love Tesco and thought they were great on price.

I agree. The prices in Tesco are never what they say they are. Quality is never great and food always has a very close sell-by date. I don't like Tesco at all. They aren't cheaper either.

I much more prefer Supervalu and Aldi. Aldi is a nice and quiet store that's a hell of a lot cheaper. A lot of the stuff there is Irish too.

You can't blame people for shopping elsewhere

have to disagree with you on nappies. Third time parent here and aldi nappies are not as good as pampers in my opinion. My kids always end up with a rash from them after a few days of use and toddler's bed clothes are wet In morning whenever I use one overnight .Love aldi. Do all my weekly shopping there but end up in Tesco for nappies and quorn every month.

Because I have 2 kids close together I usually have 2 or three sizes on the go in the house and no changing of sizes helped.

I even tried Lidl's new improved nappies when they were launched, better but Simply Dry were the best and trust me I am very mindful of trying ot save money.

Is there any chance that 10 goods can cost you X, and give you a voucher for Y where Y is greater than X. (Thus allowing you to profit by buying them over and over again)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,394 ✭✭✭Sheldons Brain

I went to Tesco today and got a few items. I was ecstatic to receive my €0.01 voucher from the price match, this scheme is really really good, life changing even. Not

More Tesco bull****. they prefer to spend money on marketing than actually making there goods cheaper and better quality like Aldi and Lidl.

So glad they are getting what they deserve. Loss of customers to better shops.

Average purchase volume and value in a convenience store wouldn't be much higher than that.

http://www.rte.ie/news/business/2013/1029/483324-grocery/ - that's why Tesco are spooked; they would have had access to that data (and similar) before it went public. Tesco market share falling, the Germands *and* Dunnes rising.

If they don't manage to reverse the slide they could easily find themselves #2 behind Dunnes and with the two Germans above them in combined share.

    No.

In my experience, the vast majority of Lidl or Aldi own brands are way superior to Tesco's own brands. So no incentive even if I could be bothered ...

Maybe there is a very slim chance of Dunnes , But the Germans have no chance.
Tesco 27.6 per cent market share
(when SuperValu and Superquinn are combined) at 24.9 per cent
Dunnes Stores at 21.5 per cent.
Its only a few on here that seem to rave about them .. I still cant find this quality that every one speaks of and customer service in Aldi is down right terrible.
My wife got a bottle of wine a about 6 weeks ago .. Went to the till and paid. At home we seen it was double the price.
She brought it back . But they could not provide a refund , even after showing them the receipt and the SEL. She had to go through the torture mill of Aldi customer service. After a phone call and a promise to pay back the difference, the voucher never arrived. After another call they had no record of it. She gave up . All this tripe about aldi customer service and better quality would be a lot easer to take if it was true.
If you want branded goods go to Dunnes or Tesco. If you want value buy the cheap everyday budget junk you can get it there also.

If you want E numbers and the exact same quality as Tesco everyday crap, everywhere go to Aldi. Thats all they sell . Simple as that really.

If you think the budget food of Aldi is in anyway better that Dunnes, Tesco of Supervalue Yellow pack everyday stuff. Then you are delusional.
    Same ****. Different bucket.

    But it is better quality.

You're essentially letting one poor experience colour your views of one retailer. Tesco are losing market share, Aldi/Lidl are gaining market share; what does that tell you? It tells me enough of people think that the products on sale there offer a price/quality balance Tesco can't match right now.

Lidl's Vitafit OJ range is IMO by far and away superior to any own-brand OJ I have ever tried.

That's what people do though with regard experience . Look back at the thread. One bad experience turns them.

What the figures tell me, is that we are deep in recession and people are trying to save pennies to get by.
And having the inconvenience of making two shopping trips to get something else on offer down the road.

Tesco are a big global faceless money machine as are Aldi. Both trying to attract different types of shopper.

David Berry, commercial director with Kantar Worlpanel, said Tesco continued to be under pressure here.

"This is the twelfth successive quarter of decline for Tesco, which has lost significant market share to the discounters over the course of the year," he said. "Its 'Tesco Price Promise' campaign is clearly aimed at challenging the view that Aldi and Lidl are cheaper and it will be interesting to see the response from shoppers."

It's not the same. Tesco even got into trouble, and had to make a settlement, for making comparisons with Aldi products, as the Tesco products were quantifiably lower quality!

Each to their own, if you don't see the benefit - it's your money. In our house, something double bubble would get noticed straight away tbh!

You used to work for Tesco as you have admitted in posts on here. You, alongside the person who still does, are the only two on here who are rattling through this "Lidl and Aldi are poor quality" claptrap. There's one very obvious source of this disinformation...

Tesco "Everyday Value" products are of a quality I would have been disgusted with when I was shopping at Kwiksave in the UK; and the items they have price-matched (prior to this stunt) to Lidl and Aldi are utterly incomparable in quality. Tesco's fruit and veg are very poor quality and left on display too long; and their fresh meat is extremely dear and often short-dated. Add to that that my local Tesco was successfully prosecuted by the FSAI over selling dodgy meat.

I've been buying the 5 small cartons for €1.49 for the last few years now. Never used to really drink orange juice but this stuff is very nice.

As someone who has shopped frequently in Tesco, ALDI & Lidl over the years I generally find the german discounters stock better quality fruit & veg, don't try and bamboozle you with any sneaky pricing (or increases) and are always cheaper.

So what if I worked there. 1000s of people work there in Ireland. 10s of thousands indirectly . They export more Irish food than anyone else.

Have you any proof that the current Aldi fruit and veg range is better than both Dunnes Tesco?
Or is this just simply personal opinion.

You know, you are right there. Tesco is slipping badly here. I know that they are cutting staff and hours in response to less profit. If you look at the staff, they have been wearing the same uniform for the last 2 years by the looks of it. Seems like a retarded way to handle a slip in the market. The last director left the company in a bad way. The Fresh and Easy brand in the USA was a joke and a complete waste of money. Instead of investing in current customers. I hope this changes with the new leadership.

You are one of a tiny, tiny number of people making claims as to Tesco's food quality that everyone else on here refutes - and you were employed by them. Its fairly obvious where those claims are coming from.

I don't shop in Dunnes or Aldi.

I shop in Lidl and occasionally Tesco. I have eyes - I can see that the veg in Tesco is ratty and old compared to Lidl. And this is comparing a "flagship" Extra store in a Tesco-owned centre to a bog standard Lidl. If I end up in the one in Celbridge I suddenly feel like I'm shopping in East Berlin.
